  1. I ended up reading Betty's story last night. That whole deal sounds unfortunate for all parties involved. As some have speculated, this could be a reason why Cornell '77 and the Old Renaissance Faire, Veneta, OR '72 have yet to be released. I was impressed to hear that she took the initiative to record these shows on her own equipment. I get the impression that recording gigs for her was a labor of love project and not something she did for money.

The other factor on those two could be that they are the best circulated shows around. I know they were probably the first two boots I feel in love with.

  2. i can picture that... but careful, there are yoko haters here ;)

FUG EM. The lady is a true original. I think the problem is most people who have heard her stuff don't listen to that sort of music in the first place, they're beatles fans. Its not surprising they don't get it.

When I read that Nels was playing in Yoko's band I couldn't think of a better match. SO PERFECT. Would love to see her with nels and thruston, now that would melt faces.

  3. Not that I don't agree that the prices are high, but I have a hard time believing Neil himself is personally setting all these ticket prices. Especially on these recent tours, with the theaters he's playing. Those places just aren't cheap to book, so the tickets, naturally, won't be cheap to buy.

I've seen many acts at the theater in question with tickets priced at 45 dollars for the best seats, this is a money grab. As someone else said, he's doing it because he can.

Its really a shame too, I feel like I grew up at last chance for a kid to see some of these acts (i'm 25). I saw neil with good seats for 50, saw the stones for 60. In the past several years tickets prices have gone through the roof it seems like. Its totally unnecessary, bands like phish and radihoead haul around HUGE lighting rigs and play sold out concerts all over and charge around 50 dollars. Phish just raised there prices by ten dollars but were kind enough to through in free sbd recordings with all tickets (which previously cost 10 dollars per show). Both of these bands are turning profits, there is no reason a solo acoustic show needs to be this expensive.

Its easy for older folks to say go to your local club, I agree people should but tell me this: when you were 15 who did you want to see in concert? Were they playing the local club? And when you did see this artist that was larger then life for you what kind of impact did have on your love of live music?

Some of my greatest memories growing up were getting to see these legends who changed my world view, I know I'm not alone on this. Its really sad to me that some other kid in high school right now won't be able to have their mind blown by Neil Young, they won't hear the roar of the crowd as he plugs in or the way the man can silence a crowd at the piano or on acoustic guitar.

  4. Got to meet him very briefly backstage once in BOS in early 90s. The man was short. Not enough vegetables, likely.

HAHAHA! That all meat diet, don't know what to say about that!

I think it is safe to say the psychedelic sixties would have had trouble taking off without Bear.

  5. Pablo has 4-5 songs i consider complete classic Brit guitar rock songs: You, Ripcord, Prove Yourself, Anyone Can Play Guitar & Blow Out. it was a refreshing listen in '93. sure it hasn't aged well production-wise, but those songs still hold up for me.

as far as what albums i like more... gotta run to lunch, more later :).

IMO Pablo Honey is a band still finding its identity. Where as this album and In Rainbows sound like mature radiohead albums, a band who knows who they are and aren't trying to prove anything.

WOuld really like to see your list though when you get back.

  6. ISO,

sorry to get so literal, wasn't trying to attack you. I just keep hearing that same complaint.

I'm not sure what seems so empty about the record though. It seems to have to definitive sides. The first being bloom through feral which is much more electronic and lots-separator which are more conventional songs.

    _)_)_)

As for great tracks, my personal favorites have been: bloom, magpie, lotus, give up the ghost and separator.

  7. are you really that surprised though?

i mean just because you like it, that doesn't mean you can't look outside your own preferences...

i'm not surprised in the least this is getting "lukewarm" reviews by Radiohead's standards, as it's certainly my least favorite RH album. notice i didn't say it's bad, it's not, it's still a very good album, just not one of the best things i've heard this year by a mile.

You like Pablo Honey more than this?

