  1. I guess I should have titled the thread "this article says something nice about Wilco but feel free to find other issues with it"  :dontgetit

Sorry, no offense meant.  I agree with what he has said. Respect should be paid to Wilco & Phish for redefining how a band can be successful in the music business, however harder it might be these days.

It's just he just had a lot of different thoughts within one set of parentheses. :shifty

  2. I've used dBpoweramp Music Converter for years, but I'm not sure if there's a freeware version of it anymore.

I have gotten into the habit of creating a "Mp3 Versions" folder that I keep in every concert I download so that I can play it on my IPod.

I usually convert the Flac files to 320 kbps bit rate Mp3's and they sound fine.

  3. I heard "Stuck in the Middle with You" last night and the vocals reminded me of Jeff. On the nasal side, a little twangy, similar pitch. That would be a fun one to hear them cover! But the downside would be we'd all have this disturbing image of John cutting off Pat's ear.

Funny, last night, I heard an old (late 70's) bootleg recording of Jackson Browne's "For Everyman" and it reminded me of Wilco - thought they would do a good job of covering it.

  4. OMG, Entertainment Weekly managed to squeeze in a short review of Star Wars between their adulation articles about Kayne, Taylor Swift & Beyoncé. They even gave it an "A-".

We can now all rest easy.

  5. Are they still up on Dime? I've been looking for the 2007 SBS video ever since I heard that a copy of the complete performance was in the wild. I was in the front row at the taping and wouldn't mind seeing it all again.

The AGIB show was also very special. Mr. Cline's solo on Ashes of American Flags is my all-time favorite.

    Hi Hixter,

If you want to PM me your address I can send you a copy. It's a data DVD and the shows are in an .avi format.

  6. I have downloaded a lot of Wilco & UT video's from Dime. Recently there was a 1995 show posted from the SXSW festival on the site. It sounds like AM had just been released when the show was filmed.  Some of the UT shows I have were dramatically upgraded from what you can get on YouTube - they still might be on Dime. They're "amateur" videos, but crystal clear and it's rather funny to see a tray full of long necks floating across the screen in front of the band.

However my favorite are 3 Austin City Limit shows that were done in support of Summerteeth, AGIB and SBS. They are unedited, uncensored raw footage. One of them even starts with color bars and all start with a member of the ACL staff giving the audience instructions (turn off your cell phones, etc.). The AGIB one is the best - Mikael playing a (baby?) grand piano for most of the show.

  7. Do you think this conversation took place?

Tony: OK, so what are you going to call the album?

Jeff: I dunno, we're kicking around a few ideas.

Tony: So when do you want to release it?

Jeff: We decided to give it away for free over the internet in the summer, release it on CD in the fall, and put the vinyl version out at the beginning of the Christmas season.

Tony: You want to try to sell the same album on vinyl during Christmastime that you gave away for free in the summer? Don't you think it'll get a little lost in all the competition that's out there at that time of there year?

Jeff: Well, what's our competition going to be at that time?

Tony: Oh God, it's the same old fare. Another James Bond movie, another Hunger Games movie, another Star Wars movie..

Jeff: Hmmm. Let me get back to you on that title.

    Probably never happened...

  8. For those of you having a problem downloading the show from Dime a Dozen:

If you use uTorrent, make sure your version of the program is no later than 2.2.1.

I like the program and have used it for years, but it always asks me install a new version.

McAfee always tries to install an updated version for me as well.

It took me awhile searching thru Dime's Wiki, but I found that any newer version of the program won't work on the site.

The Wiki has a link to the 2.2.1 version.

I used that after first uninstalling the newer version of uTorrent and my problems with Dime vanished.

    Hope that helps some folks.

  9. A few more words about the Byrds, especially Untitled - it brings back a lot of memories. Two album set  - one record live, one studio. It was actually available for check out at the Idaho Falls Public Library where I worked for between 1970 - 74. I loved the live record. The studio record was ok, but there was a cringe-worthy song - Chestnut Mare. I say that because I cringe when I think how much I liked that song at the time. But could you imagine if Jeff Tweedy writing lyrics like this:

I'm going to catch that horse if I can

And when I do I'll give her my brand

And we'll be friends for life

She'll be just like a wife

I'm going to catch that horse if I can

  10. I am proud to say that I have gotten my share ration up high enough on Dime A Dozen (or EZ Torrent if you prefer) so that I can safely download about 30 GB worth of media and still maintain a respectable ratio.

First of all, many thanks to Analogman for steering me to so many wonderful Wilco concerts & videos on the site!

My question now is, what other non-Wilco related concerts or video that are currently seeded on this on this site would you recommend?

I love live music and usually prefer a matrix or soundboard recording, but it can be an audience only recording as long as it's good quality.

I'm open to any artist, but would ask that you don't suggest a recording/performance that you did not personally create or attend. I would prefer that it be a show that you feel is good based on only what you heard after you downloaded it from Dime..

I'll start this off by suggesting one I found:

Elvis Costello and the Attractions / Cleveland / 12/05/77 (titled: "Angry Young Sod").

This was a great recording considering it is 38 years old. It has a fantastic balance with a respectable bass & drums that is missing in a lot of EC shows recorded at that time. It doesn't sound "tinny".

Thanks in advance for your suggestions and I look forward to hearing from all of you!

  11. I usually like shows in which they tried out different versions or songs they had not released yet.

The post-Jay, pre-Nels era was good as Jeff had to rely more on himself for the guitar parts and did a great job.

Around this time you'll hear alternate versions of Muzzle of Bees, Spiders and Less Than You Think.

A lot of the Jay era is good as well.

I have been mixing in songs from a concert on 08/12/00 in which they did a two guitar version of I'm always in Love.

It sounds like they just used a piano and Jeff whistled the organ/electronic keyboard bridge in the song.

I also liked when they did a full band version of Gun and Jay jumped over to the piano for the softer part of the song.

But I also love the covers concert from the last Solid Sound.

It was great to hear Nels, Pat & Jeff all playing on Marquee Moon, And Your Bird Can Sing and The Boys Are Back in Town.
