  1. Why isn't Justin Bieber on this list ??????

....did you ever think that Jeff Tweedy would be on the same list as Rihanna or Kayne West?

I wouldn't think you would ever find them in the same news article much less the same list.

  2. That one isn't on owl & bear ... anyone have a clue on where to get it?  Sadly, I was back at college at the time of that show, or else I would definitely have been there too.   :(

This was a little tricky, but if you go to the Wilco Base site and the page listing this concert, there is a link to the Owl & Bear download page for this show. I just finished downloading the songs and listening now - good concert! (SBD recording). Hope this isn't a violation of any of the rules, but here is a link to the O&B page:

  3. Wilco On Demand

I have Bright House for my cable company and they have a lot of stuff available On Demand for free as part of the package.

One of the networks that's available on demand is Palladia.

One of the choices listed under Paladia is labeled "Singles" which apparently features individual cuts of songs from concerts that the network presents.

One of the singles available in this category is Wilco's performance at the 2012 Beach Hangout Festival.

Unfortunately the song for Wilco's performance is listed as "Born Alive".

(sigh) Those poor guys never get any respect..

  4. Maybe it's just me, but in some of the live soundboard mixes on Owl & Bear of I Got You (At The End of the Century) in which John's vocals seem to be more prominent, I hear him sneeze - in other words: "AhhChoo!" rather than "It's you!'

  5. I have been listening to, and loving two concerts from that era.

These are available on Owl & Bear and I would highly recommend downloading at least the following standouts from these concerts:

    09/04/2003

Kingpin - Something they usually do not open with, but they do here so it's not so drawn out.

Should've Been In Love - Beautiful version with the piano out front and a slow/quiet ending.

Box Full OF Letters - Jeff & Leroy doing some fine guitar work here.

Less Than You Think - A short, droneless version. I think if Wilco had recorded this abbreviated version, it would be a big favorite with many more fans.

    06/24/2003

Muzzle Of Bees - A faster, uptempo early version of the song, the chorus was a little dodgy, but has a great false ending.

Spiders/Kidsmoke - I think this is the best version and performance I have ever heard of the song. A good mixture of the studio and current versions of the tune. To me this really demonstrates a great interplay of guitar work between Jeff & Leroy.

Listening to these concerts on headphones (and cheap ones, no less) really debunks the idea that post-Jay/pre-Nels days were lacking. I think there were many concerts they did during this time that were not as stellar, but listen to the songs I listed above and tell me that you don't love 'em!

  6. I think this was discussed earlier in this thread, but I got The Brussels Affair a few months ago and my God, is that good!

Say what you will about Brian Jones or Ronnie Wood, but when the Stones lost Mick Taylor, they really took a hit.

Taylor & Richards just shine on that performance.

  7. i too saw the wilco reference in treme. the optimist in me wanted to believe that was foreshadowing, though, the realist in me thinks it was just wishful thinking.

Yeah, I think HBO's canceling Treme.

A pity, it was nice to see a show that respected original music so much.

I've always made a point to listen to this show through my home theatre speakers rather than just the TV speakers.

  8. A few thoughts (scratch that, many thoughts):

First of all you're not full of shit.

Many artists folow a bell curve - most are shaped more like a steep triangle.

Personally, I think Wilco would benefit by bringing in someone else to mix/produce their next album.

Many believe you should not produce your own albums.

Most people say that YHF was Wilco's best, but I don't think it would have been so well received if their original mixes had been released as the album.

I realize that the music we hear on the Sam Jones film or the engineer demos, were just that, demos, but I think Jim O'Rouke really made a difference on that album.

Certainly the sonic mixing he brought to AGIB is evident, especially if you listen to it on headphones.

He has a remarkable ability to focus your attention on one instrument or vocal in a recording.

I think the last album would have been a lot better if he had gotten his hands on the tracks.

Last thought: why does everyone seem to want to judge a Wilco album as a whole?

In this day when you can buy one song at a time, why not make your own album?