And no, I'm no surprised. I won't be surprised either when at the end of the year many of these critics put it on their years best list.

I respect your opinon, so I'm curious what these albums that are a mile better( :) ) ?

  8. Been a while since I popped in here. Hope everyones doing well. Since the phish came back I've been so overwhelmed keeping up with them that I haven't had time to dig back into the dead. Further really hasn't help peak my interest either.

Ratdog has a few good originals. Like Two Dijnn, Ashes and Glass was always a favorite when I used to catch their sets.

  9. So kudos to Radiohead for releasing only as much as they felt was worth releasing.

    BINGO!

Can't believe how much crap this record is taking. I guess it was bound to happen eventually, nobody likes anyone being considered perfect. I honestly think the last two are among the best of their career.

  10. albums should be at least 12 tracks long and should last through my commute from jersey to the bronx.

I'm sorry but this just seems like a silly argument.

    1. 40 minutes for an album used to be pretty standard. Check this out:

    Rubber Soul = 35:50

    Revolver = 34:59

    Sgt. Peppers = 39:42

    Pet Sounds = 35:58

    Abbey Road is 47:23

    2. 12 tracks? Some albums have two tracks, some even have one. They're still albums. Secondly, there have been tons of classics that were 8 track albums, for your consideration:

Talking Heads - Remain In Light

On The Beach - Neil Young

    Television - Marquee Moon

    Panda Bear - Person Pitch

    Jim O'Rourke - Eureka

Iggy and the Stooges - Raw Power

Velvet Underground - White Light White Heat

    Joanna Newsom - Ys

David Bowie - Station to Station

    Can - Ege Bamyasi

    Can - Future Days

    Can - Tago Mago

    Kraftwerk - Autobahn

    Sonic Youth - Murray Street

    Nick Drake - Pink Moon

Leonard Cohen - Songs of Love and Hate

Bruce Springsteen - Born to Run

I guess these all were to short though, right?

  11. sorry, i'm with bjorn on this...

def not all that "dance-y" of beats on here, not for me.

I mean obviously its not a clubbing record, my initial comment was that it is the most danceable thing they've released.

Its a dark record, I can see why dancing isn't the first thing that comes to mind. I happen to think its got a heavy afrobeat influence in the rhythm section.

  12. I am liking it too, but I am a bit confused by the statements that it's a great dance record. Can people post videos of themselves dancing to it so I can see what they mean? The only dance I can think to do to this record is sort of an Ed Grimley number.

    turn the album on.

stand in front of your stereo.

listen to the drums and the bass.

if you can not find a beat that provokes you to shake your hips that is your loss.

  13. Funny I keep hearing people say this sounds like their other records or they didn't do anything new here. Each time I read those kind of statements I'm left wondering what record they were listening to.

This is the most upbeat danceable thing they've ever put out. The bass and drum tracks are unlike any of their records, the afrobeat influence is used to incredible effect.

Personally I've been loving the record, I have no problem saying: they've done it again.

  14. I'm pretty sure Jeff is. You're supporting the candidate you want in the way that you do best, and Jeff is doing his best to support his candidate.

I don't see any reason to turn a concert thread into a political thread.

    Its a political concert?

    And jeff is a hypocrite.

He was all upset about bush's wars, civil liberty violations, banker giveaways and now that the democracts are doing the same thing he wants to help them get elected??

    Seems ass backwards.

  15. Hi, This will be my sixth year attending, thanks so much for putting this on. You really do do a wonderful job. Any idea of when Jeff will be performing?

Not that I won't be there either way, I just work at 6 am now which makes this a little more difficult then when I was in collage. :)

  16. Hello friends.

    FYI

Jeff will be auctioning off a private concert in your home for you and 29 friends during his performance.

I hope to see y'all there. Hoping our event isn't getting old hat to you. At the very least Jeff is never "old hat".

This year you will be able to watch and donate live on line http://www.letterstosantachicago.com

    Thanks guys!
