  1. Animals is probably one of my top 10 favorite albums of all time. It leaves me breathless. Wish You Were Here is not far behind. Echoes is an incredible track too! Their early stuff is a different beast.
  2. Excellent post! I too love the non-Mickey line up. Seems it'd be much easier to jam with one drummer. As far as Dark Star goes, I see where you're coming from. At a point it becomes much more fun for Garcia than anyone else. I mentioned earlier in this thread about the point in the DS where Bob just leers at Garcia, wipes his brow and says 'whew'. Very interesting. Was the El Paso a fuck you to Jerry? As far as editing goes, I just hate it when concert movies interlace crowd and visuals when members are soloing. Especially Grateful Dead!
  3. cool, thanks for the info. wish he'd hit the south. i assume it's cost prohibitive to do a band tour outside of a few select markets.
  4. Mark has been quite active. He's got another Sun Kil Moon album coming out in February called Benji. Will Oldham is on it among others. It's a good time to be a Kozelek fan, no doubt. Would really love to see a full band tour again.
  5. http://m.youtube.com/watch?v=jS0dH2YUhbs Really enjoying this album. This song in particular where the chorus talks about playing better than Jay Farrar and hating Nels! Good stuff and classic Koz dry humor.
  6. Love Autumn Defense live! Some of the best shows I've ever seen. Hope they tour a bit more after the album comes out. Circles is still my favorite.
  7. Don't even worry about it! As far as I'm concerned, if the music moves me, I'll listen to a shitty tape of a tape. All this other stuff only seems to matter when the music really isn't that great in the first place.
  8. Excellent point. When people want to criticize Wilco as overrated or whatever, I point to their production, especially AGIB.
  9. What's interesting is Furthur had really jammed out some Bob songs. Check out the recent Red Rox run. Stranger has a long jam before the second verse same with Jack Straw. It works better in Stranger IMO. Stranger us way too slow though. Furthur really us tight now. Too bad they are taking a break. I could actually see myself seeing 2 or 3 in a row.
  10. Right, but bitrate basically becomes a moot issue if the master is good too. Really no need to go above 320. WTA is the loudest to my ears. Interestingly, all the albums tend to have low dynamic range, but they are produced so well, it doesn't seem to matter. Kind of like the 70s albums.
  11. This whole hi-rez stuff only 'sounds better' if the master isn't compressed. Sometimes HDtracks has a different master that is more dynamic allowing for better sound...less loud, more dynamic. Other times, they get the same master as the CD which is usually compressed, loud etc. At this point, you just have more resolution to the fatigue inducing loud master. The kicker is that most folks can't hear the difference with hi-res. Double blind tests have proved this. We can, however, hear the difference with a more dynamic master. So, HDtracks and all the hi-res BS that's being discussed th
  12. don't be fooled. still sounds like shit. just a higher res of a bad master. http://www.dr.loudness-war.info/details.php?id=12760
  13. I was little in the 70s, but I knew about the Eagles. When Henley busted out in the early 80s, I hated him, but didn't know he was from the Eagles. Same with Glenn Frey. Anyway, All She Wants to Do is Dance is one of his songs I actually liked back then. Loved Lou Barlow's comments! I really like the music. Some of it I'm totally bored of, but Hotel California and The Long Run are great albums. That being said, Henley and Frey are two of the biggest assholes in the world! Check out their recent movie History of the Eagles. What I find interesting is that their main talent is being o
  14. i got mine sitting right here. many books have come and gone, but i'll never get rid of that one. i remember in the early 90s there were lots of those picture books. Playin' in the Band was another a friend had. We'd borrow each other's books. Of course, he was cooler as he had Deadbase. I remember spending hours at a time looking at that. I still could. Was listening to Nightfall of Diamonds and was wondering about the first set. @Lammy, i didn't know Stu was in DSO. interesting. Eagan, who plays bobby, has an interesting history. I guess he had all these rare tapes at one point
  15. "...and at the end of Dark Star you can hear jerry really wanted to enter mourning dew...but weir pressed for el paso....hmmm....." I didn't hear that Dew tease, will have to relisten. But, DS>El Paso is pretty crazy. My favorite part of the movie is in the middle of Dark Star you see Bob kind of lean on his amp and say 'whew!' while rubbing his brow and looking at Garcia. It seems like he's thinking, 'come on Jer, let's move on'. It was a shocker to see this as I'd never ever seen or heard any tiredness in any band member during a long tune. Ever! I never thought about it. There s
  16. Lammy I agree with you for the most part. My comment was kin of confusing. If you want Jerry then Stu is it. It's astounding that he's not in Furthur. I miss the classic versions of songs. furthur really slowed everything down and added more solos; eg: jack straw. I find DSO creepy. Stu's Mars Hotel is top for me. I wish they'd tour nationally.
  17. Regarding Furthur surprises, I'm not really sure what they could do. They've done the entire Terrapin for a while now, they played Blues for Allah, Bob's done Walking in Sunshine. What could they do that people actually want to see? I guess they could do a set of rare Pigpen tunes. Regarding fake jerry. I used to loathe JK. I've grown to like him a bit. However, I'm with the above commenter, I don't want a Jerry Clone, I'd like to have a guitarist with their own sound that fits in. Warren Haynes does not fit at all and I think they wasted lots of time with him. Herring was okay. Stu
  18. Well, he writes good words, but his tunes are really pedestrian. I know Jerry is all over his albums, so I just wondered if it's worth tracking them down. From what I've heard, there's definitely a Dead vibe to the albums.
  19. Hadn't heard Heirlooms or PBC. Good stuff, thanks! thanks. i edited my comment. i'm dense this morning
  20. Yes! I totally agree. Love those albums. Run for the Roses has its moments as well. Incidentally, anyone like any of Hunter's albums? I've only heard a few tunes through the years.
  21. Yeah, something happened to Brent's Rhodes in after 81. It sounded like a toy piano. At least by 86 he had an actual piano sound. I didn't mind his synth stuff either. Initially I really liked Donna. A hippie girl in THE hippie band. Come on! I even used to like her songs on the studio albums. Now, not so much. She fits on some of the live stuff. Where she really fit was in the studio as a harmony singer. I absolutely love that sound they got with Jerry, Bob, Donna (Keith) singing together on all those mid 70s albums...Wake-Shakedown. Amazing sound.
  22. I see where your coming from. Yes, the man aged, but he aged quite drastically and quickly as soon as he turned 40. At least to these ears. Drugs, the road...all that. Good point about changes from the 60s through 70s. It's amazing how all these legacy bands started out as Beatle clones and morphed into 'themselves'. The Dead being a great example.
  23. Your comment is nothing short of astounding to me. Listen to a 70s show and then late 80s show. His voice gone and, to me, sounds like shit.
  24. T. Hardy Morris-Audition Tapes One of the dudes form Dead Confederate. Recommended by Patterson Hood on his FB page. Very good.
