"Star Wars" out of the gates & Warren sitting in on "California Stars" (saw him, & better yet, Ian Hunter, sit in with them in NJ on the AmericanaramA tour)- sounds like it was a great night!! And this makes me just that much more excited about the Cleveland & Ithaca shows in September!! I hope the folks here thinking about going, went...curious to hear from them.
-
Waiting to see if playing the whole album becomes a trend... Fingers crossed it continues at this show and then over into LA!
We'll know pretty soon... hoping for that too...
-
To play a brand new record, in its entirety, at a festival, is a risky undertaking. They did it once in front of the hometown crowd; it will be interesting to see if they do it again. The 2 hour slot at this festival increases the chances a bit, I suppose.
But a risk he's chosen to undertake before & even more so.
RememberTweedy took out the new material from a double album debut to festival crowds & played all new, unfamiliar stuff in a much riskier situation- no free download out there, no brand name of "Wilco" to help things, a longer run of new music (12 to 13 songs totaling closer to 45 minutes) & new music that was, comparatively, of a more subdued nature (though, for the record, I think "Suikierae" is amazing & the songs he chose from it were a varied & eclectic bunch of wonders...just less rollicking, "out of the gates" & probably less "user friendly" than the 35 minutes of "Star Wars" 10 songs). I, for one, really hope they keep doing it start to finish. I think it works amazingly well that way!!
-
I think Wilco (The Album) has more highlights…Wilco (The Song), One Wing, Bull Black Nova, You And I, and Country Disappeared are all very solid tunes in my opinion. And I think Solitaire is one of Tweedy’s best-written songs. EVER.
Agreed! Finally someone who gets it. Everlasting Everything is not too shabby either.
Right On!...and... Right On! I've given up trying to rank them, but I'm still a huge champion of the severely underrated "Wilco (The Album)". When I saw Jeff solo, at the all-request benefit show a year or two ago, the person I was standing next to in line & I compared notes & both of our top requests were for "Everlasting Everything". When Jeff played it he noted that none other than Bill Fay had told him that he thought it was the best song he'd ever written.
I also agree that "Solitaire" is one of his greatest songs ever. And let me put in a word for "Deeper Down" here as well, since it's one that neither of you mentioned. Jeff did it, solo acoustic, at the Tweedy Washington D.C. show (it was my WilcoWorld request that night) & it was jaw dropping- a total fave. That covers almost the whole album now... So what's left out- "You Never Know", "Sonny Feeling" & "I'll Fight" & I have to say I don't hear a weak track amongst those either...and... I totally dig "Dark Neon"- especially the recent live takes on it.

Just to clear up some confusion about the Wilco set at GOTV...
Wilco is slated for a 2 hour time slot …. 9:15-11:15p
- Single day tickets are $80 in advance (now) and will be $100 at the gate (day of show)
- If you are a Bridgeport, CT resident you can purchase a weekend pass for $75 at gate with proper ID / proof of address
120 minutes (as opposed to the usual 75-90 for a "Festival Set" makes a real difference) that makes a pretty big difference.
They could much more easily come out & do what Jeff did with Tweedy at Festivals last year, & what they did at Pitchfork, which is open with the new material. If not, then 2 hours also gives them plenty of room to shuffle in a whole lot (maybe all) of the new album into the set.
If I was thinking about it, this factor would push me back over the fence towards going!! So you all take that for what you will, but I hope to hear happy reports back about the sonic wonders of the great gig!

The Loft has its own page on FB. You may be able to find more info there. Or at least pose the question and see if you get a reply post.
For all interested... The Loft page on Facebook (great folks who curate there!!)

I've just been going through and requesting every song off Star Wars for the LA show at the Greek - hopefully they'll get the point...
My strategy for Cleveland & Ithaca as well... you know what they say about great minds thinking alike- wonder how many others are doing the same? Hopefully more than a few & the message will land..if so, I bet that's gratifying...and it just looked like playing that full thing had then really energized. As others have noted, it really worked a cohesive piece incredibly well. And it's relatively short @ 35 minutes or so. Well we, & I'm sure many others are hoping that they continue that choice...
-
I want an option/choice for "play 'Star Wars' from start to finish!" !! Like at the Pitchfork Fest!!
-
Is it just me or is the audio on that YouTube vid way higher quality than the dropbox vid? Maybe I need to DL again.
I just checked it out, & despite my rather crappy computer sound system... it sounded at least as good on the download...my bet is that this might be where the youtube post comes from anyways...

