  1. There's been talk of this being Wilco's last album. Discuss.

I'm pretty sure English is not this poster's native language. I believe he meant to say that Sky Blue Sky is an album that will last. :worship

I agree. Probably beyond our lifetimes. Good call, joshsirjoshules! :thumbup

  2. If it's not too late to add my little recommendations...

I like to suggest Clem Snide and Eef Barzelay (of Clem Snide) every chance I get and it's right up your alley judging by your post.

Check out Eef Barzelay's "Ballad of Bitter Honey." It's absolutely awesome. He's got the best voice and the lyrics are clever and interesting (great for just skimming the surface of but they can go deep if you decide you want them to.) Just really awesome gentle but powerful stuff. And he's adorable, so that never hurts. :wub At one point his song (via his group, Clem Snide) "Moment in the Sun" was the theme for the tv show, "Ed."

I too love Eef. Amaranthine, I can send you some Clem Snide if you like.

Llynn, I wish we had gotten to meet at that infamous Springfield show. We seem to share similar tastes, as I've noticed from some of your other posts. Do you like Mountain Goats? Admittedly his voice isn't for everyone, but I love his lyrics, and I'm hooked on "Get Lonely".

  3. So my 20-yr-old, Tom, has been working like a dog at both a job and a grueling academic schedule, with a neuroscience major. His classes this quarter were psychology, statistics, Biology, and Organic Chemistry. The Bio has a separate 3-hr. lab each week, and the Chem has a separate 4-hr. lab each week. Between these classes and his job, Tom has spent the quarter (UC's are on the quarter system....moves fast! :stunned ) pretty stressed and always somewhat sleep deprived. Poor kiddo.

Anyway, finals were this week, and although he had pulled some very respectable midterm grades, he was still really worried and didn't feel he'd studied enough, and spent last week cramming and falling asleep, exhausted, over his books and notes. Organic Chemistry was the class he was most concerned about, as well as the Biology. He studied until he needed to prop his eyelids open with toothpicks. He couldn't sit down without falling asleep! Thank God, his last final was today. I'm sure he'll sleep like the dead tonight. :sleep

He feels ok about his finals....the Bio and Psych haven't posted grades yet, but he got an A in Statistics. Yesterday he got the excellent news that he had done well on his Chem final, and had an A in that class also.

But it took tonight's news to bring him to his current state of giddy, still sleep-deprived, happy stunned-ness. He was bored and poking around on the computer, and noticed a message in his webmail he hadn't expected, from his Chem professor. Here's what it said:

    Tom

You did extremely well and ended up with one the very best score of the class.

Every year I offer to 2 or 3 of the best students to join my research group to do undergraduate research, and so far most of them have been highly successful. If you wish to do so, just contact me.

    Good luck for your future

    Best

:dance :w00t :cheers :hug :love :banana :bounce8 ok that's enough outta me.

Tom hasn't stopped glowing and grinning all night. I should add that this was a class of over 400 students, so he really outdid himself. The prof is no slouch, either....he's a very highly regarded Frenchman whose credentials read:

    "Membre de l'Institut de France

UCR-CNRS Joint Research Chemistry Laboratory (UMR 2957)

    Department of Chemistry

    University of California"

All around, very, very cool. Tom's worried that he may not be able to fit research in, around next quarter's classes and work, but he's definitely going to pursue this if at all possible. And what an ego boost, to even be asked!

Did I mention that studies show that male children get their brains from their mothers? :brow B)

This at least accounts for where some of mine have gone. :yes

  4. I'm still trying to figure out what summerteeth means.

OOH! OOH! I know this one!!! :thumbup It's from some joke Jeff & Jay used to banter back & forth about, "Some are teeth and some ain't"......which evolved into "Summerteeth".

    What do I win??? :hyper

Somebody probably knows the story a bit better than my version...

  5. I guess a recording of this isn't going to pop up?

Oh yes it is......it's being patiently and painstakingly labored over to produce perfection. You will love it when it emerges. A great recording was gotten, by folks who know what they're doing! :worship

  6. Oh, and for the sake of attempting to remain on topic, I made the most delicious big vat of Irish Beef Stew last night, with fabulous broth and the beef simmered until it melted in your mouth, it was so tender. I doubled the recipe....with growing children in the house, it's necessary! :lol But now there's a goodly amount of leftovers, so perhaps I can skip cooking tonight. Yippee!

  7. Cooper would probably call Western Missouri. He's kind of the yard sherriff, and consequently rather intolerant of aberrant behavior.

Frankly, I think that's what should be done with chidren that play Marco Polo at the pool.

    Are you coming to visit?

