  1. Longest:
600 miles & about 9 hours to Chicago for a pair of the all-request fundraiser solo acoustic Jeff Tweedy shows at The Vic. So great the first time, I did it again for a second year, but couldn't do this year- both for finances & because there was only one show. First time it was fly in & bus back, second time was driving to & from.
I'm generally pretty open to going that 4-5 (250 to 300 miles) hour journey without much hesitation (weather, schedule & finances permitting)- being located near Rochester, NY that means as far as NYC, Philly, NJ-Conn.,Toronto, Cleveland, Pittsburgh etc., etc. (& obviously Buffalo & Syracuse etc.)

    Shortest:
30 miles & 30 minutes to Rochester, NY for Wilco at the Highland Park Bowl. So great I decided to go to the Columbus, OH show a few days later too (up to that point my first Wilco show in Detroit was the longest, at 350 miles, but Columbus topped that at 400 miles... repeated a similar jaunt to Detroit to see Wilco & Richard Thompson at the AmericanaramA tour stop in Michigan & when they played together it was like a dream come true...which makes me look very forward to Solid Sound this year!!)

  2. Reviving this thread in light of the official announcement yesterday regarding Wilco's Friday show on the first night of Solid Sound 2015:
"For the first time ever, the guys will unplug their instruments and perform a full set of Wilco tunes acoustically. If you’ve seen the band on its recent tour you may have seen them do a mini-set like this (i.e.: this performance of “Casino Queen” from Wilco’s recent show in Indy), but as Solid Sound 2015 gets rolling they’ll turn Joe’s Field into an intimate living room and play a full acoustic set (with amplification).
“It’ll be a bit of an experiment,” Jeff Tweedy said, “but the Solid Sound audience is usually game for whatever we throw at them.”

The first couple of posts here present all the raw material of available acoustic/ unplugged songs from Wilco's recent 20th Anniversary Roadcase Show releases for you to create a "20th Anniversary Roadcase Shows Virtual Wilco Unplugged Album" (just like the thread is entitled...although technically it'll be a double CD's worth), as well as the recipe that worked for me in creating my own 2 CD set (with a few repeated songs & close to 80 min. a CD).  Enjoy!!

  3. And for those that might want to mix & match to make their own version of a "20th Anniversary Roadcase Shows Virtual Wilco Unplugged/ All Acoustic Album" (very simple to do with most any program, I did mine on iTunes)...I posted my 2 CD version recipe in the post above this one...

Here is the raw material below for creating a great Virtual 2 CD-R "Wilco 20th Anniversary Unplugged" set. In the previous post I gave you my recipe for how I ended up doing a 2 CD set of 79 minute CD's. Luckily it just worked out pretty easily...arrange 'em however you want. So we are working with the 3 Port Chester, NY shows (#37-39) & the 6 Chicago Winterlude shows (#40-45).

The Knoxville show (#36) had two hootenanny encore songs- "Misunderstood" & "California Stars"- both of which were repeated at both the Port Chester & Winterlude/Chicago shows...folks who would want to add those to the mix are welcome to. I won't personally, but others might want to add these third versions & jettison some of the other repeats that cross over between Port Chester & Chicago Winterlude (Give Back The Key To My Heart-twice, Too Far Apart, True Love Will Find You In The End, Be Not So Fearful & New Madrid).

4 Non-encore songs of acoustic nature from Chicago Winterlude shows:

Childlike & Evergreen (Jeff solo acoustic)
No More Poetry (Jeff solo acoustic)
Dash 7 (Jeff and Nels only; Nels on lap steel)
Shakin' Sugar (aka Alone) (Jeff, John and Glenn only)

24 Encore Hootenanny Set Songs from Chicago Winterlude:
    Outta Mind (Outta Sight)*
    Art Of Almost (original arrangement)*
    The Thanks I Get*
    California Stars*
True Love Will Find You In The End* [Daniel Johnston]
Give Back The Key To My Heart* [Doug Sahm]
Be Not So Fearful* [bill Fay]
I'm The Man Who Loves You*
    Too Far Apart*
    New Madrid*
    Dawned On Me*
    Dreamer In My Dreams*