5 Stars (out of 5) from The Independent, "Even by Wilco’s adventurous standards, Star Wars is possibly the most unusual, exploratory work of the band’s existence."
http://www.independent.co.uk/arts-entertainment/music/reviews/wilco-star-wars--album-review-jeff-tweedy-throws-down-the-gauntlet-with-a-radical-take-on-americana-10412763.html
9 (out of 10) from Drowned In Sound: "You might surmise from the above that Star Wars is a bit of a hodgepodge of styles, but that couldn’t be further from the truth. Everything sounds fresh, new and different, but every song is still recognisably Wilco; it just sounds like Wilco at their best. They’re my favourite band and this is an always-welcome reminder that my favourite band is better than your favourite band."

2) "More" by Jeff Tweedy
Ah a shallow tribe is born
Ah kid counterpart
Nah he hollowed out his heart
Ah oh now he wants
More than we have
More than there is
More than we have
More that there is
More than exists
Ah sewer watch was shown
Ah only 10 episodes
Ah it's everything I feel
Ah in a mask of mirrors
More than I have
More than there is
More than I have
More than I can give
More than I have
More than there is
More than I have
More that there is
More that exists
3) "Random Name Generator" by Jeff Tweedy

I belong to the stars in the day
I ran away eternal instigator
I was cold
I remember the Milky Way why I belong to the stars in the sky
Random name generator (x4)You don't know me cold as night
Somebody hold me in the diamond light
Narrator Mr. narrator
I want to name every new born child
A miracle only ever grows wild
Invisible
Instigator
Random name generator
I kind of like it when I make you cry
A miracle only once in a while
Random name random name generator
I change my name every once in a while
A miracle every once in a while
I create
I am the flame, a flame creator Random name generatorCom'on cuff me to the weed whistle whine
If I miss your breeze will you miss mine
I kind of like it when I make you cry
A miracle every once in a while
Com'on cuff me to the weed whistle whine I think I miss my family fine4) "The Joke Explained" by Jeff Tweedy
I never held your gaze
I never know my place
I stare at the eyes staring at my face It always ends in a tie
There is no knitting the divide
I cry at the joke explained
Ah but if I had known
If I had known
If I had known
I would have never believed
I never smoked my chain
Whoever measures the crest
Ah they can have my broken chest
It's a staring contest, in a hall of mirrors I sweat tears but I don't ever cry
Ah but if I had known
If I had known
If I had known
I would have never believed
I never knelt at the news
My parrot perished in the pews I climb back into the yolk
It always ends in a tie
There is no knitting the divide
I cry at the joke explained
Ah if I had known
If I had known
If I had known
I would have never believed (x3)
5) "You Satellite" by Jeff Tweedy, Glenn Kotche and Nels Cline
Somehow
A satellite
Can of light
Looks so red
Unbottle the halo
A satellite
Can chains change any failure when all along
Someone can change it
Follow on
Sometimes I don't hate it lately
What I don't know I'm gonna bleed it away
Reunite
The dynamite
Catch it all and reunite
Dynamite how high
I'm more moved by the maybe, it's ok
You can't sing what you can't give away
I've come all this way to hold your hand
I became a calendar while I was waiting
I - I won't live any what you can't give it away
I - I won't miss any what I'm giving away
Don't want to go and I don't want to stay
You satellite (x3)
6) "Taste The Ceiling" by by Jeff Tweedy and Scott McCaughey
I was only asking for a moment of the truth
I can't fight the feeling when I'm hanging out with you Why do I forgive you
Because I get confused
I could never leave behind the part of me that you refuse
Ooh
I was on the ceiling I could almost feel the sun
Try the words in sequence but that's never how it's done Why do our disasters creep so slowly into view
I was only after a friend to follow through
I couldn't lose
I know why you don't really know me I don't think you can call it home
All alone I couldn't taste another thing