Personally, I'm not a fan of Billy Bragg, so my version of Mermaid Avenue is one album with just the songs Jeff sang.

I don't like some songs on A.M. or Being There so I have cut some songs out and made two single albums to listen to.

My version of Summerteeth begins with Pieholden Suite and ends with The Lonely 1.

I guess sometimes we feel like we have listen to an album like the way my parents used to make me eat dinner: '..you can't have dessert until you eat your peas & carrots..'

If I just want to eat dessert, I'll eat dessert.

If I just want to eat carrots, I'll eat carrots.

Wilco makes a lot of good meals and they can still cook, but ya don't have to like every course.

Just take what you want or like and enjoy!

But that's just my opinion and I'm full of shit too.

  9. Well they have changed arrangements on songs in the past so it's not such a crazy idea. For example, Spiders is a much better song with the new arrangement.

First let me say that I too like the latest version of Spiders, however, I don't know if it's all that new. I happened to listen to a show Wilco did on 09/04/03 the other night and was suprised to notice how similar the version was to how this song is played currently. It's certainly not an exact match, but its closer what they're playing now than the version they've played from 2005 until this year. The concert was pre Nels & Pat (Leroy Bach was playing with them at that time) so I don't know if that had something to do with it. The show is on Owl & Bear - Disc 1, Track 11 if you just want to download the one song to listen how it compares.

No to get too far away from the original thought in this thread, but the freak out section of Via Chicago has always made me think of turbulence on a plane. Stupid, I suppose, I guess the word "Via" puts me in a air traveling frame of reference.

  10. I understand if the moderators feel this topic is in the wrong forum, however I think a lot of us have a tendency to only look at this forum and miss some of the others - I know I am guilty of doing this. I know notification of these concerts are aleady in the Future Age forum but I wanted to get the word out to people who might otherwise miss these.

There have been two Uncle Tupelo video concerts that have been lovingly restored and now are posted on EZTorrent (formerly Dime A Dozen). You may have seen individual songs from these concerts posted on YouTube, but these concerts are light years ahead in terms of quality. They were shot on a Sony Hi8mm camera and synced to Digital Audio Tape. I am by no means an expert here, but I recall these were probably the best technology commonly available to the average person at that time.

    As I said two concerts:

    Jakes, Bloomington,In 1992-11-10

    Mississippi Nights,St Louis,Mo 1994-04-30

The 92 concert is mostly acoustic while the 94 one is mostly electric. I think it was probably because 92 was in support of their March album & 94 was done for Anodyne. Brian Hennemann and Bill Belzer play on the 92 show, while Ken Coomer, John Stiratt and (I believe, Max Johnston) play on the 94 show.

These were shot on a single camera, but the close-ups are incredibly sharp & clear, even better then the whole shots of the stage.

Its kinda funny to see Jeff & John standing next to one another playing ultimately what would be each other's instruments once Wilco began to happen.

I am amazed at Ken's drumming, I had know idea he banged out these songs as hard as he does. When I see him in early Wilco video, he seems to play a lot quieter. Bill looks like a 15 year old kid in the 92 show.

If you don't know how to download torrents and burn DVDs, these concerts are worth the effort it would take to teach yourself. You will not be disappointed - you'll see Wilco where they began.

  11. I guess one of the reasons I value this so much is that in real life I know practically no one who is a fan, or who even is really much of a music fan, period. And since Wilco has become such a passion for me, it feels so validating to have this extended family of people who can relate.

I agree with you 100% on this.

I can't get any of my friends or family interested in Wilco - the most I get is a polite shrug.

After awhile, I start to feel like the character Jeff sings about in Golden Smog's I Can't Keep From Talking.

I mean my wife has "suffered" thru 4 concerts with me, but she just gave me a blank stare when I told her about this high quality Uncle Tupelo video I found on EZTorrent over the weekend.

But I posted (In a Future Age) about the video and two VCers thanked me calling it to their attention.

Feels a lot better than a blank stare - thanks everybody!

It's nice to have a feel-good thread every once in awhile.
