  1. Well, I didn't want to mention any names, but...
  2. Is the General Political Thread the appropriate place to post this, or do we need to create a separate George Zimmerman thread? http://www.orlandosentinel.com/news/local/trayvon-martin/os-george-zimmerman-arrested-20131118,0,1837318.story If he needs a new lawyer, I think there are at least one or two people who posted in this thread before who have done an excellent job defending Georgie-boy in the past. Thank God this freaking clown is off the streets for the time being. Serial wife/girlfriend beater, murderer, all around thug. Floridians will sleep a little better tonight, I think.
  3. You should have it any day, then. I got mine last week and have been driving around listening to it. I was really not at all familiar with these guys beyond having heard the name. It's pretty good stuff, but not sure I want to listen to two full discs with bonus tracks, without maybe switching them out with someone else. Maybe I'll pull out some of my old Uncle Tupelo discs, or even the Coffee Creek show...
  4. What's the name of the band? There's nothing about it on his site. I'm a huge Neal fan, and would welcome a chance to see him with whoever he's touring with. I would love to see him perform some of the songs from his solo albums, but have never had the chance.
  5. Has anyone else gotten to the Family Dog release yet? The Pigpen tracks are actually kind of monotonous, but the whole thing does sound great. I love the first half of it, and the real revelation is Candyman. For some reason, the famous Harpur College version was aborted after about a minute and a half, but this is a full-length version from just a month earlier, and it's really, really good. I dig this release much more than any of the Dave's Picks series. Very worthwhile effort, and kudos to Mountain Girl for digging it out of her closet.
  6. Well, you're absolutely right: I did not understand what was happening. Based on the "apocalyptic" tone in the media, I sincerely believed that all these people complaining about being dropped had been dropped...just as I was by my car insurance company when I had Allstate. I wouldn't have put it past the insurance companies. They will send a cancellation notice at the drop of a hat, without warning and for no good reason. Nice way to treat customers. So, the people whose plans are being eliminated may have to get a different plan. Wow, that is just heartbreaking! I think my employer has swi
  7. The President lost his own mother to cancer, largely as a result of the typical denial of coverage that these faceless corporations love as their default. If he has a hard-on for them, it's surely no surprise. But if you think that those companies had no choice but to send out cancellation notices, you are kidding yourself. Every single one of those companies made a choice, and that was to drop people rather than simply informing them, "Your current policy will be considered substandard under the ACA; therefore, if you wish to continue to be insured by us, you will need to purchase additional
  8. I really can't wait to hear all these GOP a-holes go back to carping about the so-called "liberal media," when we have heard nothing for the past two weeks but Obama getting hammered about the ACA rollout problems, the website, and now his apology. I guess the media are liberal when they aren't all about espousing conservative values, but then when they bash a Democrat, they are being "objective" for a change. Disgusting. What truly blows my mind is the reaction to people being dropped by their insurance companies: rather than blame this despicable behavior by the companies, it goes straight
  9. Okay, here's a Dead-related live release I can get behind, and will be psyched to order and receive, even though it's "post-coma" Jerry. The only Jerry Garcia Band show I ever saw, 9/5/89, is being released on the 6-CD set Fall 1989: The Long Island Sound. Hmm, a 6-CD set for $35, sure beats a 3-CD set for $28! I loved the Weir/Wasserman set, too, so I'm looking forward to this (though I probably won't preorder from evil corporate overlords Wal-Mart. ) http://www.walmart.com/ip/32782065?adid=22222222227000000000&wl0&wl1=g&wl2=c&wl3=21486607510&wl4&wl5=pla&wl6=1988
  10. This is my experience too, so I have never bought any of them. Kinda like Led Zep, really overplayed in CT in the '70s and '80s. Now that I see that set list with so many classic tunes, I think, Wow, that would be a great show to see!
  11. I think he is using it during the Dub Room Special version. I actually like it better when he just sings it straight, but I like Frank's singing voice better than he did, I suspect. On Watermelon in Easter Hay etc.: I believe that when Frank died, the estate said those songs could not be played by anyone but Frank, and never would be played by anyone associated with his groups. I guess if you outlive your dad long enough, Mom will agree to let you do whatever you want.
  12. Nappy joined the following year at some point. There were two distinct '74 tours, both amazing. This has Ralph Humphrey on drums, and he is incredible on it too. The tracklist and personnel can be found here: http://globalia.net/donlope/fz/lyrics/Road_Tapes_Venue_2.html Edit: looks like Napoleon's first shows were February of 1974. George was still doing more lead vocals than him at that point. To date, this has not been a well-documented tour, something I hope they remedy in 2014, like they're doing in 2013 (with '73).
