  1. 20221001_192213.jpgGot to see Kevin Morby's magnificent show tonight (well, last night now) in L.A. at the Belasco.

It was one for the ages! Started off with the new album and then got songs off every one of his solo albums, just the greatest setlist. I'll try to get the list. Kevin looked great in his fringed gold jacket and gold glitter flecks scattered across his cheekbones...with the way he leaps around, the jacket fringe was flying and the glitter lit under the stagelights like sparks.

His band, the Photographs, is so in tune with each other (literally and figuratively) that they swoop and dive through the songs like a murmuration of starlings. What a capable & talented crew! Wilco fans would recognize longtime Tweedy Band member Liam Kazar playing bass. One guest band member brought waves of nostalgia...guitarist Meg Duffy, who was in Kevin's band when they played SSF in 2017, and did a set of her own at last May's SSF. The interplay between Meg, Cyrus, and Kevin was a joy to watch. They were having SO much fun with "City Music"!

Meg and Kevin even reprised their piggyback guitarist trick! :rock:lol

I didn't take many pictures because I really just wanted to soak up the music tonight, but I'll add a couple.

Also attending the show tonight was SSF alumnus Courtney Barnett. She had a great time, from all appearances. ❤️

  2. In my many years at Via, I have yet to manage to post in time for a "Live! Tonight!" Clearly, I am too slow for this process. :P

But anyway I got to see Kevin Morby (ssf alumnus) perform in the tiny 200-seat Clive Davis Theatre at the Grammy Museum night before last, and it was one of those transcendent evenings where every detail was perfect.

it began with a Q and A between Kevin and Tim Heidecker that was as endearing and funny and deeply introspective as any fan could hope for, followed by an intense, passionate set in the tiny, close theatre that left my brain melted for hours. I didn't manage to sleep until 7 a.m. Damn. I couldn't wind down!

I'm salivating for Kevin's show at the Belasco on Saturday. The Grammy show reminded me how good he is at drawing an audience into his world. It's an incredible place, too.

Expect me to be useless on Sunday. I'll be recuperating.

Pavement, if they were a simile to an apex predator re: bands, would be a ravenous great shark who can sprint on land.

no band can touch them right now.

Thanks Tim, just rub it in! :lol

Pavement last night in Boston.  Great show featuring some nice extended versions of old favorites- Malkmus has really honed his guitar skills

All these reports are making me kick myself for missing them in L.A. but I was trying to mind my budget...:(

    Also, I love your avatar.:lol

  5. Hurricane Ian is getting quite the build-up. It sounds as if it could be massive in terms of wind, storm surge, and heavy rainfall. If some of you are there, I hope you can either evacuate or batten down the hatches, hard. MSahno? You be safe!

I hope the storm turns out to be a dud, totally overblown...best to everyone in its path.

Ti West’s “Pearl" exists in the same universe as March’s “X,” but provides a wildly different experience. This time around, the horror is built by re-shuffling colorful parts taken from Douglas Sirk, Busby Berkeley, “The Wizard of Oz,” and more. It also gives Mia Goth a ripe opportunity to expand an original character from “X” through a show-stopping performance that, if it existed in any other genre, might generate some awards buzz.

    That's one intense trailer! Wow.

Do yourself a favor: See it in a theater and go in as cold as possible. I'll just say that it applies some impeccable satirical logic, skillfully maintains its suspense and pace throughout, gleefully embraces its wildest ideas, and deploys tonal shifts to hugely entertaining effect.

    Intrigued.

    Roadie’s? setlist from kidsmoke!
what the helll has got into Wilco?!? I’ve never heard them rock extended guitar solos like that! Pat was ON FIRE!!! Nels and him channeling Duane Allman and Dickie Betts with the fiery dual leads, the unison licks and the huge long crescendos . Holy shit Batman! What a great show!

Stan the Man gave me this setlist...Wilco's sweet and insanely capable sound man. The 7th Wilco. :thumbup

Donna what % of shows you are at do they play Spiders? Do they play it when they know you are there? I wanna go to more shows you are at !!😆

Oh, I wish I had the power to influence their setlists!!! Although I did comment several times to my husband last night, "They're playing this for me!" :lol Starting with Handshake Drugs was perfect...when that song was new, I was so addicted to it that I had an entire cd that was just HD over and over because I couldn't get enough of that rhythm. It's odd now to listen to that because it seems far too slow. I've gotten used to the faster live version. Last night it sounded sublime.

Via Chicago is "mine", too. I'll always feel like that's a little nod to us at these forums.:wub

And then as the main set is wrapping up, to hear the beat and skronky notes that signalled Spiders had me muttering happily, "Oh, no way!" Just perfection. The only way it could've been improved (Take note, Jeff!) is if Jeff had led us in singing the guitar part. I was really up for singing the guitar part so I sang it to myself anyway. But it would have been better if we'd all howled it like wolves on a full moon...

BA DA DA DAH DA DA DAH DA DA!!!:rock

Also of note, how exquisite was Muzzle of Bees? Nels was making some gorgeous, swirly sounds that I'd never heard before that elevated an already beautiful song to a whole other level!

PS to Jeff...On the entirely off chance that you DID play Spiders specifically for me, I again request a lyric change in that verse about my rash. As I've patiently explained, that rash cleared up years ago with a bit of ointment, and I feel it is inappropriate to keep reminding everyone. TY.

    :flirt:spider2

  10. Yeah, at the memorably named "Cal Coast Credit Union Open Air Theatre at SDSU"!

If the students haven't got a nickname yet for this place, they need to get right on that!

