  6. What was the answer to this?

Spencer played MY drums in October of 1997 when my old band played at Lounge Axe. I remember he was a toddler, but I don’t know what age he was. He seemed like he knew what to do, but didn’t have the body control to execute it.

I don’t remember exactly what was said, but I do sort of recall Susie or Jeff mentioning that Spencer used to play the drums in Susie’s office at the Lounge Axe when he was extremely young. They both seemed to agree that that was probably the first time. I’m not sure how drums would fit in an office of a smallish concert venue, but that’s how I heard it.

Or it could be when he (with Jeff) used to come visit her at the Lounge Axe when she was in her office, he’d find his way to a drum set up on the stage. I haven’t gotten around to watching that one again.

  7. Thanks, U2Roolz, for the recaps!

The Tweedys have played many new-to-me songs, and so I've started a Spotify playlist with all of the covers. In case anyone else is interested, the playlist can be found here:

    https://open.spotify.com/playlist/1YVA5ge5ZAPP3wxnIvMfkK

You’re welcome! Thanks for making that cool Spotify playlist!

downisthenewup, yeah that was super cool that he attempted Message At Mid Bar! I feel like it was done around 2011 during the Winterlude. Edit: It was during the 2014 Winterlude.

  8. Thanks for the recap u2roolz. I think that was the best Tweedy Show yet. The one-two-three punch of Someday Some Morning Sometime -> One True Vine -> Wait Up was great. It's great seeing Jeff in a setting where he's comfortable playing his deepcuts.

I noticed he introduced One True Vine as a song he wrote for Mavis, but I remember when it was a Sky Blue Sky b-side!! Spencer coming in out of nowhere on drums for that was fantastic.

You’re welcome! I figured I’d make something that I’d really like to have to go through all of these amazing performances and moments. Yes, that was a killer 1-2-3!

I mentioned the same thing about One True Vine over at the FB group. I don’t think Jeff forgot that it was originally a b-side. Perhaps it was written for Mavis and she obviously didn’t record it until later.

I think I’m going to use the break Wed night to revisit a few of the episodes. It’s tough to narrow it down.

  11. These recaps are great because it can be really hard to remember which episode something occurred in. I have just a couple of additions/further comments.

Jeff talked again about TV Party, the Glenn O’Brien show that ran on public access TV in New York in the late 70s-early 80s, and which Jeff thinks of as the model for The Tweedy Show. It came up in connection with the idea of having viewers call in to the show. He said it often went badly when that happened. He also expressed concern about a “client” showing their junk.

The conversation with Jeff Garlin was pure gold. They went deep fast and it was clear that they’re truly close friends. There was great warmth between Jeff G. and the whole Tweedy family. (Personally, I’d love to see more of the Tweedy’s smart, engaging friends, like Jeff Garlin and Fred Armisen. I love the unscripted, spontaneous conversation.)

Jeff played “hot buttered popcorn” on guitar which seemed to please him greatly but got little attention.

Ah! TV Party! I didn’t catch the name of the Public Access TV show. Thank you!

And I wasn’t sure that he was actually playing Hot Butter’s Popcorn. It sounded different on an acoustic guitar.

  12. Can't say that I blame your mother. I saw some good shows there (REM in '90, Dylan/Petty, Lou Reed, Radiohead) but getting in and out of there was a pain.

Oh, I agree. That’s why I mentioned being upset that the traffic made me miss The National. I guess you could blame R.E.M. too. I got there in time for their other opener Modest Mouse. Maybe they should have had just one opener. The fact that it was a weekday show made it even more frustrating to get there for all 3 bands.

I remember angrily listening to the 1st 4 songs of the Radiohead show in 2003 on BCN, while I was stuck in traffic at the exit. I also was stuck in the parking lot until 3am when I saw Pearl Jam in 2008. This was around the time that they expanded the parking lot. We were parked way, way, way, back to the right side. At least when I saw Wilco there with Dylan in 2013, I had the option of leaving after Wilco played or catching most of Bob. Last show I saw there was Arcade Fire in 2013. I ran out during their encore and made good time. Not the best way to enjoy a concert, but I did breathe a sigh of relief when I saw that Wilco would be coming to the venue in the Boston harbor this summer and not Great Woods.

