  1. I have been wanting to start listening to Devendra Banhart for a while now, but have been unsure where to start. He played at ATP in December but I missed him due to a scheduling conflict.

How does this album rate with in comparison to the rest of his catalog? Is this a good starter album?

I'd say you want to go with Rejoicing In Hands, Cripple Crow is good as well for a look at the many styles he plays.

  2. If you go to bt.etree.org, and do a search, you will find hundreds of GD soundboard torrents.

Oh I'm aware of etree, thanks though A-man.

I ended up getting the road trips from MSG 1990. Started on disc 2, I'm liking what I'm hearing.

Only think i don't dig is Vince. There were never any shows were Hornsby played keys unaccompanied right?

  3. Well, you have to start with 3/29/90 Nassau of course. Even if you're not a big fan of that era it's hard to dispute that that show is one of the great ones.

A few others (off the top of my head):

10/9/89 - the Dark Star breakout ("Formerly The Warlocks")

10/16/89 - officially released as "Nightfall Of Diamonds"

10/20/90 - VERY good show from the Bruce era - parts of this are on one of the Road Trips series

12/31/90 - last great NYE show

6/28/92 - best Vince era show I ever caught

5/26/93 - one of the last truly awesome shows

    Hope this helps. Enjoy!

You can't deny the Nassau gig, which is why I already have it hehehehe.

Thanks for the tips, I'll have to search those out being as though I no longer have a hook up on soundboards. Our any of the Dick's Picks from this period worth grabbing?

  4. From Pitchfork: Earlier this week, Wilco announced a monster international tour that'll keep them good and busy up through May. But even with all those travel plans ahead of him, frontman Jeff Tweedy has another big project in the works. Billboard reports (via TwentyFourBit) that Tweedy is currently working on an album with Chicago soul/gospel deity Mavis Staples.

According to Billboard, Tweedy and Staples are working together at Wilco's Chicago studio, the Wilco Loft. And they've recruited a couple of other high-wattage singers to join the sessions: Nora O'Connor and Kelly Hogan, who have worked with Neko Case. The album should come out on Anti- this year.

HOW FUCKING AWESOME!?!?!?! I for one am extremely excited about this. Hopefully this is the first of many future producing projects for Jeff.

  5. So I got to come clean, I'm not big on late eighties early nineties dead. BUT this guy I'm working with is and he just got a portable music player which I told him I would add some shows too. I was wondering if you guys have any recommendations, any of the dicks picks?.

  6. It seems like they stopped doing covers about 2-3 years ago but here is a list of some I remember:

    Something In the Air

Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow

    Love Will Keep Us together

    Ziggy Stardust

    I Shall Be Released

    Don't Fear The Reeper

    Comment?

    Political Science

Yup and there have been many more hell there is even a two disc set called "Someone Else's Songs" that is just wilco/tweedy covering other artists.

  7. Ok, I have been jamming along to Bertha from Winterland 77 for the last 2 hours trying to sound like Jerry. Not happening yet, his greatness eludes me. Damn fun song to play along with though. I have now officially stolen several of his licks.

you'll be in further in no time. :)

  8. I've got a few of the shows. I think summer was excellent, too. Still great stuff.

Oh hell yeah the second leg had some great moments. But these fall shows have are more on point through out. I really think by this time next year it will be like they never left.

Have you herd the Albany shows yet? I just finished night two and wow! Cinci night one was great as well.

I got to catch night two in philly which had many peeks and valleys but the opening Kill Devil Falls followed by 46 Days had shook the place done.

  9. This always confuses me when folks say this. It's not supposed to have the same sound. When the GD covered so many songs that they did they weren't trying to necessarily copy/emulate the originals. That's hoiw I look at the off-shoot bands. Anyone looking for the GD sound is living in futility (not you, just in general). I enjoy hearing tunes I love by decent musicians. It's the vibe I'm mostly seeking these days and as long as true efforts are put forth from the stage I can enjoy the tunes/time. It's the live experience of this body of work that still does it for me. Pales to the original, of course, but I appreciate the efforts and still get something out of it.

i think you misunderstood me, I agree its not supposed to sound the same. Thats why in my mind Phil's lineups were always best. I think that what their going for with John is trying to emulate what no longer exists.

i'm all about hearing these songs still but I don't want to hear Jerry's tone, I don't want to hear his style because it makes that missing ingredient even more apparent. NO ONE can do what HE did, thats what made him who he was. Hell Sless and Kimock share similarities with Jerry but are unique enough that their playing emulate jerry ALL the time, which is precisely what John is trying to do.

  10. I myself am a fan of John Kadlicek ("Fake Jerry") and cannot be happier that he's playing with Phil and Bob in Further. For Phil and Bob to be Phil and Bob, they need to be led. What's often been wrong with Phil and Friends and Ratdog has been that they each try to lead their respective bands, while neither made a name for himself by being a leader. One is a bass player, one is a rhythm guitarist.

I remember seeing The Dead in 2003, when they had Jimmy Herring and Warren Haynes onstage together. Everyone would look to Bob during the jams for Bob's little hand signals, and the result was a Mindless Twaddling Fest that went nowhere. Same kind of thing happened with Phil and Friends, with Phil giving signals through his microphone (but the last lineup with Jackie Greene and Larry Campbell was pretty great). It was unnatural.

