  1. Go see Wilco coverbands, they play all the tunes!

I'm starting a Wilco cover band. We're gonna play tunes just from their most majestic, golden era.....2001-2003. In fact, we're gonna cover entire shows note for note from that era ala DSO. Now that I have the model worked out, I need a name for the band......Will and the Tweedy Birds.....nah, too hokey..........c'mon brain, start thinking............Ocliw? Nah, damn dyslexia acting up again......

Lets not forget that Bobby also wrote "The Other One", one of the best tunes in the GD canon, IMO.

I'm gonna see Bobby this Friday at the Riv, I'll pass along everyone's well wishes.

    The Riviera, Chicago, Friday 10/20/06

Good show, the best I've seen Bobby put on since 2001. He had some

energy behind him which I felt was lacking the last few times I saw

him. I was paying attention to the drummer a bit. The few moments where

the music slowed up was all on the drummers shoulders. He was just

plodding along, basically offering a rudimentary beat with no fills or

flourishes. Bobby really has to let that guy go. Outside of that, they

were tight, Bobby seemed to be in good shape, they had some pretty good

jams (except the Playin' jam that went NOWHERE), the crowd was in high

spirits although there were a few morons around. I was standing back by

the tapers so I happened to notice when someone knocked over a tapers

mike stand and then did nothing to make it right. Instead, they hung

around that taper and boxed the poor guy in, pressing closer and closer

to him during the first set. Taper guy was not happy.

An observation: Security was very concerned with smoking. They were

actively pointing out, with laser pointers, folks in the crowd smoking.

Then a security guy would go down and politely tell smokers to stop

smoking. Those smoking other than tobacco were left alone. Weird, huh?

I wish Jeff gave that guy a good, solid donkeypunch.

And all those working security............they deserve to never be employed as "security" again.

do you know what a donkeypunch is? :lol

When I posted that, I thought it was a solid blow to the jewels.........then I looked it up on Wiki and found otherwise. Ah well....you get my drift, right?

  4. Is'nt that "Rollin and Tumblin" by Muddy Waters?

Or was it "Divin Duck Blues" by Taj Mahal? :stunned

Not sure........its on a comp album of country greats that I have..........twas just a lame attempt of mine at humor.

  5. I'm not a gambling man but if I had to bet on whether my home has a spirit in it or not, I'd bet yes. Before moving into my current home 1.5 years ago, I didnt believe in the paranormal at all. But after hearing a series of unexplained noises.........and then having my wife verify that she too has heard thumps, bumps and dragging noises......my opinion has changed. Example-My place is a split level ranch, built in the mid 70s. The living room is underneath the master bedroom. My wife and I are watching the boobtube in the living room, kids are asleep.....we start hearing odd noises coming from the southeast corner of the ceiling-bumps and thumps, then a loud thump. We look at each other like WTF? No one is upstairs, there are no heating ducts in that area........I go upstairs to look around the bedroom.........all is normal, no more noises. This has happened a few times

Oh yeah, one more thing. Shortly after moving in, I went into our attached garage for something. At the time, the lights didnt work in there. As I walked in, I heard a noise that instantly gave me the chills and honestly, scared the crap out of me. I wouldnt be able to accurately describe what I heard-all I can say is it was a sort of voice, nothing like anything I've ever heard before. I havent told my wife about that and it hasnt happened again.

The good thing is that we dont sense any sort of presence or have seen anything weird. Odd noises I can live with.

I want to ask my neighbors if anything odd or horrible has happened in the house-both neighbors are original owners so they would most likely know-but I'm not sure I really want to know.

  6. Just so's ya know................Tower Records was purchased over the weekend and is being liquidated. Everything must go. 10% discount on CDs right now. I'm assuming that as stock gets stale, the discount will rise.

I picked up a live Taj Mahal disc and the Kinks hillbillys disc at the Wabash store. Plenty of stuff left.

  7. some good discs listed here, and at least the 80's gave me REM, but I already have as many 21st century discs as 80's, and definitely way more 70's and 90's

    probably equally as many 60's . . .

Ya know, I dont think I have any discs from this decade. I think I gotta stop collecting vinyl, boots and field recordings and get with the times.

  8. No 80s list would be complete with such great bands as the Thompson Twins, Haircut 100 and Bananarama.

    Ok, I'm just kidding.

    No, really, I am.

Hold on, I just thought of one.......the debut album by The Sugarcubes....that one was pretty interesting if you can ignore the male singer....Bjork is pretty damn weird though, which is good.

  9. Jeff, Sue and kids-

Sorry for your loss. In tough moments like this, it's best to fall into the arms of those that love you the most for support and guidance. Give your kids a big hug, I know they need it too.

  10. [Stranger in a Strange Land, Robert Heinlein

I forgot about that one. My girlfriend (now wife) and I read that book out loud to each other as we rambled about the West one fine summer years ago.

  11. "Confederacy of Dunces"-gol'durn funniest book I've ever read.

"Pearls Before Swine or God Bless You Mr. Rosewater"

    "Sirens of Titan"

    "Sometimes a Great Notion"

I finished "Desert Solitaire" by Edward Abbey recently. I'm sure I'll be reading that one again in a few years.

  12. Yeah, that's really sayin' something! And to think I thought Reagan was the AntiChrist.

I vividly remember watching the Inauguration in Jan '01 & being just profoundly depressed (esp. after that Election fiasco).I looked at my wife & said 'this is going to be the worst 4 years this country has seen in our lifetime'.Jesus,I thought it would be bad but never EVER in my worst nightmare would I have thought it would be this bad..it's just so beyond the pale it's almost hard to believe even though we watch the news every day.

Dang! I could have written that too. Are you sure you're not me?

  13. Me too.'89 really began the last great GD era which lasted until '91 or so.I saw ALOT of shows those 2+years.After that (for reasons we don't have to go into) it got to be so depressing that I gave up 'touring' for the most part.

Sadly,I never appreciated Brent fully until he left us :ohwell

Wow............I could have written that......good times, eh?

  14. I always like Bleach more than Nevermind.

Pearl Jam? Never bought into 'em.

And, in general, I liked Mudhoney more than Nirvana. "Touch me I'm sick"--ah, good stuff.

The grunge era of 89-94 was a great time of my life. I was slackin' with the best of 'em-definitely doing my best to avoid a tie and any sort of responsibility......I recall Nevermind as breathing a breath of fresh air and energy to a very wornout rock scene. I saw most of the principle players in the grunge movement except Nirvana (who opened for Eleventh Dream Day-i was late to that show because I stopped at a party beforehand-DOH!), lived in Spain, did multiple tours with the Dead, quit a job on principle, traveled & camped at most of the National Parks out west. Simply put, I had a blast as a slacker and the grunge bands were a major player in that soundtrack.

The first time I dosed was in 1985, by myself, at 11:30 at nite. The midnite album on the radio was Physical Graphitti. By the time the album was over, I was out of my mind but had that album burned into it as well. The odd part of the experience was that I was unable to listen to PG for years afterwards due to the feelings of anxiety and strangeness it would produce.

I love stories like that :cheers

Twas the only time I experienced full blown hallucinations. :bounce8