The only legitimate use of "Marco Polo" is locating your wayward children in big stores. Works great for us. B)

  8. While not a Wilco fan from day one, the first Mermaid Ave. album found me wishing I had been. I would never claim any expertise in knowing the minds of the Wilco members, but here is my take on the new album. SBS seems to me as grown from Tweedy's extensive solo touring. Wilco albums have always been colaborative efforts when it comes to the final product, but this seems very much a labor for jeff to expres himself through the band in a new way. He keeps it simple, which does allow the other band members to express themselves through his music. This being the first studio album with nels, I think that it fits perfectly in the lineage behind kicking television and what is to come on, what now very pleasently looks to be, the long road Wilco has to ride with the current line up. Jeff was more productive over the last two plus years than ever before- AGIB and tour, Loose Fur, Golden Smog, Kicking Television, solo tours, dates with Wilco, and now SBS. Loving all the side projects and stoked to see Jeff spread his wings and show off his prolific place in the contemporary music scene its nice to think that the next two years will be decidely all about Wilco. SBS is Jeff at the end of a solo show singing without the PA, the audience intent and quite, beautiful. It won't take Wilco long to find the more upbeat passion that is a part of their soulful repertoire. Not claiming the powers of Kreskin, I predict a lengthy tour backed up by another album relatively quickly. The end is nowhere in sight, enjoy the mellow tunes, bask in the glory of a band that knows its time and place, and has produced an album that captures this perfectly.

Welcome to VC, humbum. Nice first post! :thumbup

  9. Tonight I was lazy, ordered pizza.

Tomorrow I am cooking for a pair of female co-workers (as I have done the last two weeks), current plan: Avacado/Cucumber/Sprout salad, Steamed Asparagus, Chicken in Peanut Sauce, Lightly fried Potatoes and Mushrooms, and Crab Cakes.

Mixed drinks to accompany, to be decided tomorrow.

Should be delicious if I don't mess it up.

You must, I repeat must, share the recipes for this. Oh my it sounds wonderful. Actually I guess it's all more or less self-explanatory, except would you detail the chicken instructions, and the potatoes & mushrooms, if there's any specifics we should know?

    :dribble :dribble :dribble

I'm going to short out this computer if I don't stop reading this thread.

  10. Good show. You shoulda heard "Pigs that ran straightaway into the water" It kicked asses and donkeys both. People were left sockless and shoeless. John & Peter were fabulous and melodious and hilarious and several other "ous" words. :worship The pretty and mellow and sometimes heartbreaking songs from "Get Lonely" were more powerful than I can describe which is why I won't. Oh and drummer Jon Wurster (Superchunk) was deliriously dynamic. There were no photos because cameras were barred from the proceedings although if pressed I might be able to provide you with several bad line drawings that approximate the scene.

I got autographs and a very warm handshake from John D. and only stammered a few inane comments before drooling a bit on myself in abject adulation. I think John D. got away unscathed. I have had the line, "I come from Chino, so all your threats are empty" bouncing & ricocheting around in my head ever since the show. But as I pointed out to John D., I come from Riverside, and Chino doesn't actually seem so awful, from my perspective. In high school, we used to hit the infamous "Chino Auction"....a big outdoor mart....every September to buy school clothes. It was both fun and strange, but they had some nice stuff. Reasonable prices, too. :thumbup

Is that enough review for you, Evonne? My typing finger is getting sore. :huh Did I tell you about our big, boisterous singalong finale of Thin Lizzy's "The Boys are Back in Town"? Pure goofy loud fun, with the girls from the opening act, Pony Up, joining in. They were pretty good too.

Damn your virus, you shoulda been there. Are you well or do I need to put chicken soup in the mail? :brow

PS - The only thing I can fault in this astonishing show might be the serious dearth of pudding, but there was Guinness at least. :beer

  11. Donna, those pictures are fabulous -- really conjures up the night again!

Oh, and thanks for the VC Staff photos -- there should be an official link to it or something :P

We were all appointed based on our excellent good looks. :yes

    Edit: In dim candlelight anyway

  12. devilled eggs! bundt cake!! wotta night! so sorry to have missed the soiree at edie and scott's.

and after reading all this, you guys can look for me in ft. wayne, too. :dancing :pirate

wendy, donna was this the first time that you've met face to face?! WOO!

It was, and it was a totally WOOO experience!!! :cheers :D :wub :dance :banana :bounce8

See you both in Ft. Wayne! :w00t :hyper :party Ok, that's probably about my limit on the smilies....

Psst, Evonne, Edie's husband Scott makes the most fabulous deviled eggs....a recipe he has promised to divulge!...and that chocolate-chocolate chip bundt cake of Morgan's is wickedly good. There were the best kalamata olives too....I may not have let anyone else have any, though....I sort of guarded the dish for much of the party..... :blush