I was on the ceiling and I swore it might be true
I could fight the feeling but not quite as well as you
I don't know won't you come and show me I don't think it's what you did before
All alone I couldn't take a case like you
7) "Pickled Ginger" by Jeff Tweedy
Alone in the zone of the sad
Where no one gives a zig to the zag
I'll never let you rot
I'll never bet you don't know
Some might glisten the knot
I'll never let it show
I know when I'm towing the drag
Where no one gives a zig to the zag
I might have to let you rot
I'm sad to let you go
I can't remember the night
I know what I'll never know
No one tells me how to behave
I'm mowing and I'm growing the grave
No one tells me how to be saved
I'll know till I go to my grave
I'll never let you rot
I'll never bet you don't know
Some might glisten the knot
I'll never let it show
I'll going to let it rot
You'll never guess what's below
Some might glisten the knot
I'll never let it show
8) "Where Do I Begin" by Jeff Tweedy
Alright at least you cried
A point of pride has torn in two
What was we where we meets you
From where we end to where do I begin
We're so alone
We're never alone
Forever in debt to the stomach I get
When things can't be known
Our paths overgrown
From where we end to where do I begin
Why can't we tell when we're in hell
Why can't I say something to make you well
When things can't be seen confined within the dream
From where we end to where do I begin
From what was left behind to you're my friend
I won't ever ever ever fall apart like that again
From where we are to where do I begin
9) "Cold Slope" by Jeff Tweedy
So so and you don't really care
Stand alone and you're there all day
Some would say you're never really there although you still take up space
I know I know and you know that I know it's a power play
I won't recognize you
I won't recognize you any more
So so and you don't really care
Stand alone and you're there all day
Some would say you're never really there although you still take up space
I know I know and you know that I know it's a power play
And I won't atone take some wild bile wicked entrees over chant lace fade
I'm on a cold slope raking down
Where is our receiver
Look on the phone
You can say what you want or I'll say what you want
Why turn the tape, undertake a weak wall
Summon the stone
I advocate aiming for the weak wall
Summon the stone
You can say what you want but you don't know what you want
I'll say what you want
Now I will say all I will say
I won't recognize you
I won't recognize you any more
10) "King Of You" by Jeff Tweedy
Wave after wave wishes unspoken
Talks like a blowtorch
Palms out and frozen
Who said it's easy language is losing
I swallow the steam and claim to be stupid
Nails on the threshold
Moon free don't make me the king of you
Past is a point behind the horizon
Bottom of the flame
Burning the garden
Smiling on the threshold
Moon free don't make me the king of you
Well I'm a soldier for you frightened climbing
Don't make me the king of you
Wave after wishes my boon companion
Talks to the frost but who will cheer the champion
11) "Magnetized" by Jeff Tweedy and Mikael Jorgensen
Orchestrate the shallow pink refrigerator drone
Carried in the shadows almost bone
Everyone wastes my time
The moment that you thought would murder motions you wait
Every apprehension alien ache ahh
Everyone wastes my time
Everybody goes I'm
I'm lonely
I sleep underneath a picture that I keep of you next to me
I realize we're magnetized
I realize we're magnetized
I realize we're magnetized
I realize we're magnetized

And maybe I'm wrong, since I don't think anyone else has mentioned this, but... it appears that Jeff is looking quite a bit healthier & leaner here & now. Anyhow, here we go...

4 & 1/2 stars (out of 5) from Rolling Stone!
"In the album's most carefree moments, of which there are many, he sounds at home in himself — never an easy move for one of rock's top chroniclers of midlife man-malaise. "I belong to the stars in the sky," he sings on "Random Name Generator," making a blues boast out of spacey poesy and totally pulling it off. Give it up for the man. He's got the Force by the spaceballs."