    Whole Love*
    Shot In The Arm*

    Always In Love*
    Hoodoo Voodoo*

2 Non-encore songs of acoustic nature from Port Chester:
    Promising
    Bob Dylan's 49th Beard

11 Port Chester Hootenanny Encore Sets songs (which it should be noted, & it was in the reporting here, were "*performed partially without PA". "Casino Queen", "That's Not The Issue" & "Ripple" are unique to Port Chester, while the others also appeared during Winterlude):
    Too Far Apart
    Casino Queen
Give Back The Key To My Heart
True Love Will Find You In The End
    That's Not The Issue
    Be Not So Fearful
    California Stars

Give Back The Key To My Heart

    Ripple

  4. Since the first night is acoustic/ unplugged I'll take this time to share my recipe for a "20th Anniversary Roadcase Shows Virtual Wilco Unplugged/ All Acoustic Album", from a thread I posted in here awhile back...

"Here's how my 2 CD-R's worked out...I ended up choosing to drop the audience sung "Ripple" as cool as it was. Others might choose to drop the two extra versions of "Give Back The Key To My Heart"- it appears here on VOLUME I from the Chicago Winterlude shows, & then again twice from Port Chester on VOLUME II (the only song repeated in the whole Port Chester run).
Arrange 'em however it works best for you... collect 'em all, mix 'em up different ways, trade 'em with your friends... enjoy! ;)

    VOLUME I (79 minutes & 21 songs):
(16 Winterlude Encore songs from Nights 1-4, 4 songs a night, right in a row as they appear at the end of each show)

    Outta Mind (Outta Sight)*
    Art Of Almost *
    The Thanks I Get*
    California Stars*
True Love Will Find You In The End*

    Be Not So Fearful*
I'm The Man Who Loves You*
    Too Far Apart*
    New Madrid*
    Dawned On Me*
    Dreamer In My Dreams*
    Passenger Side*
I Got You (At The End of the Century)*
    Thirteen*

    Misunderstood*
(1 non-encore acoustic song from Port Chester Night #3)
    Bob Dylan's 49th Beard
(4 non-encore acoustic songs from Winterlude... 2 from Night #4, followed by one each from Night #3 & Night #1)
    Shakin' Sugar

    No More Poetry
    Childlike & Evergreen

    VOLUME II (79 minutes & 19 songs):
(1 non-encore acoustic song from Port Chester Night #1)

    Shot In The Arm*

    ELT*
    It's Just That Simple*

(10 Port Chester Encore songs from Nights 1-3, right in a row as they appear at the end of each show)
    Too Far Apart
    Casino Queen
Give Back The Key To My Heart
True Love Will Find You In The End
    That's Not The Issue
    Be Not So Fearful
    California Stars
    Misunderstood
    New Madrid
Give Back The Key To My Heart #2"

  5. Perhaps the best mention from Friday night's show was Jeff's comment about 'next year's show'..

Let's hope that this winds up being a two night affair...

My requests didn't include deep cuts as I thought I'd offer the new 'Everyone Hides' with 'Pot Kettle Black'.

    What a fantastic show!!!

"Next year's show..."!!! Right On! First I've heard mention of this tradition continuing! Such great news. I was wondering if it might end when his last kid finished the Montesorri school (which I think is very soon, if not already).

With no Solid Sound next year, I'd hope to possibly make this again, if it was a two night stand (too far to travel for just one show).

Great requests BTW- Know he chose "Pot Kettle Black", which is great, but I'd also have loved to have heard a version of "Everyone Hides"!!

  6. I hope they reconsider this.  I used to live in Chicago and saw quite a few of their shows.  I personally am against this law and have written my representative and senator about it.  It's great that they are making a stand but this is punishing fans that may also be against this law.  And going to another show out of state is not an option.

So sorry, & that seriously is a a tough price to pay for Social Justice, but hopefully worth it to you.

Personally I absolutely support their move!!! If it happened where I live, in New York State, I'd hate to see shows cancelled, but I'd support it... that, of course, it made easier by the fact that traveling to an another out of state show is an option for me...

  7. Looks amazing!!! And while I'm sure we'll most probably get Richard Thompson playing with both Wilco and Tweedy/Jeff Tweedy & Friends... I'm still a bit surprised, & disappointed, that they didn't end up having Richard Thompson play both acoustic & electric sets. Oh well, a minor point amidst some amazingly well balanced days!! Onwards to  Spring first, then Solstice & finally, Solid Sound!!!!

