  1. I thought they brought the winner onstage and she had requested some overplayed YHF song, so they told her to request "Candyfloss" instead.  What's the real story?  Just listening to the tape, the whole exchange was very awkward.

Here's the story. The winner, Gillian that went up on stage is a friend of mine. We also sat across the table from another winner for the Sat night dinner. He said that they decided not to bring all of the winners up on stage so they drew straws to see who would go up. Gillian won but she wasn't able to attend Friday night, so they brought her up on Saturday instead. I asked her what she was planning to request and since she's a casual fan (as I suppose most ticket winners would be, otherwise they'd have bought a ticket already, right?) anyway, since YHF is her favorite record, the songs that she mentioned were songs that they regularly play anyway. The band told her this as well and suggested she request Candyfloss. It was only awkward because she (again, casual fan. this is normal out in the real world, btw) wasn't familiar with Candyfloss and didn't know it wasn't on YHF until Jeff embarrassed her by pointing it out. She was just going along with what they asked her to do.

  2. This film has finally been released.  I watched it twice in two days (cable TV On Demand).  Has anyone else seen it?

    Thoughts:

I loved it, although I'm not exactly sure why.  *laughs*  It is very much a documentary without a lot of source material for its subject.  It is mostly interviews with people "around" the band, and musicians who are fans.  There is very little film of the band. Mostly still photos, etc, but it is very creatively done.  I did not learn much that I did not already know.  However, the enthusiasm of those who were interviewed, from musicians (e.g. Chris Stamey, Mitch Easter), and also rock journalists who talk about how hearing the music was "life-changing",  echoed my own feelings about Big Star.  Interviews with Chris Bell's brother and sister were especially poignant.

Thank you! We just checked it out. Really interesting story. I'm happy to have caught up a bit about them.

  3. Oh, I didn't notice they actually billed it as such.  Is that true?

"Jeff Tweedy doesn’t like music festivals. “I often say, sort of semi-jokingly, that I wouldn’t go to any festival unless I was getting paid, because it’s just not in my nature,” the leader of Wilco says, citing discomfort with crowd sizes as well as the distance between stages at the major festivals that his band plays. “Most of the time, it’s an in-and-out proposition, trying to minimize the misery.”

Solid Sound—a Wilco-curated festival in its third year at the Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Art’s factory complex in the Berkshires—provides the exception. “If you go to a restaurant with a small menu and you can hone in on what you want, you always end up being a lot more satisfied, and that’s the way I look at Solid Sound,” Tweedy says. “It’s a lot more manageable, and it’s a festival that I think I would enjoy going to.”

  4. More crowded does not equal overcrowded.

This is a festival that bills itself as being the antidote to big, awful festivals. I just think they need to be careful where they tread. A lot of fans were annoyed by Saturday.

  5. Solid Solid attendance estimates from the North Adams Transcript:

"While official totals for the weekend were not available, estimates put the number of fans attending over the three-day event at 7,500 to 8,000.

"The numbers are notably up this year," Thompson said. "We had over 7,000 people including vendors, volunteers and security on the field Saturday night [when Neko Case and Wilco played] and we had no capacity issues. There was still room to move and it still felt civilized.""

Well there were some capacity issues. The bathrooms in the basement were shut down Sat due to flooding. The lines were super long at all of the food and drink vendors. It didn't feel good to me on Saturday and I kept hearing the same thing from other people throughout the later part of the day, particularly people who had attended SSF before and were missing the relaxed feeling of previous years. Mass Moca did a fine job, for sure, but the overcrowding took away of bit of the special feel of the festival that day, imo.

  6. I know Mountain Bed would be grateful if they just retired ITMWLY from the set list period.

Me too. It would be great to see them move on to a new way to close out shows...or actually if it changed every time and wasn't so predictable.

  7. I think the first year was between 5000-6000. This year, I bet it was 8000 on Saturday. Way too crowded feeling for me. A lot of what is great about this festival wasn't there for me on Sat starting mid afternoon. Sunday was back to normal though.

  8. But next time around I am hopping on that Holiday Inn right down the street from Mass Moca as soon as I can.

Good luck with that. We were able to stay there the first year and it was great to be able to walk to the museum, but no one I know has been able to get a room there since...even if you try to book before the dates are announced. I think that is now reserved for the bands, crew, etc.

  9. Since the program didn't show when each comics set started/stopped I had no idea when to even try to see any of them.

I know, that was odd, I thought. I just happened to need a break and cool off so I went inside and got lucky.

  10. Did anyone catch any of the stand up? We Didn't see any of it. We did see the yo la Tengo scored documentary...which I Unfortunatly fell asleep too.

We had woken up at 3:30am the night before..so it was almost impossible for me to keep my eyes open

Reggie Watts was phenomenal. If you get a chance to catch him. Do it!

  11. Just want to say a few things about this.

remphish1, I think you're cool and I hope you come back around at some point. Taking a break from this board is a fine thing to do from time to time. I think you simply made a mistake in judgement by choosing only to attend Fri night and that you should be mad at yourself for that, not the band. Most fans wanted to see something different from them and they delivered. It was pretty clear that it was going to be an unusual night so coming with specific expectations and making it your only show was a risk on your part.

As for being bored, I'll admit to being bored with the Sat night show. I even sat down a few times which I've never done at a Wilco show before. Part of that had to do with it being overcrowded and I couldn't get a close enough spot, part of it had to do with that maybe I've seen the band too much and there isn't much new happening right now and I wasn't crazy about the set list. Wilco seems a bit lethargic to me right now. Maybe they need a break or maybe I do. Probably I do.

Overall, I enjoyed the weekend very much. I loved the covers show especially Tommy Stinson coming out for a cover of Color Me Impressed, the midnight dinner was gorgeous and special, Beth Orton joining Sam Amidon for a song, I was happy to catch Sean Rowe & The Blisters, Glenn & Radio lab, Reggie Watts was crazy good...loved the cafe cortados, bloody marys, Xu Bing, Solid Sound Radio...I know this report doesn't belong here but I'm just saying all this so that I don't get blasted for being bored with Sat night  :angel

Anyway, take a break from the board and we'll be here when you come back. I hope you'll be back. I know you'll be back.

  12.

And Tommy Stinson joining them onstage....that was worth the Early Bird price of admission for me. We have a picture of Jeff with a huge grin on his face as he watches Tommy play. Priceless.

This was a highlight for me. I'd love to see your picture of that moment.

  13.

I think that Courtyard D is a prisoner of the heat.

Totally agree. I've been to all 3 SS Fests and I've yet to stick it out to see anyone on that stage. It's too hot and I just can't seem to find a good spot to feel comfortable in. I was thinking that the museum should challenge some artists to create some kind of a shade sail or something to help out at least a little bit.

  14. It was alright but being billed as "dinner with the band" was a big stretch. Tweedy went around the enormously long single table and high fived everyone. There was probably 100 ppl or so. At least.

Agree. I was told we were 160.

I only saw Nels, John & Jeff. They weren't exactly dining with us. More like stopping in. But I enjoyed it nonetheless and got a pic of my high five w Tweedy. The company was great though.