I'm glad to see the mostly positive reviews, but think overall the album is still being fairly consistently underrated. One's ever evolving subjective relationship to the work is really the bottom line, & I think history will be ever kinder to this one than the current reviews are.
There are two places where you can rate it & have your vote count- metacritic & rate your own music. So, if you are so inclined, stop over & weigh in, if you already haven't...
Anyhow, it's showing up on the metacritic radar now, with 12 reviews weighing in for a very respectable score of 83 (out of 100) from critics & 8.8 (out of 10) from users.
http://www.metacritic.com/music/star-wars/wilco
It's doing as well at metacritic, as it is, oddly, poorly over at rateyourmusic.com, where it's behind both "A.M." & "Wilco (The Album" & only ahead of "Wilco The Book CD" & "Mermaid Ave. Vol. III".
As the number of reviews increases, "Star Wars" score (85) on metacritic is going up & up... now above even "The Whole Love" (83), even with "The Mermaid Ave. Session" & "Kicking Television: Live In Chicago" & just behind "Yankee Hotel Foxtrot" (87)...pretty impressive. Other scores: "Sky Blue Sky" (73), "Wilco (The Album" (76), "A Ghost Is Born" (81)...
Things over at rateyourmusic.com are still pretty much the opposite... oddly enough (since the user rating at metacritic is 8.6)

Well that was odd. The ticket sales page defaulted to two tickets; I was only trying to order 1. I cleared my cart and started over, but got the same thing. Next, I didn't think there was an option and debated for a minute about just buying two tix and trying to sell the 2nd. The I finally figured out how to change the number of tickets (the option is at page upper right, away from the other ordering details, so not in my immediate line of sight - when I scrolled down to choose my desired section the ticket selection option went off screen.). Damn these mobile-friendly websites. Confusing as heck for an old dinosaur desktop user. So, I guess I got a decent seat but might have been even closer had I been able to figure out to do what I wanted to do, in the first place.
See you in Ithaca.
Let me know if you need to get rid of that Ithaca ticket Yaz Rock... I'm assuming that the show will sell out & I know quite a few folks who I'm betting will be looking for tickets.
For me it was that, as self-confessed non-tech friendly dinosaur myself (working on desktop to get this done), I had selected my tickets, but saw nothing to "checkout" or "continue", eventually I figured out you had to click on the actual type of ticket you'd selected... but I discovered this by chance. I ended up with 4 10th row tickets for Ithaca & 2 general admission floor for Cleveland, so all's well that ends well & I'll know how to use the system next time it comes up...but just on a simple operational/design level- having no clear indicator of how to checkout/continue is not a good thing.
See you in Ithaca indeed... and whoever else in Cleveland!

Giving this a shot. The exercise really opened up the album for me, and I loved it from the beginning. It also added depth to the title "Star Wars."
Anything in red is really questionable. I'd be interested to see other's takes.

Orchestrate the shallow pink refrigerator drone
Carrying the shadows up
Everyone wastes my time
I sleep underneath
A picture that I keep of you next to me
I realize we’re magnetized
I realize we’re magnetized
Realize we’re magnetized
Realize we’re magnetized
Just wanted to thank you so much for your efforts here. After a few listens, more & more lyrics come through, but this makes an aspect of engaging with the song that I adore, a much easier task. Way to go Brother Kyle!