  13. My first R.E.M. show was on the fall leg of the Monster tour. It was the first ever concert at the new Boston Garden which was called the Fleet Center when it opened. I’m sure the people from the Boston area know that. I was upset that my mother wanted nothing to do with Great Woods when they played there 3 nights that summer of ‘95. I was 16 & had no license. I can’t remember when they announced the fall tour, but I remember being super excited that they played a new song on the MTV Music Awards.

Unfortunately, I only ever saw R.E.M. 6 times. 1995, 1999, 2003, 2004 (x2) and 2008 where I missed opener The National by being stuck in traffic on 495 headed to Great Woods. I actually saw Michael Stipe in 1999 at Giants Stadium as part of the NetAid concert that everyone seems to forget ever happened. He was singing next to Bono. I think it was that equally forgettable collaboration between Bono & Wyclef Jean: New Day. Best part of that night was the 1st ever performance of The Black Crowes w Jimmy Page.

  14. The Tweedy Show Sunday April 5 Episode 17

    # Superstition (Stevie Wonder song on the Tweedy’s jukebox)

    — Susie takes a poll to see if the show should start at 9 or 9:30 CST?

    Spiders (Kidsmoke)

    — Jeff to Susie “tell me some more about this guy that gave you notes”

    — Susie ponders if they should pick “a client” to talk to. They tried to talk to someone and they weren’t there.

    — Jeff Garlin joins in

    Reincarnation (Roger Miller cover)

    — Susie asks again if they should do 9 or 9:30. Look for a poll on her IG someday soon. Maybe tomorrow.

    — All The Young Dudes (Mott The Hoople) opening riff

You Are Not Alone (Mavis Staples cover)

Ripple (The Grateful Dead cover - funny singing by Jeff aborted after a few lines. It sounded like he was trying to sing it like a cowboy)

    Ripple (sung by Sammy)

Very chatty show tonight with 2 separate call ins.

PLUS, they might shift the show to 9pm CST, so if you’ve been watching it live make sure to check in to see if they changed the time. And it’d be really cool if they chatted with some “clients”.

  15. Today is R.E,M,’s 40th anniversary!

Excellent! Did you see the email from R.E.M. HQ with the pics from their first show? I think it was sent on Friday. Loving the Stipe impressions from Jeff. Would love to hear him do a cover of something.

I Love You (Billie Eilish cover/you could hear Susie crying)

Susie read my comment “fecal aerosol was my favorite exhibit at Mass MoCa”. She chuckled a bit and Jeff gave a lil smirk. I came up with the comment as an inside joke referring to the farting going on at Joe’s Field, but Jeff’s the one that brought up aerosolized feces from an article that he read about possibly transmitting the virus that way. Susie corrected him and said to call it fecal aerosol.

Save It For Me (w Spencer & Sammy)

  18. Great idea on the Monday reminder about the initial Solid Sound announcement. Seems like yesterday that he announced that from the stage in Boston; I believe that night's show was simulcasted. At least I think I remember hearing Jeff announce it, even though I was not there in person.

Those "Evening With" shows were epic. Loved the mid-show acoustic set, when they brought out the lamps, etc.

Yes, you’re right. That show in Boston was webcast along with the next night in Concord, NH. I was at both shows, so I never had a memory of being home for the webcast. I was so excited that both shows would be available in excellent quality. Actually, I sat behind Grace Potter & her band at the Concord show. And I also sat next to tinnitus (Tim).

  19. Sue mentioned my comment last night about “Jeff can wear whatever he wants!”. Haha. I’m loving that he’s wearing the same bathrobe almost every night. I also asked for the Michael Stipe impression a few nights in a row & I think Sue mentioned the Stipe impression after she read a comment asking for an R.E.M. cover. And I brought up that they speak Yiddish on HBO’s The Plot Against America which Susie mentioned because she was talking about how they speak Yiddish on the show Unorthodox. Jeff knew right away that it was a Philip Roth book.

I was thinking it’d be nice if we reminded Jeff on Monday the 6th that it’s the 10th anniversary of the first announcement of Solid Sound which was made on stage at the Boston Orpheum. Those lengthy “An Evening With” boots are coming in handy right about now. Can’t believe it’s been 10 years already.