  8. First off... Just two nights of Wilco & one of Tweedy (assume they will close Sunday) for $125 would be worth it to start with. That this is is where it is (Mass MoCA), & it's run with such a sense of creativity, adventure & playfulness just take the whole thing to the next level as far as festivals go.

Second Richard Thompson!! He is up there in my personal top ten artists list. Not only is he playing, but he's pretty much certain to play with Wilco on, at least, one night(maybe two if we are lucky) & then there's even the potential for Nels & Jeff to sit in with him during his set/sets too...Whew!!
My greatest hope now is that they'll do for him what they did for Yo La Tengo (another artist on my top ten list) in 2013 & give him the chance to play twice. YLT did a regular set on Saturday & the movie soundtrack performance at the end of the first night on Friday. I'm hoping Thompson gets to do a set with his electric trio & then does a solo acoustic set as well.

Yeah OK, I understand...on paper I'm not sure if this is quite as exciting a list as 2013, but come on 2013 was a mind blower & then some. Looking at the older lineups this is, at the very least least, #2 with a bullet!!!
This is a great list of performers!!! Richard Thompson (electric trio), King Sunny Ade & His African Beats,, NRBQ (Terry Adams Band), Taj Mahal, The Autumn Defense, Stained Radiance (Nels Cline), Parquet Courts, Bill Frisell, Charles Lloyd Quartet, The Felice Brothers,  & Shabazz Palaces are all artists that I like, or love, to varying degrees.
Of the 11 acts I listed above I've seen the first 5 & listed them in order of my appreciation (note if it was the old classic NRBQ lineup they'd be #2, but while this is still cool, for me, it's more like The Terry Adams Band than NRBQ) & then the next 6 others I haven't seen & they are listed, roughly, in order of my level of excitement about getting to see them..
And finally, it's always a thrill to be introduced to new artists as well...and/or... to have some time to take part in some of the non-music act related activities (comedy section is, as always, very strong again this year). I was sick at the 2013 fest, so I'm looking forward to being more involved this time around. And the facility itself is always amazing & exciting!!

Looking at those past lineups I don't see a whole lot of room for any additions to this years (think we are pretty near a maximum load of acts here folks)...though, clearly, I could be wrong & who really knows? That Richard Thompson is playing, & will, almost certainly, be playing with Wilco, is truly the crowning jewel of 2015 for me & one that really matches the wonders of Yo La Tengo's presence there (2 sets & played 2 songs with Wilco on the covers show night) in 2013. But if there are any additions, anyone from my old standing list would be very welcome, & I'll go from most likely to least likely- Television, Sufjan Stevens... The Replacements, Donna The Buffalo, St. Vincent...I know a few of these are favorite artists for Jeff & the band, so maybe we'll see them in future years.

  9. umm, what?  I think there's a fly in the SolidSound Web Ointment.  Or they are in the midst of updating.  Or they are bringing back the exact same lineup:

    http://solidsoundfestival.com/lineup/

My guess is that they are currently updating, meaning the lineup should be here soon!

There are some different sections up, that I think are new, such as "2013 Lineup"  (you can even click on a link to other past lineups there), "Past Activities" & "Archived Photos"... guessing we'll here either this week, or next, who the first wave of performers are...

And here are all those amazing line-ups...just to refresh memories, whet the appetite & increase the antici-.....wait for it.... -pation! As Foghorn Leghorn would say- Anticipation that is...

  10. Since we're running out of time to play "guess the lineup", here's mine.

In addition to the Wilco’s and TWEEDY and all the side projects...

The top 4 that I fully expect to be there :

    - Richard Thompson

    - Jim Campilongo Trio

    - Cibo Matto

    - Lucius

The top 4 realistically possible that I would really like to be there :

    - William Tyler

    - Califone

    - Yo La Tengo

    - Andrew Bird

The top 4 “in my dreams” but not totally out the realm of possibility :

    - Joe Jackson

    - The New Pornographers

    - St. Vincent

    - Beck

Well Richard Thompson I think is a pretty certain one, but I'm holding out hope for both electric & acoustic sets!!! Like when Yo La Tengo played last year & did the film soundtrack performance & then their regular set...

Speaking of which, yeah, if anyone were to repeat, please let it be Yo La Tengo- who are celebrating their 30th anniversary this same year that Wilco is celebrating their 20th.

St. Vincent would be another absolute top shelf choice.

I think Cibo Matto are quite likely this year...speaking of which, I certainly hope that we also get a repeat of Nels Cline & Julian Lage too!

