  1. Picked this up yesterday (apparently yesterday was the official release date) and I think it is great. I would say better than Transistor Radio and pretty damn close to Transfiguration of Vincent but when it comes down to it this guy has yet to release any bad material.

  2. well it has a tube in it but i don't think anyone would seriously consider it a 'tube' amp. my understanding is that these little tube amps are *cough* a marketing scam. they are essentially a solid state amp with a little tube in them so companies can claim they are selling you a 'tube' amp. ah marketing geniuses!

I could be wrong of course, but my opinion is from reading about the little tube amps on some guitar/amp forums.

I've definetly heard of/seen those sorts of amp but I thought that those Epi ones are legit. Maybe im wrong?

  3. So I got the record player today and tried it out with one of my few records (Billy Bragg's - Workers Playtime) and was impressed but noticed that the quality wasn't that great. So I was wondering, what difference does a cartridge/stylus make? How do I replace the current cartridge with a newer, better quality one? All help is appreciated.

Edit: I find that it is not so much an issue of quality as opposed to an issue of a lot of crackling and popping sounds. Also, the record I used had never been played or removed from its sleeve before so its not an issue of the record being scratched or anything.

  4. I bought their 2nd and 3rd EPs (the first one seems to be hard to come by) and thought they were solid but from what I hear you need to see them live. Good band though. My only complaint is that their singer's voice has a striking resemblence to Gavin DeGraw which irks me at times.

  5. Ehh, I prefer lap steel. Lots of the stuff Nels does on lap steel is better then most things most pedal steel players are doing these days. One by One is a great example, his lap steel bits on Kicking Television are far better then the pedal steel bits Bob Egan did on the Mermaid Avenue album.

I think One by One is my favorite song off of KTV because of that lap steel part.

  6. I can sort of see what your saying. If your talking about the intro part I am pretty sure nels is using some sort of screw driver/metal rod thing and sort of banging against the strings and yeah it sounds a bit out of tune but I think its the intention. I just listened to 4 or 5 different versions of the song and I can hear it sometimes but not always.

  7. I was furious when dylantabs was shut down because of this. If anyone else was a frequented that site, I managed to get an archive of it if you're interested.

    Edit: Nevermind! It's back!

Good to know thats up and running again, I missed that site for a while.

Edit: Also this whole thing about shutting down tabsites is rediculous. This doesn't even compare to music downloading. All these tabs are user created and submitted, its equatable to downloading fans' covers of a band's songs.

  8. Cool stuff but I don't think its him singing is it?

That basic trio has been augmented on various tracks by Julian Casablancas, Jody Porter (Fountains of Wayne), Ben Kweller, Sean Lennon, Chris Feinstein, Mikki James, Sammy James Jr. (The Mooney Suzuki) and Ryan Gentles.

According to his myspace it has a bunch of guest vocalists.

  9. I've been playing an Epiphone SG model. It was my first electric guitar and since then I have owned a Jazzmaster and a Custom Telecaster. I sold both the Tele and the Jazzmaster because I realized I only really play the SG because it plays and sounds so good and at around 400-500 dollars those things are a steal.

  10. Another thing to think about when you do get your deck:

If your stereo/receiver doesn't have PHONO inputs, you may need to get an external pre-amp through which you route your turntable outputs (you can get them pretty cheap, usually). If your deck has a built-in pre-amp then you won't need to worry about this.

I have a stereo system already that im pretty sure i can run it through...hopefully as well as some connector cables that I use to connect my stereo system to my laptop hopefully I should be set.

  11. Awesome, thanks for the suggestions. I've been looking at that sony one. I usually have the problem with sony electronics in general that they break down really quickly but if you've been using that one for two years sounds pretty well made.

  12. So for all of my life I've been a CD/Computer type guy when it comes to getting my music but I have been interested in getting a record player recently and was wondering what do I need to get a decent system. I have speakers and I guess all I need is record player. I am pretty low on cash so the cheaper the better any suggestions would be appreciated.

  13. I'll through my bid in for Boston University even though it happened a year or so ago.

Edit: By through I obviously mean throw.