Say what you want about Kadlicek's choice to devote his life to mastering the sound of Jerry Garcia, but with him onboard, Phil and Bob are more true to the music of the Grateful Dead than they've ever been. And be honest - do you like hearing Bob sing Tennessee Jed and Scarlet Begonias, Phil singing Eyes of the World and Franklin's Tower? Further '10.

See I have always thought Phil's bands have had plenty of direction, even better then the cambell/greene lineup was the one before with cambell, sless, molo, barraco, osbrone and osby. I think Phil was a major part of leading the deads sound and jams, much mores o then bob ever did.

I actually love phil's singing. He may not be good but he puts his heart into it and you can hear it, especially on Terripan or Franklin's. The real problem is your never going to get that old sound back and thats what makes this boring to me. The Grateful Dead are long gone, if you want to hear that sound there are more then enough recordings to keep you busy.

  11. Listened to the 12.13.09 Furthur show. It's good. Definitely worth the download and a listen. John Kadlecik does play and sing well. The only clunker was the Mason Children. I also thought Weir's guitar was a bit low in the mix, esp. in the beginning of the first set. I kinda wished I would have tried to get decent seats for one of the Chicago shows. Only upper balcony seats are available, now at Ticketmaster. Also, Jeff Chementi plays great throughout, especially when he play the piano.

I guarantee you there will be cheap seats for this available as we get closer.

Also in the past I have never had a problem with Auditorium Theater staff letting me stand in the back on the floor by the bar or at the back of the first balcony. Last time I saw wilco there their was no problem sneaking down to a good seat once the show was underway. Not to mention it will be a mad house in there with all the heads and security won't know what to do a'la Phil at the Chicago Theater a few years back.

  12. Phil and Booby wanted "the dead" to continue touring.

Rumor has it Billy refused and Mickey kinda said, "well if hes not coming neither am I" and that phil and bobby have committed to playing together for the next couple of years. Warren and Jackie do their own thing, so they scrapped this band together. It is kinda cheesy.

I wish ratdog would bring back Wasserman. Seeing RD in small venues and doing their own thing was awesome.

Once Robin signed on and they started playing more and more Jerry tunes, RD lost an edge IMHO.

Where does this info come from though? Is just speculation? Seems believable although I don't get who the fuck picked these guys. I think everyone of us could have picked a better band in a 10 seconds.

As for Wasserman, the guy is a beast on the bass and like you said actually helped make Ratdog more then a dead cover band. I'd be soooooooooooooo down for some weir/wasserman acoustic dates.

Hell I'm down for anything these guys wanna do as long as they bring something new to the table. While Phil and Freinds was mostly a dead cover band at least Phil was constantly coming up with new arrangements and players. I wouldn't even care if they weren't playing "new" material as long as they bring something new to it. Like is bob and wasserman did a bunch of covers or phil did something well ANYTHING.

ETA: I loved what the Rhythm Devils line up was doing (not lyrically or vocally but musically). It was fresh but that women stunk.)

  13. I heard the other guys were going to carry on with Wilco while Jeff focuses on the "Tweedy brand."

I don't know who your source is but I heard Sansone is pulling Doug Yule. The new wilco album is going to be called "Sqaushed" I CAN'T WAIT!

  14. Coincidentally, that guitar is known as the "Alembic Further" and retails for a pretty sizable chunk. Are we sure it's not the original, though? Ryan Adams was playing the original with The Dead.....

    Man I hope not.

I can't believe Phil signed on for this shit. From what I've herd Bobby is taking the reigns with this band. I know its wishful thinking but I wish Phil would do more experimental music, like the one off show with Molitz/Molo and that trumpet player whose name is coming up blank.

As for Jamica, I mean I get the attraction I've just never thought about traveling to a Ratdog show, let alone dropping a few grand.

  15. I can't believe people would fly to Jamica for Ratdog. I've seen them six or so times and have to debate weather to see them when they play a few blocks from my house. They are SOOOOOOOOOO inconsistent. The last time I saw them they laid down one of the bests sets I've seen any grateful dead offshoot play, set two though was one of the worst.

Anyone listened to any of these Furthur shows? I haven't been to excited due to fake Jerry and Jay Lanes presence.

  16. Yeah but they're not headlining and the ticket price and not wanting to see any of the other bands made it an easy choice to wait until February in Milwaukee.

They actually are headlining. Bela Fleck plays till 10 and then Dr. Dog goes on and they've got a full set. There were tickets on Groupon.com two days ago for 15 bucks.

  17. Hey no problem.

My intro to the band was at the Wilco Millenium Park show. I listened to Dr Dog's myspace the day before and heard "My Old Ways" and could not get it out of my head. Seeing them live from 9 rows back there was awesome and I finally got to see them again at the Double Door earlier this year.

Needless to say, I have picked up tickets to see them in Milwaukee in February (I'm about a 90 minute drive from Chicago and Milwaukee so it helps out greatly when I want to see bands). I might even hit Madison or Iowa City too.

you do realize they're playing chicago saturday right?