My dark horse hopeful, is Donna The Buffalo, who I think would be a great fit & who are just one of my half dozen favorite bands on the planet.

I'd also hold out hope for Sufjan Stevens, who is touring on a new release this year too.

I think Lucius is a very likely potential repeat act too, & very welcome as well...especially looking forward to them sitting in with Tweedy.

I'd love to see plenty of other folks & think Andrew Bird is a very likely  possibility...has he ever played Solid Sound before?

The other two biggies for me, who I think there's a possibility of, are Television & The Replacements.

  11. Damn, Jeff is gonna be tired!

Strange that they didn't mention Tweedy would be on Sunday night. Although that seems like an obvious assumption. I also read this as a short Tweedy set, a short solo set, and a short "Everyone set"...in other words a typical Tweedy show.

Pretty sure Luscious will be there now as well.

If John Hodgemen is returning, does that mean we will see another "all requests" show on Friday night?

I doubt it. I always figured that the request show was a chance to practice/perform songs that they had learned for the upcoming tour with Dylan and MMJ and all those special guests.

I'm sure hoping that we get another "all-request" show of covers again!!! I don't know if they'll do it, but I think it was an amazing idea & I totally adored it.

Last time I got my request, "And Your Bird Can Sing", & it got done twice no less... this time I'm hoping that they'd either open, or better yet close with my new request- "It's All Too Much"!!!

Speaking of "It's All Too Much"... camping reserved last week, & finished off getting the last tickets for our crew today...whew! Just in the nick of time... 140 days to go & counting down to the return of the wonders of the Willy Wonka's Chocolate Factory crossed with Pepperland that is Solid Sound...

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S5M2GtNpPE4

  12. I read this as three different sets. Am I the only one?

I don't think so. I think it'll be Wilco on Fri. & Sat. night & then the closing act on Sunday will go... A set of Tweedy, then Jeff solo acoustic & then the finale will be the Tweedy Band coming on to host a run of special guests. Looks like I'll be there until late on Sunday!!! This is exactly what I was hoping we might get...now if we can also pull off BOTH acoustic & electric sets from Richard Thompson...and the inevitable Thompson & Wilco/Tweedy collaborations that will occur as well- hopefully at every possible turn/opportunity. Really hoping that we get Nels Cline & Julian Lage again as well!!!

  13. where is the line up? I feel like every festival under the sun has announced their line up.

I want to know what I won't be seeing this year.

    Andrew Bird?

    The Replacements?

    Sufjan Stevens?

Sufjan Stevens would be amazing!! And he's out on tour coming soon as well (http://www.carrieandlowell.com/tour) to support his forthcoming album... tour dates, so far, run from 4/10 to 6/10, with a Festival date on 9/6 as well. So there's nothing that would currently conflict with Solid Sound.

I'm pretty sure we'll see Richard Thompson there (which, for me, is a dream come true on the scale of having Yo La Tengo there last time- hoping he does both full band electric, & solo acoustic, sets)... Andrew Bird would be welcome, & The Replacements would be just great too!!! I'm still holding out hope for Television...and my Dark Horse faves Donna The Buffalo- who I think would be an amazing fit... Lucinda Williams and/or Iris DeMent would be real nice as well

  14. Great news to start the day with!!!
""It's over three years since Wilco's eighth studio album, "The Whole Love", was released but the ninth might not be too far off. The band are back in the studio in February to get the process underway.
Tweedy believes it's the right time for Wilco to record again having played in Chicago before Christmas.
Tweedy emailed new songs to the other band members on New Year's Day ahead of their studio return. "It felt right," he said.
"It was a good start to the new year.". "

Of course Wilco did some recording work in 2014 as well... and apparently Jeff & Spencer have another album (assume it's a single disc this time) worth of TWEEDY material all mixed & ready to go too. I wonder where all of this will leave that potential next Loose Fur album? I'm guessing postponed indefinitely until these other two (forthcoming Wilco in 2015? & 2nd TWEEDY album).

  15. Every rumor I have heard about MMJ playing any festival so far has been correct (Gov Ball, Roo, Hangout). That being said I'm pretty sure MMJ will be playing SS15. Rumors are rumors so it's not definite until its announced, but it's something that's been going around. If they played I'd imagine they would headline Wilco's night off.

