Another kick in the teeth for the nation and its laws.

I just noticed that the albums are #1 and #2 on Amazon's indie sales chart. Number 3 is the Arctic Monkeys album.

In the spirit of bipartisanship, I'll say bullcrap instead of the more divisive and disenfranchising 'bullshit.'

That figure sounds a bit high.

Not a great week for startup companies in the space biz. I think I'll hold off on the whole space tourism thing for a few more years.

I'm in Orange County to take care of my daughter after surgery and I'm in that uncomfortable position of needing to buy candy, but not knowing how many kids to expect, as she's only lived in this apartment complex for a few months. When I lived in OC I would only have 5 or 6 trick-or-treaters. In San Antonio I typically have a hundred or more kids. It's a big social affair that is always accompanied by several wheeled coolers full of beer and wine.

He seems intent on bringing the world back to the Soviet era and the Cold War. People under 30 don't remember what it was like, but their children might be learning to duck and cover in the next few years.

I don't recall any pissing or screaming matches.

It depends on whether the gun control consists of a ban on gun ownership and confiscation of existing weapons. The American people have spoken out against such measures. Other than bans/confiscations, we already have some rather robust controls in place.

President Obama's about-face has nothing to do with secret government and everything to do with harsh reality. I doubt he wants to spend billions upgrading our nuclear weapons, but the warheads and missiles are decades old and it would be a dereliction of duty to allow the Chinese and Russians to modernize their arsenals while allowing ours to degrade. People who thought that his more audacious campaign promises were anything more than empty promises made in order to garner votes haven't paid much attention to how political campaigns are run.

Just finished voting like a good citizen. Early voting was my only option since I'll be out of town on Election Day. A note to the Green Party: leave the nicknames off the ballot unless it's something like 'Tex.' Who in their right mind would vote for a senator named 'SpicyBrown'?

Discerning Who fans will notice that my avatar shows Keith Moon with a tube of Clearasil, not Medac. I believe the Australian version of Sell Out was the only LP to feature the Clearasil photo.

Young and healthy doesn't matter where some diseases are concerned. It does with the flu (90% of deaths are elderly) but not with diseases like AIDS or Ebola. It'll be interesting to see how effective plasma injections from Ebola survivors turn out to be. I think the nurses were injected, but the dead patient in Dallas wasn't, due to an incompatible blood type. Luckily for me, my blood type makes me a universal recipient. It's stupid to compare different causes of death. Would the fact that more than twice as many people in this country die in automobile accidents than die of AIDS merit

Not even the slightest bit of sting. I could probably spend all day walking the streets of Texas and not find a single person who cared what out-of-staters think about Texas. I'm sure the same goes for just about every state and its residents. No offense taken, even though the governor is a family friend, but I find Crist to be thoroughly reprehensible. Anyone who says, with a straight face, that he was a conservative, pro-gun Republican before becoming an anti-gun Democrat is a little too comfortable with lying for me. God knows almost any politician will say almost anything to get elected
-
And his opinion piece closes with an anti-gun paragraph; that's all I need to know about the author. Like a good gun hater, he triples the casualty count by including suicides.
-
Percentage-wise it's less than half a percent, but take a look at the signatures and you'll see that most of them came from non-residents, i.e. the "I hate Texas, so let them leave" crowd. It's by definition just an estimate/prediction, but cases have been doubling every 2 weeks in Africa. Previously, the largest number of deaths in an Ebola outbreak was 280. We're at almost 20x that rate currently, so it's clear that this outbreak is exceptional in almost every way.
-
The 1.4 million cases of Ebola prediction comes from the CDC.
-
No, there isn't. And Rick Perry doesn't support secession.
-
As long as they eat monkeys and bats we'll have ebola outbreaks. It'd be cheaper for the rest of the world to just airdrop chickens (WKRP, anyone?) and cans of Spam to them instead of spending hundreds of millions of dollars to fight and treat Ebola. While we're at it, the Chinese government needs to teach its citizens that living in close proximity to chickens and other fowl is a bad idea.
-
The CDC and WHO are saying it's the worst public health threat since AIDS (30+ million dead, 30+ million infected) and that we may have passed the point of being able to control it in Africa, with 10,000 new cases per week and a prediction of 1.4 million infections. Those warnings are dire enough, I don't need to watch ratings-craving blowhards -- whatever their political affiliation. I'm not a betting man, but we've already had 2 infections courtesy of Mr. Duncan. I think the other patients are being transferred to better facilities outside of Dallas, so hopefully the pros will be able to
-
It's spread too far geographically to be able to contain it in Africa. Typical outbreaks are in small, isolated areas, but this one has gotten away from us. At the very least, we need to teach the African people that bush meat is not an appropriate food source. Stop eating bats and monkeys and start raising chickens and goats, people! It was short -- a political message to Israel.
-
Yeah, at this point I probably would. I've read that only 100 people travel to the U.S. daily from the hard-hit nations in Africa, so the impact would be minor. Travel to Cuba is essentially verboten for Americans, but plenty of them find ways around it, so the same would probably happen with travel to/from banned areas in Africa. We also banned travel to Israel this summer for what were essentially political reasons.

Exactly. Responsibility goes from the bottom up: You -> Local Government -> State Government -> Federal Government. There should be zero deaths from hurricanes in this country, as the public has days of advance notice. If you don't evacuate, don't expect anyone to help you for several days. They already do. And the CDC is considering adding health care workers who are on the watch list to the no fly list. Are the CDC and WHO considered to be part of the media? They've been offering some dire warnings and predictions. We are worried about it and there are flu vaccination pro
