  1. I care about the All-Star Game this year, as my favorite team may well be in competition to win the pennant.
  2. From Wikipedia: 1947 was the first year that baseball allowed fans to vote for the starters on the All-Star team. In 1957, fans of the Cincinnati Reds stuffed the ballot box and elected 7 Reds players to start in the All-Star Game. They were: Johnny Temple, 2B Roy McMillan, SS Don Hoak, 3B Ed Bailey, C Frank Robinson, LF Gus Bell, CF Wally Post, RF The only non-Red elected to start for the National League was St. Louis Cardinals' first baseman Stan Musial. While the Reds were known to be a great offensive team with many outstanding position players, most bas
  3. They tried taking the All-Star decision out of the fans' hands back in either the 50s or the 60s, and it proved to be enormously unpopular, so they gave it back. Guess what? It's not a meritocracy. It's a popularity contest. You don't like it? Next year, take a day off of work and spend it voting over and over for who you think should be in it.
  4. If Detroit can do it, so can the Royals. Key is bringing back the powder blue road unis.
  5. Let's go take some scalps! Where's Jane McCrea?
  6. France, in addition to the U.S., Canada and the United Kingdom, is one of the four countries I'd lay down my life for. (Maybe Holland too. And definitely the Iroquois Confederacy. Make that five.)
  7. Sorry, I'm more French than anything else. Le jour se leve!
  8. I have obtained a supply of diet Berries & Cream Dr Pepper and will report my findings later.
  9. Brazil never looked very Brazilian in this Cup; I'm not surprised France beat them. I'm penciling in a France-Germany final at this point. Zidane is playing like a man possessed. And what must Rooney do to redeem himself in the eyes of his countrymen? Kill himself? Go play in the MLS?
  10. My old-school TiVo, loaded with a T160 tape on SP caught the PKs, and the scuffle at the end. A fantastic game. My latent WASPishness - no, I'm not talking about Blackie Lawless, smartasses - will be pulling for England tomorrow.
  11. I'll say. I don't mind losing to the Sox - we're a zillion games in front of Philly and it makes things harder for the Yankees - but to get swept would be embarassing.
  12. Allons enfants de la Patrie Le jour de gloire est arriv
  13. Well, the Azzuri have had a lot of bad luck in World Cups, so maybe it's just karma balancing itself out. Australia had a man advantage, and couldn't convert, so it's not like they was robbed. It's not good, though, that the refs are playing such a pivotal role in so many games.
  14. I tried to read a Chomsky book once, but gave up halfway through.
  15. That's what they used to say about Mike Piazza!
  16. Sweden are getting the meatballs knocked out of them.