I know that wont sit well with a lot of people around here, but if they play I'll be super excited.

If that's true, I hope their fans will be happy, but I'm not one, so, at the very least, I really hope they don't end up as a headliner. What little I know about Jim James, he seems like a cool & nice guy, but I encountered these guys plenty at AmericanaramA & not only did they do nothing for me, but while I don't hate them, that nothing didn't go in a better direction with more familiarity...

  16. OK "Sukierae" now replaces whatever you used to consider Wilco's most underrated album...for me that is "Wilco (The Album)", for lots of others it's either that or "A.M.". I know this isn't a Wilco album, but then at the very least it's Jeff Tweedy's most underrated/overlooked/misunderstood album ever. If anyone else has some good year end list news to share in regards to this, feel free to chime in.

Because as far as I can see, this album is just not getting anywhere near the recognition it deserves in year end Critic's polls/best of year end lists. It's making some, but if at all, it's not that high on the list, & certainly nowhere near as high as it deserves to be. This was an opus & then some, a great double album that sits with the best great double albums, & along with "St. Vincent" by St. Vincent, it was one of my two, head & shoulders, favorite albums of the year.

Here's the most recent disappointing showing in the year end Village Voice Pazz & Jop Poll...it finished #128 with 84 points & only 10 mentions (by comparison the St. Vincent album, which finished #4, garnered 1224 points & 112 mentions)
    http://www.villagevoice.com/pazznjop/albums/

Here's the writers who did vote for it as being part of their top ten
    James Bradley
    Andrew Dansby
    Eric Danton
    Mark Deming
    Jill Ettinger
    Bill Holdship
    Marianne Meyer
    Seth Mnookin

  17. What are everyone's thoughts on going to two nights in a row?

I'm assuming if it's the same format, the band set would be pretty similar, but we'll probably get a different solo set list both nights, right?

He might vary the TWEEDY set by a song or two...Between Buffalo & Ithaca (a week apart) there were differences... unique to Buffalo- "Pigeons" & "Why, Why, Why" & "Please Don't Let Me Be So Understood" for encore... unique to Ithaca- "Honey Combed" & "Wait For Love" & "Jesus Wept" for encore...so you could have a few song minor variation...

Cross over for the acoustic set (12 songs in Ithaca...14 in Buffalo including a final acoustic encore) were 5 songs- "I Am Trying To Break Your Heart", "New Madrid", "Jessus Etc.", :The Ruling Class" & "I'm The Man Who Loves You"

My bet is there will be a couple songs of variation in the TWEEDY set & encores, & that you'll get a pretty different, maybe completely different, solo acoustic set each night.

  18. I was just talking to a friend about this at New Year's. I don't think there's much of any logistical way for me to go to both this, & Solid Sound as well this year. I wasn't sure if Sammy had graduated either, as Montessori schools usually only go through the end of Junior High School, which, I guess, means he must either be done, or close to done (don't know exact details there, just general age). The coming month of March now looks to now be pretty taken up by the recently added TWEEDY tour dates, so, if it happened at all, it'd most likely have to be sometime in April- and they have happened as late as early April before. There aren't any Wilco gigs until late April...

Also with both Sammy either having left the school, or he will be leaving soon, & Susie's continuing journey of healing going on being couple with the fact that Solid Sound is happening this year as well, I wonder if they might start doing two things...
    1) The aforementioned above possible shift from Scholastic Youth Scholarships to Leukemia & Lymphoma Society Charities instead...and..
    2) That these shows might happen now every other year, alternating to occur on the off years of Solid Sound...as in Solid Sound 2015, Vic Theater All Request Benefit Shows 2016, Solid Sound 2017, Vic Theater All Request Benefit Shows 2018, etc., etc. ...

Of course having 16 half solo acoustic shows in March could be a nice warm-up for an early April show, who knows? If it happened, & things had turned around for me financially...at least I'd have a shot at getting to finally tour Wrigley Field this time!! And...Opening day is April 5th, with the first afternoon game being on April 8th, & others on the 17-19th (possible to catch the afternoon game & the show maybe? Would have to balance that with trying to get a request in, since, barring rain, it would be the easiest year to do so weather wise).

If the shows are going on hiatus, or at the end of their run altogether, I'm glad I got to see these last two, which were my first two. I hope they continue in some form (betting on the alternating year thing & change in charities myself) & if so, that I'm able to make it out there.
