  1. http://eugeneagogo.com/Dead-Ringers/a/Q3FMHSX/ here's an old article on the Dead-Ringers. They were fun. Loved hearing the deep cuts etc. That first Kingfish album isn't half bad. BTW, i've been re-reading Blair Jackson's collection of interviews called Going Down the Road. There's some really interesting stuff in there. In an interview with Garcia from the late 80s, Jerry mentions that he was currently working on a big set of lyrics for Jerry Band songs. That would've been cool. He also talks about wanting to devolope more open jam material for the Dead like Darkstar. He says that
  2. yes, other ones 98 was pretty great. just seemed to fall apart after that. The Dead incarnations have been fun too, especially for friends and family who never saw the boys. i love david nelson. he is the kind of guitarist i was mentioning above. he has his own sound which is totally compelling that fits well into the dead material, but not a jerry clone. david nelson band shows are so damn fun. pedal steel is so great live. anyone ever see the Deadringers back in the 90s? it was a bunch of dead related dudes playing dead, kingfish etc. buddy cage played with them as did tom constantan
  3. i see where you're coming from. i just wish that the band had hired a new guitar player that had his own sound that happened to fit the GD repretoire---like david hidalgo...not a jerry sound alike. though i do enjoy that, it's just kind of off to me. the dude in furthur is just not good imo, stu allen kicks ass and can actually jam and keeps his hands on the fretboard. he hits the right garcia points, but also has his own style of linear jamming. kimock's another one. i so wish they could have mickey, bill, phil, bob, hornsby and kimock play as the Dead with hornsby singing all of garcia'
  4. yeah, he's the guitar player for the ratdog quartet thing bob is doing. he's great. nice different sound on the electric rather than a jerry sound alike.
  5. these dudes blow furthur and dark star out of the water, me thinks. love stu allen!
  6. these residency shows sound great. i'm hard pressed to think of another artist who has maintained such a high caliber of creativity other than tom petty. the dude has had hit songs in 4 decades and they are all good songs! if he did do an entire album, i guess damn the torpedoes or full moon fever would be contenders. he's also seems like a great guy.
  7. Waits is definitely one of the most consistent artists EVER. people are right when they say it's all good. i really like the first album and Mule Variations. What's He Building in There is a family favorite. GENIUS! Real Gone is also great. His most harrowing, as far as I'm concerned. I know this would never happen, but I'd love to see him do a solo piano tour with his bass player. I could listen to him rap and tickle the ivories all night. I love Blood Money...the songs you mention are excellent. Love the cover too.
  8. as a fan of prog and jazz i've always been fascinated with the canterbury scene. amazing stuff. RIP
  9. thanks for the links. nice pedal steel!
  10. good point. i'm so thankful for amazon, but would really like to support my local store. glad to see your optimism about the resurgence of CDs. i'd love to be able to get gatefold artwork with a CD. that would be cool.
  11. what's ironic about record store day is that there's a contingent of folks who don't go precisely because of the crowds and the extra stuff interesting point that the RSD stuff is not appreciating in value. on a cool note, my favorite record store that closed in 09 just reopened in a better spot. only problem is, he's only selling vinyl! i still like to get CDs too, so hopefully he'll expand at some point. just such a cool guy. so glad he's back. maybe this is all turning around to some sort of balance point.
  12. i didn't know the UT stuff was reissued on vinyl. i may have to pick up Anodyne. great album. i always wondered what the next album would've been like if the band hadn't broken up. Drown after I Must Be High would've been an interesting sequence.
