boxer will almost certainly be in my top 5 of the year. i get to see the national on tuesday, capping an insanely awesome long weekend of shows: okkervil river, monolith, the arcade fire/lcd soundsystem, the national!

i have always been a fan of bands that i love making a buck, but this wal-mart business is a bit disappointing. but whatever. THAT, though. that shit is fucking hilarious. go ben.

seeing them tonight, really excited!

indeed. i can't wait to see them again at the end of next month. saw them in april at a 200-capacity club, this time they're playing a 700-capacity venue. not too shabby.

my wii bowling arm is sore today. i bowled a record 205 last night just to have my sister, in the very next game, throw 7 strikes in a row and end up with a 247 score. bitch.

^^no doubt about that!

...because I'm watching him on Comedy Central right now: Demetri Martin is a genius. Please discuss. "I like the game rock paper scissors but 2/3rds. Like - Rock beats Scissors. Oh man, these scissors are all bent, I can't cut with them, you win. Or - Scissors beats Paper. This paper is cut into strips, it's useless, I can't write on it, you win. Then, Paper beats Rock... Rock is fine! There is no structural damage to rock. Rock can break through paper whenever it wants. Paper sucks. It should be Rock, Explosives with a cuttable wick, Scissors."

ok, honestly, it's baffled me too, with all the comparisons I've ever seen. I've only witnessed MMJ live once, and was bored to tears. I will admit that I haven't given their studio stuff a whole lot of chances, but I have It Still Moves and the live one, and I just... don't... care. And I still like detlef schrempf... and I don't like bad ironic country songs from the 80's... there's just something about Ben Bridwell that I love, I can't put my finger on it. I was worried about the loss of Mat Brooke as well but the impact to me doesn't seem too consequential. I guess we'll see

So, I've listened to the album 5 times today... And I will admit to being completely biased as I am totally in love with this band, but I am really digging Cease To Begin. The only song I find to be remotely boring is General Specific. Highlights for me are Is There A Ghost (when that guitar kicks in at about the minute mark...), No One's Gonna Love You (probably the track that sounds the MOST like EATT), Detlef Schrempf (the harmonizing), Lamb On The Lam ( ), Window Blue (just a beautiful track - steel guitar and banjo, aaahhh...). It doesn't seem to be quite as reverb-heavy as EATT,

i'll be at the show tomorrow, but will be grassin' it up at red rocks on sunday... i don't much care for the fillmore... the sound is usually good but the last few times i've been the crowd has been less than desirable. also it's really tough for shorty to get a good view of the stage. someone at last.fm once suggested the fillmore create a "short people section" - i'm behind that idea 100%.

the cover is gorgeous.
