  1. ""In true Deadhead spirit, the film preserves an event that seem awfully remote in today's world of cable TV, Internet ticketing, and heavily policed gatherings. Early in the movie, an eager crew can be seen building a simple wooden stage. No cops, no security force trolling the grounds. No bags being searched,

no one ejected for cigarette smoking. What one witnesses as the movie gets underway is 30,000 folks raving about in a big, sunny meadow while the local band plays on a hastily erected platform. Two flinty piles of amplifiers broadcast loud rock 'n roll out to the countryside. Amidst such casual planning, it seems forgivable that the festival's organizers forgot to incorporate stage lights. Providentially, this lack of concert lighting works to stunning effect later in the film. As the sun sets, and a cool breeze settles on the day's revelry, Garcia can be faintly seen crooning the plaintive "Sing Me Back Home," a mere silhouette of dark hair and beard against the gathering dusk.

Such a pastoral scene, of dogs and babies and children eating ice cream, hearkens back to a bygone era. 'Sunshine Daydream' never lectures, though, never complains that such days have passed""

I have a friend who says that every thing was better in the 70s. This film is a strong piece of evidence that would back up his case......

  2. Jeeeez just finished listening to the 8-27-72 Playin' In The Band....that might be the best version ever of that song. 18 minutes of pure lysergic dripping intensity. Anyone think they will ever officially release the Sunshine Daydream movie of that show? I know it circulates in various forms but I'd like to see Norman get his hands on it and clean it up a bit.

The sight of that naked guy on the pole behind the stage always cracks me up.

  3. Someone on this thread mentioned Willie Nelson's "Pretty Paper".....its an album that he put out in 1979 and covers all the x-mas classics........as someone who cant stand x-mas music in general and especially the 'classics'.....this album is good, very good....not sure if its still in circulation (I bought the vinyl version for a quarter years ago) but if it is, get it!

  4. Should we be more trustworthy then?

They have a live band in there? Cover?

Carols is a great place, used to take my wife dancing there years ago. Not sure if Sidewinder is still playing there, hopefully so. You could name about ANY country tune and they'd play it. No reason to be leery......the place has real people in there, not just yups and hipsters. One of the bartenders has the most amazing Kentucky mudflap...that, coupled with his polyester truckers hat....quite a sight.

Did I hear Lake View Lounge closed?!? Damn, that hurts....hurts bad.

  5. Ok, go ahead..........but dont say I didnt warn you! ;-)

I actually liked DP. The whole film is kind of understated until you get to the first car crash scene and then it just rocks.

I ended up fastforwarding thru the endless blather to the kill scenes, which are indeed inventive.

  6. Do not, I repeat, DO NOT waste a moment of your time watching "Death Proof".

    Trust me on this.

He started out strong with RD, its been downhill since........I've been accused of being a QT hater but I'm actually just disappointed in him. He's gotta stop jacking off (read: paying homage to genres and films he worships) and start doing something worthy.

  7. Truth be told........the addition of Nels has pushed me back into the most casual of fans category. The glory years of the post-Bennet, pre-Nels era is still what gets me hot and bothered. IMHO, what Jeff and the boys did with the use of space and tension during those years along with Jeffs raggedy guitar was just exactly perfect. Now its all washed over by Nels.............

  8. I caught them last spring a few shows into their live reformation and enjoyed it. They maybe lost a little step here and there but Curt and Cris can still play very well. Well worth catching live still. The album is tepid, at best though.

PaulB: here's a link to a site that Bostrom links to from his site (i may have sent this your way a year or so ago...?) but it's got a few recent shows on their to listen to/download, as well as some spectacular MPs in their prime:

    http://www.wohlers.org/puppets/

heh........I believe it was you who burned about 8 shows for me off that site a year or two ago. Thanks again, brutha!!

  9. Glad to hear that they rocked some socks off in Chicago.

I didn't think their Ann Arbor show was that great, but it was really late on a Tuesday night, way too loud, and I was already exhausted after seeing Springsteen the night before, so maybe I just wasn't in the mood. It was still a show I'm glad I saw -- those guys were a big part of my college years.

I just CAN NOT resist that blend of punk/country/psychedelic/absurdist music the Pups put together. Outside of Garcia and the boys in their prime, the MPs are the only band that cause a smile to stretch ear to ear across my face.

  10. Hey now everybody!

I know its been a long time sinced I rapped at ya but I've been real busy (actually my work blocked access to this site until recently).

A real quick headzup......I caught the Meat Puppets at the Double Door last Thursday nite. I wasnt sure what to expect given that their new album is kinda mediocre and the last time I saw them in 94 at the Vic they werent on top of their game (IIRC, they even had a 2nd guitarist on stage). Anyhow, my fears were laid to rest shortly after they came on stage. Curt and Chris are back and taking no prisoners! The show I saw on the 8th was one of, if not the best, shows I've seen them do. They are finishing up a Fall tour now, if you get a chance, go see 'em!

Btw, my pal taped the show, its on Dime now.

    Ok, rap at ya later!