  13. You missed my point. I was referring to ACD and HT...the two most recent albums. To me, and many others, Son Volt seemed like a band with the Boquist brothers. There seems to be less collaboration in son volt v2.0 Read this thread. You are the one that comes off as a troll. I don't know what your problem is dude, but you need to chill out. This is the third time we've had to agree to disagree. The last time you got sanctioned. So just stop bullying. My comments are no more trollish or inflammatory than the current discussion of the most recent Loose Fur album where folks are posting
  14. i'm just thinking back to the first three albums when the boquist brothers added a lot of parts to the songs to really take them to the next level. these last two records seem to be jay tunes with a backing band. i'm curious how the new guitarist will fit in. this is not an anomalous opinion btw. no one talks about son volt here much any more, jay's board is all but dead and may folks here have said that they lost track of farrar after the second or third SV album. as far as the title goes, i just don't see jay as a honky-tonk artist a la dwight or buck. as i said, will be interesting
  15. I have a special power. I can make a comment anywhere on the web about Jay Farrar and Cortez will immediately respond. Luckily, I try to wield this power for the good of all musical criticism and against all alt.country sacred cows.
  16. seems like this is a jay solo record. band really wasn't in the studio. too bad. jay needs a band. i really liked ACD. Jay has kind of lost the gruff in his voice and tends to sing off key these days. that being said, he can still write a good song. definitely want to hear this. goofy title though.
  17. i'm not a huge PJ fan, but i love Yield. good call. also love those Mazzy Star albums. i wore those out when they were released.
  18. over the past few years it's dawned on me how lucky i was to be in my teens and 20s in the 90s when phish was at their peak. i meet kids these days who are in awe that i saw shows in 90-00 and many of the live phish releases to boot. it's like me meeting someone who was at cornell. i don't listen to phish much anymore, but i have to say that it is really fun to see many of the shows i went to as famous phish shows in history. at this point, i don't think i could stomach a phish show today. the scene is just ridiculous and i was pretty burned out by the late 90s. unlike the dead in the 90
  19. I know...i just love it though...especially the two you mentioned. i'm surprised you like Le Noise so much. it is a good album. i would add: Fire And Water-Free Jailbreak-Thin Lizzy Apollo-Brian Eno wish you were here-PF animals-PF Time(the rev) gillian welch Hotel California-Eagles But Seriously-Joe Walsh Terroir Blues-Jay Farrar Physical Graffiti-Led Zeppelin Beggar's-Stones
  20. these are some great lists. lot's of diversity within the same lists is a sign of a true music fan. here's a few for me In The Dark-Grateful Dead A Ghost Is Born-Wilco Neil Young-Neil Young On The Beach-Neil Young Revolver-Beatles Trick Of The Tale-Genesis Close To The Edge-Yes John Prine-John Prine Pat Metheny Group-Pat Metheny Group The Rainmaker-Flower Kings Crosby, Stills & Nash-S/T
  21. yeah, that was a pretty good movie. i saw that tour. the one before that, trunk show, has not been released on dvd yet. i got to see it and it really isn't that good. i wish neil would just take a project and really work on it to make it good rather than releasing half assed ideas every six months. unfortunately. psychedelic pill is not holding up for me.
  22. oh, just saw luther is out. Damn! he's just so great.
  23. i like big moon ritual better, but i love vibration and light suite on magic door. as with most double albums, this would've been a good single CD. it was fun to have two new cds though. i've been revisiting Before the Frost. that is a masterpiece of an album. i just love it all. too bad it came out so late in the decade as i think it's up there with the best and should've been on some best of lists. cool to see the boys touring. bet we'll see a new studio album in the spring or fall. chris robinson is one prolific MF.
  24. there is one group that will not get hurt no matter what happens, the rich. i am utterly sickened by this current conversation about taxing the taxed out middle class and cutting the pittance we give to old folks and those with disabilities. the worst part is that lots of people have been persuaded to defend the rich and blame all their problems on the 'entitled'. however, it's not surprising. we go to war to make peace, so everything's backward. something will happen. things might get a bit worse, but not much. entitlements are a revolution insurance policy for the powers that be.
  25. that is cool. jack looks a little 'too cool', but whatever. that movies is fun and the sound is so great. i love just hearing the two guitars, bass and drums and keeping the other instruments low in the mix. AMan-i'm with you on those three, and i'd add in sticky fingers. Some Girls is good as is about half of Tatoo You. Black and Blue is just so, so bad.
