  1. Well, this is better than when the Beatles did She Loves You (Sie Liebt Dich) or I Want To Hold Your Hand (Komm Gib Mir Deine Hand) in German.

Those versions were always good for a chuckle or two.

Same thing when David Bowie sang Heroes (Helden) in German.

  2. Creative Loafing (the free magazine in the Tampa Bay area) never has much positive to say about anything. I have never seen a review in that magazine gush over something they like, while at the same time they take considerable joy in making mean remarks about something they didn't like.

I think this is the "meh" attitude that someone would always post that Jeff mentioned awhile back.

It's interesting that they would say that the Stratz Center isn't a good venue for them. I too, have seen them four times in the Tampa Bay area, and the 2005 show they performed in the same venue was (to me) the best show I ever saw.

  3. I think it's a combination of things that determine what songs they will perform.

I requested I"m Always in Love for the Tampa show last night and they did it.

But I read recently that they try and do songs that they haven't done before in any one city.

In this case, they hadn't done I"m Always in Love Tampa Bay area since 1999.

So it's probably a combination of what you request, have they done the song in the area, and how many people have requested the song.

I also think there are songs (even on the request list that's available on the site) that they wouldn't touch.

But hey, I requested I'm Always In Love and last night I heard them do it live for the first time.

What other band will do that for you?

Wilco loves you and I'm a happy guy!

  4. >Robby, they did do I'm Always In Love at Jannus Landing in 1999. That was my first Wilco show, and it rocked! I was hooked from then on. Back then, it was like a secret knowing about them.

Yeah, I thought I heard a recording of the Janus Landing show in which they did it, but my first Wilco show was in 2002 at Tampa Theatre.

I see today somone's already got a recording of last night's show posted on EZ Torrent (Dime A Dozen) that they recorded on their I Phone.

Man, Wilco fans are a dedicated bunch!

  5. Love this show!. My wife and I were up in one of the gallery level boxes but the sound was excellent even from way up there!

They did a song I requested - I'm Always In Love. This makes the 4th time in the Tampa Bay area that I have seen them and that's the first time they did that song here (well, they might have done it at Janus Landing in St. Petersburg in 1999, but I didn't see them then). Had a fantastic time.. thanks, guys!

Also thought Purling Hiss was the best opening act I have seen (with the possible exception of Randy Newman opening for James Taylor sometime back in the late 70's).

Does anyone have a setlist from their set? I would like to look into their music a bit more.

  6. Bought my tickets for the Tampa show today. Yeaa! Had decided not to go because I'm getting old and fat and when both your back and knees are bad, it get's kinda hard to stand. Changed my mind today and it might be for the better - nothing left on the floor, but got some box seats in the nosebleed section. Kinda cool since the boxes have only six seats in each box so I won't have to worry about standing if I can't. Don't know how good the acoustics will be that high up. Saw them in the same venue in 2005, but we had 2nd row seats at that show so we wound up right at the edge of the stage -sounded really good from there!

  7. Thanks for posting your playlists. I think they will help: Uncle Tupelo 101.

    You are very welcome!

I sincerely hope you can find the reissued versions of the UT albums as they contain some fantatstic extras including: Left In The Dark, I Wanna Destroy You, Sin City and an incredible live recording of CCR's Susie Q.

  8. I was a very slow train coming around to UT.

About 6 months ago I created two mixes of their music for my ipod and have since fallen in love with listening to them.

The mixes helped me to get my feet wet with UT and since then the water has been fine!

I realize there will probably be howls of dis-satisfaction with these two mixes as they do leave out what even I would consider some of their better songs.

However I made cuts on these mixes in order to give JT what some might consider an undeserved but equal footing.

I don't think he was as developed of a songwriter-singer as JF was at the time.

But I kinda wanted this also to be a "call & rsponse" mix especially the second half of the second set.

I also (for my own weird reasons) wanted these two mixes to be each approximately the length of two LP's and feel like albums with a beginning, a middle and an end - sort of a chronicle of the group.

So for better or for worse, here is my two cents on the topic:

    Mix 1

    01 - No Depression

    02 - Graveyard Shift

    03 - That Year

    04 - Looking For A Way Out

    05 - Nothing

    06 - So Called Friend

    07 - Gun

    08 - Life Worth Livin'

    09 - True To Life

10 - Left In The Dark

    11 - Flatness

    12 - Screen Door

    13 - John Hardy

    Mix 2

    01 - Grindstone

    02 - Black Eye

    03 - Still Be Around

    04 - Wait Up

    05 - Atomic Power

    06 - I Wanna Destroy You

07 - No Sense In Lovin'

    08 - Whiskey Bottle

    09 - Cold Shoulder

    10 - Chickamauga

    11 - The Long Cut

    12 - Fall Down Easy

    13 - Steal The Crumbs

    14 - We've Been Had

PS, if you ever do try Spotify, I do believe I have posted at least the first mix out on it - I haven't been on Spotify for awhile because I posted it for my family in order to encourage them to take an interest, don't think anyone ever listened to it.

  9. the guitar player casually sauntered over to him and gave a gentle nudge to the phone w/ her foot. it was pretty awesome seeing the guy's face.

At a 2005 show Wilco did in Tampa, Jeff grabbed a girl's cellphone and began conversing with the person she was talking to - her mother. I remember that he had to explain to the mother who he was ("uh, this is Jeff, I'm the singer in the band.") He also told this girl's mom that , "No she didn't look too drunk." All of this took place in the middle of the band playing Kingpin. I think he also told the girl after the song had ended and he had given the phone back that "Wow, your mom was really mad at me." This was hysterical and personally I think Jeff ought to start grabbing more phones and reading to the audience what they were texting.

  10. Unless I missed it, I'm surprised no one has mentioned the movie, Passenger Side - a feature film with Adam Scott. It looks like it didn't get very good reviews from the IMdB rating, but I have to say that I saw it and liked it - had a '90's indie film feel about it. The Wilco song is done over the closing credits. Here's the link to the movie on IMdB:

  11. I enjoy a lot of versions of this song, but one of my favorites was done on July 25, 1999 - Old Town School Of Folk Music Festival.

Just Jeff on guitar and Jay on the piano, but Jay's piano fills on this version are beautiful.

You can find the song on the Owl & Bear site - download and give it a listen, you'll probably find that you'll want to download the rest of the concert after hearing this different approach to the song.

  12.

Side note: I'm new here, and am looking for some tapings of recent shows. I'm looking for mp3, and I found only FLAC files on the owl site. Can anyone point me to a source, or does someone have a link for 12/7? Thanks!

Why not just downlad the Flac files from O&B and convert them to MP3?

I know a lot of purists would scream about doing that, but I don't convert them to share, just so I can listen to them on my MP3 player.

There are a lot of Flac conversion programs out there. I use dBpowerAMP Music Converter (costs about $40), but if you go to CNET and search under Rippers & Converting Software, I know you can find some freeware or shareware programs to use.

Owl & Bear is just too much of a treasure trove to pass up just because of a file format diffrence.

  13. I doubt that is a real category.

    Does it really matter?

The Grammys would just make up a new category.

I'm waiting for the Alternative Country Experimental Noise Pop Independent Americana Category.

    Wilco should sweep that category.

Unless of course they get placed in the Hard Rock/Metal Category.

Then they'll probably lose to Jethro Tull