Ithaca is in the middle of the week in late September- don't know your flexibility/schedule etc. ... but that's 5 hours from you, but it looks like the next closest, or you just gotta wait it out until the next leg of the tour & see if you get anything near you then. The State Theater is an absolutely amazing venue for music. Incredible sound, capacity of 1600 with not a bad seat in the house & tickets will likely be $40-50. And if you can spend anytime (sick day?), Ithaca is a very cool & very beautiful place/area. Tweedy played there & I believe Jeff said he ended up buying an amp from Rumble Seat Music ( ,http://www.rumbleseatmusic.com/home/?division=ithaca ) where, like a moth to the flame, I'm sure he'll be returning to this time. I got a mid-60's Guild F-212XL 12-string there a couple of years ago myself.
For the rest of what's here, file under... empowering not enabling...or...being a good bad influence...or...permission granted...
Otherwise...it's 90 min. away & probably a 90 min. set for $80 at a larger than Solid Sound level outside Fest, certainly not ideal but... it's a crowd around the size of a hockey arena crowd & bets are the sound will be plenty good. And I really think there is a distinct possibility that they might repeat the whole doing the full new album to open the show bit & for me that'd be a huge plus. If I were you, & I couldn't make another, I'd just go for it, for sure. It's Summer, the new album is absolutely great & this is happening in a fast & exciting way & you can be a part of it all Instant Karma like with the first show after the live debut of all the new material at Pitchfork. What's not to love about all of that? I doubt you'll feel bad if you go, & you probably will if you don't. Warren Haynes will be the equivalent of a fine opening act too. He plays before Wilco & after in some all-star jam. I'd likely just get there with time to catch him at 7:30 & leave either right after Wilco (10:45 end), or a little into the jam (11:45 start).
If you can do Ithaca, I'd hold out for that, but before I knew about it (as I think I wrote to you in a PM here) I was taking a long look at the potential +/- of Gathering Of The Vibes myself (which is 5 hours- that or the Toronto TURf Fest, which is 3 hrs. but it'd screw with other plans I have). I'm very Blessed this time around with Ithaca about 90 min. away & Cleveland 4 hours (with a chance that I can a Buffalo pal to drive 3 of those 4), so I'll be able to get to both on 9/17 & 9/23. It's really too bad that both The Tedeschi-Trucks Band and Sharon Jones & The Dap-Kings (those two are touring together) are both on Friday. If they were on Saturday I think I would be there myself!!
Nels is on tour a lot from mid-Oct to mid-Nov., so I'm guessing it'll mostly be a late year run of dates (mid- November or post-Thanksgiving) & we can hope that they do their NYC area run (3 shows the last two times they've been in the area- 2012 & 2014) before 2016, but there's certainly no guarantee. Carpe Diem! -
And here's what you get for signing up...
"Thank you for signing up. Click below to download an exclusive free Roadcase from the St. Augustine show on May 1st, 2015."- mp3 version BTW -
Nels has a busy schedule coming up, probably means not much Wilco after the just announced gigs:
18-Oct le poisson rouge New York, NY 20-Oct Narrows CenterHeads up there's a few typos here. I noticed because I'm going to see Nels & Julian in Ithaca, NY & probably Erie, PA too & those are Oct. 23rd & 24th (here it looks like the 24th & 27th). I think something happened with listing North Hampton wrong...things get right again
I tried to copy from his website & it came out screwy here too...
Here's a link to the dates
-
New album, new tour dates. William Tyler supports. Presale Wednesday, on sale Friday.
Sept 16 - Kalamazoo State Theatre - Kalamazoo, MI
Sept 17 - Masonic Auditorium - Cleveland, OH
Sept 21 - Le Métropolis de Montréal - Montreal, QC
Sept 23 - State Theatre of Ithaca- Ithaca, NY
Sept 24 - Hill Auditorium - Ann Arbor, MI
Sept 25 - Indiana University Auditorium - Bloomington, IN
Sept 28 - Orpheum Theater New Orleans - New Orleans, LA
Sept 29 + 30 - Stubb's Austin - Austin, TX
Lucky Austin with the double. My only regret is that Yo La Tengo is opening their tour in Troy, NY on Sept. 23rd, but I'll see them on Sept. 30th in Toronto (& maybe with Nick Lowe on Oct. 10 in NYC). So it's both fairly nearby Ithaca, NY & close enough Cleveland, OH (especially if friends from Buffalo drive!).
And then hope the usual nice 3 night run in the NYC area later in the Autumn. That should do just fine!! And in between the two Wednesday shows in September are The Feelies playing two gigs in the NYC area on Sept 19 & 20 (Monty Hall in Jersey City on Sat. & Storm King Sculpture Park just south of Poughkeepsie on Sun.)...Wa-Hoo!!!

Glad to see some excellent reviews here... sadly it's not fairing so well over at rateyourmusic.com, where it's currently the lowest rated regular Wilco release ever (only "Wilco The Book" & "Mermaid Ave. Vol. III" are lower)?!?! Go figure, eh?