  13. As promised (threatened?), I am bumping this thread to talk about the "new" FZ release, Road Tapes, Venue #2. The ZFT have done a stunningly lousy job of marketing and distributing Zappa's works (Thanks, Gail!), but the Road Tapes idea is a real winner. Unbelievably, they announced the long-awaited Roxy DVD and an accompanying CD, Roxy by Proxy, then announced the second Road Tapes release - and got Road Tapes out to fans - while postponing/delaying the shipping date on Roxy three or four separate times. So, if you're having problems with something from Rhino, trust me, nobody can fuck it up
  14. I kind of agree with this, although I understand why ol' Shug is bummed out by my comments. It's almost like having someone tell you that new coat you bought looks ugly. You're like, Wow, this new release is great, and I come along and say, Nah, it sucks. Ironically, I am one who really tries to surround himself with positive people and be as positive as I can. I have to say, I was genuinely distressed to get these picks, knowing I had paid for all of them in advance. I wanted to love them. I awaited each one eagerly. I remember bitching about the last one, but then revising my review, sayi
  15. If they put out something really stellar, I would be the first to respond with some serious enthusiasm. They haven't. I paid $100 for four Dead shows, with high hopes of getting something I would love. Every release was a disappointment to me...even the bonus disc. Last night, I thought, "Well, I'll give this 1980 Scarlet>Fire another listen. Maybe I'll like it better." I could not get through the first 30 seconds. Switched to my iPod, looked for a random Scarlet>Fire from spring of '77. Picked 5/4/77 without even remembering it. And rocked out. It was so much better, with Phil's runs
  16. I think we have reached the golden nadir of mainstream pop.
  17. I have more than enough at this point. I may seek out some of these releases online - I have never felt guilty about "stealing" something that was widely available to every one in the world for over 25 years - but I will not likely buy another one unless I get a thorough preview of it first. Still not sure if I can unload these Dave's Picks on Amazon, but I will give it a shot. Most likely, I will at least get my money back.
  18. Well, maybe I should put in a disclaimer whenever I post in this thread: I have the entire Grateful Dead catalog, most of it on CD, along with about a hundred or two hundred shows on mp3 (acquired in the last ten or so years) and cassette tape (acquired between 1983 and 2000). Unlike many Deadheads, I love Europe '72. To me, those versions of Chinacat>Rider are "just exactly perfect." (Are my Deadhead bona fides showing yet?) I also love the versions of Bertha, Me & Bobby McGee and Wharf Rat on Skull & Roses. Those, to me, are the definitive versions. And I love the Feel Like A S
  19. I think it's a "different strokes" thing. Some Heads are really into the lysergic, incredibly tripped out jams that go on for 25 minutes, whereas I really haven't dug those since I stopped taking drugs. I don't care how well recorded they are. On the other hand, I will cut them slack on wrong notes, out of tune instruments and equipment problems (see 7/18/72, one of my favorite shows) if I dig the vibe of the performance and the overall song selection, etc. On the matrix issue: I thought I would love it, because there are many sterile sounding soundboards out there, but it didn't strike me t
  20. I am really pleased to see how happy people are with this new Dave's Pick, because that means they will keep selling out, which means more and more releases in the future. Very positive comments on here and, especially, on Dead.net. I wish I could honestly join in the enthusiastic chorus, but I can't. To my surprise, I have not been thrilled at all with the matrix. Maybe if I had an expensive audio set at home with an eq and all that, I could tinker with it to my heart's content. But I listen to music mostly on my work computer or home computer, and on my car stereo, either via iPod or CDs.
  21. Lou's last interview: http://www.rollingstone.com/music/videos/lou-reeds-last-words-watch-his-final-interview-20131108?utm_source=dailynewsletter&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=newsletter
  22. So I saw this and thought, in all good faith, Wow, 48,000, that's a lot of stories. I guess I was wrong. But, being one for due diligence, I started looking at what those stories are. Here is one of them: http://globalpublicsquare.blogs.cnn.com/2012/02/10/how-syria-differs-from-libya/?iref=allsearch Check the first line: "Amid growing outrage over civilian casualties in Syria, there are ever more urgent calls to aid - or at least protect - the uprising against President Bashar al-Assad." Right. That is a 2012 story about Syria. You get an A for effort, but not an A for anything els
  23. Oh, well, then I guess I was in a coma all those years. Frankly, it wasn't very enjoyable being an American from about 2000-2008. Good time to be in a coma. But in all seriousness, did you really see much coverage about Iraqi civilian casualties in the so-called "mainstream media?" I never did. In fact, I found most of my info by looking for things via Google, like the Iraqbodycount.org website. I still remember that the total American death toll was between 4,000-5,000, because it got so much coverage. I had to go back to the Iraqbodycount.org site just to refresh my memory and be reminded
