  1. I would say that Randy Newman is hardly underrated or underlistened. I believe he has a few songwriting Oscars nominations and at least one win, numerous Grammy nominations and is a widely covered songwriter. Hislist of accomplishments far outweighs most of the people discussed here. He had a great run of albums on WB, but as with most older songwriters, his output is slower than it was.

I think what I mean is that Randy's records are often overlooked because of his work with films. When I tell people I like Randy Newman the usual response is something in regards to Toy Story as opposed to Sail Away.

  2. Seriously: Daniel Bejar, Jeff Lynne

Dan is amazing, Jeff Lynne, not so much.

Also agree with Randy Newman as either underrated/underlistened.

In terms of Neil Diamond, I always like watching/listening to his appearance at the Last Waltz. "Dry Your Eyes" is a pretty good song.

Can I say David Berman? Its hard to give him enough credit as a songwriter, just amazing.

I'll throw in J. Mascis, sometimes it just gets lost in the fuzz and distortion but he writes some great songs.

  3. I fell in love with Jim through Insignificance but after repeated listens I believe Eureka to be his true masterpiece. I have a some of his other solo stuff, Loose Fur, and some Gastr Del Sol stuff. I have tried some of his other solo albums and found them to be a little bit on the side of overly avant-gardeish but to each his own. If you haven't heard his work with Sonic Youth (mainly Sonic Nurse) definitely check that record out because its absolutely incredible and his presence is certainly felt.

So yeah I am about eleven months late on the Rubies bandwagon...but damn this is a great record.

This record is so underrated. Definitely top 3 of the year for me. For some reason people just seem to forget about it.

NP: Ghostface Killah - More Fish, I loved Fishscale and this is kind of just more of that album. Nice production and Ghostface is a great MC so no complaints.

  5. I'm really digging this song, more than intervention. I was under the assumption that they were going to hit a major sophomore slump (where can you go after coming on to the scene with as much hype as they did with an album as good as funeral?) but things look to be shaping up nicely. Never seen them live but will do so without a doubt this time around.

Unrelated Arcade Fire Question For Solace: I have a set of Arcade Fire demos called "2001 Demos." I don't really know anything about them (or even where I got them, it was a while ago) but was wondering what the deal with them was. Is that some sort of different incarnation of the band because it sounds a lot different then the other AF material I have (Funeral, s/t EP), is that even Win singing? I can't tell.

  6. I saw the same show. I didn't enjoy it much. I feel like Bob's having the time of his life, and maybe he thinks he's putting on the greatest show on earth. But there's a disconnect between the performers and the audience I just couldn't ignore. He does what he wants, and I'm fine with that, but I think I'm retiring from seeing Dylan live. The Raconteurs were pretty good.

I too was at this Boston show and was really disappointed. This was actually my first Dylan show and I have been reluctant to go see him up until this point for fear that it would be a giant disappointment, which it was. I really like Modern Times and would much enjoyed hearing him play cuts off that and Love and Theft rather than his classic tunes. He's completely butchered all of his best songs and its just painful to listen to. The three Modern Times songs that were played though were all very solid. Also, Raconteurs were just awful, but I hate that record.

  7. Terror Twilight just doesn't seem like a Pavement record to me, either in production or content. Still some really good songs, but I can't remember the last time I listened to it.

I mean TT definitely doesn't have Pavement's signature lo-fi-ish aesthetic (see: produced by nigel godrich) but I think regardless its an absolutely incredible album, one of my favorites.

  8. I still don't get all the love WZ gets and why it seems to be the fan favorite. S+E and CRCR are, at least to my ears, far better records. I like the WZ reissue for one reason - Painted Soldiers!

I dunno, I like S+E a lot but I don't think i could pick between, CRCR, WZ, and TT...do pavement fans like terror twilight? im not sure but i think its an amazing record.

  9. Thanks. I'll have to check it out. I painted 12-15 hours a day all this week, and besides the student-run radio, listened to only 4 albums: YLT's I'm Not Afraid... , Jeff Buckley's Grace, a Tweedy/Kinks-heavy mix, and Crooked Rain, over and over and over. I love Malkmus. :cheers

Pavement is the shit, this Wowee Zowee reissue may have made me think WZ is my favorite Pavement album but I'm not sure yet.