Anyway, I'll be there and I'd love to meet up with any VCers in attendance. My seat isn't terrific...in Section B, row J, #22...but I don't even care. I get Wilco and this joy is enough!:party:wub

I just checked...the last time I saw Wilco at Cal Coast CU Open Air Theatre was August 27, 2007. Susie and the kids (Sammy, 7 and Spencer, 11) were in the row just ahead of us with Uncle Danny.

It's a nice venue. I have warm, fuzzy memories of Jeff pointing Susie out as he intro'd & dedicated ITMWLY. And as he chided her to clap along, her muttering cheerfully, "Oh I'm not clapping along.":lol

She was busy; Sammy had fallen asleep in her lap.

I'm the last person that should be writing this because I'm a shitty writer and I didn't keep a setlist during the show, so I'll just regurgitate the list as I recall it and hope others will fill in the blanks. If you've never been there, the Santa Fe Opera is a beautiful open-air venue that is more accustomed to black ties and Rossini than rock shows, but with the 12,000' Sangre de Cristo Mountains forming the eastern sklyine and with Jemez wilderness and badlands to the west the views are spectacular especially with the late summer sunset and all of the wildflowers in bloom what a night for a Wilco show! To the music, I don't know if it's because I haven't seen the band since SS19, or because a buddy got us front-row center seats (unflippin' believable!), but damn the boys got out there and rocked the freakin' house down!  I have to say after seeing the band around 30 times, this show was far away one of the most mind-blowing I can recall. From the moment they opened with Hankshake Drugs to the last beat of I've Got You (at the end of the century) the whole crowd was their feet for the entirety of the show, now I've seen Wilco here 2 or maybe 3 other times and that's never happened, Santa Fe crowds can be a little stodgy. I've never seen Wilco play extended jams in so many songs, they almost seemed like a different band. And Pat! Holy shit! that guy was having the time of his life out there, the energy was overflowing.  There was banter here and there over the course of the night but I'll be damned if I can remember it, I was on such heavy music high that nothing else mattered.  I just wish Paul from Chicago (I'm Paul from NM) was there to provide his beloved commentary, it would certainly help me remember the night better.  For the encore they brought out Terry Allen, who is local, that was a really special edition to the show.  It was funny, during the second song he played and sang (don't know the songs title) he got into an extended keyboard jam and was really rocking, and I saw Jeff nodding to Pat to cut in with his guitar solo, Pay obliged but not for another couple of minute while Terry jammed out, great fun.

It was a very similar set list to Red Rocks the night before, without the following songs: At least that's what You Said, Heavy Metal Drummer, I'm the Man Who loves You, no U.S. Blues either.  They did play I'm Always in Love.  I hope some else can fill out the songs.  Thanks.

Well, Paul from NM, I'd have to disagree with you being a "shitty writer". I see Wilco tomorrow night in San Diego, and your write-up has me all amped up for the show! From all accounts lately, they continue to be America's greatest live band!:banana:rock:guitar

  12. I have gotten turned on to so much great music through the members of VC over the years!

I have some listening to do! It's great to see all the female talent busting out.

I see Plains on Oct. 28th, and the setting couldn't be cooler...Pappy & Harriet's Pioneertown Palace! I love it up there in the high desert among the joshua trees and under a skyful of stars!

  13. I'm not asking what old band, new to you, you've discovered...Pavement, The Cure...

Not that that isn't great!! It is!

But, have you fallen for any brand-new bands? Musicians who have just recently thrown their lots together, and are valiantly trying to make a go of it? Sometimes there's SO much talent packed in! These are the bands I can't help but support!

Right now the one I'm pulling for is Plains,

a blend of the talents of Katie Crutchfield of Waxahatchee and the songstress Jess Williamson. The 2 songs released so far from their debut have been humming in my veins since I heard them..."Problem With It" and "Abilene"...both very strong songs for gorgeous voices. Highly recommended!

Ok, now tell me what you've got? Who is new and deserves attention, on your radar?

Let's do right by our musicians out there!❤️

I was going to see Placebo next week but had got less enthusiastic about it after I heard a tape from earlier in the tour. They're not doing a lot of the songs I like anymore. Tried to sell the tickets, no takers. Then I got an email today saying the tour was postponed. I'm taking the refund & parlaying that into a ticket for Nine Inch Nails in Portland on Wednesday. Way more into that. Got a nice hotel with pool & hot tub for way reasonable money 3 miles from the venue. The only bad thing is the drive (2.5 hours each way) is going to hurt me bad. I'll deal with that as it looks like things are going to be worse in that department soon. Except for a hospital stay this will be the first time out of the house since before COVID. About time! NIN are 1 of my all time faves so I'm pretty excited.

Chuck, allow yourself lots of extra time for the drive, and pull off and rest if you need to. And have a blast! Music heals.

  15. Hi all, how are we holding up out there in this climate changed world? I'm in southern California where it's Day 6 of some miserably toasty weather. Today was 108 F. Thank God for a/c but the need is so great that there's risk of the power grid failing.

Even worse are the massive fires popping up with regularity. I pity the firefighters dealing with these in their heavy gear, risking heat exhaustion. It's ugly all around.

We water our garden plants early so they'll have a chance, but it's pretty hopeless. They are just baking out there. My red beans are nearly cooked when I pick them! We've taken to trying to shade what we can. All our cheap umbrellas are out in the garden. Here's one of my poor tomatoes.

How are the rest of you, and where are you located?
