  1. Well, lets toss some good 'ol New Riders of the Purple Sage in this here thread.

First, I'll blame Jon Graboff and the last 4 years-ish of chasing The MF Cardinals around the states

for getting me back into the pedal steel sound. It seems a "sound" my ears, mind and feet crave

lately. I've been grabbing old shows (Garcia on the PS) off the archive.org and have grabbed some

new shows on bt etree lately. The local left of the dial station up here has been playing some tracks

off the upcoming new release. What I have heard off it excites me.

I do wish John Dawson would come out of retirement but the current line-up does sound great. Buddy Cage

still has me tapping my feet. Good to see Robert Hunter pennng some recent tunes for them. The style

of the NRPS, IMO blends itself well to Hunter's lyrics.

So with all that said, where the hell is the leak?

    :blink

is there a new album coming out?

  2. You CAN hear the party "dripping through the speakers" on that 5/11/78 show. Rumor is that the whole band ingested some good mescaline that night, and it sure sounds like it. Not the best 'Dancin' ever, but those vocals are CRAAAAZY.

I'd always herd about this night. I thought this was going to be sloppy but sounds decent enough. The only weird thing is the vocals, which there could be a number of reasons for their antics (even just a little marijuana). Is the rest of the show as goofy?

  3. agreed

also 4/25 at MSG and 5/2 at the spectrum were really good as well

is 5/2 the morning dew show?

I listened to it live, it was fairly good but also a bit sloppy if I remember maybe I should download that one. Still haven't herd MSG.

I also herd the stretch of Space>darkstar> king solomon from dc which was solid (and can be herd on the philzone.com front page, there are several other tour soundboard samples up).

  4. As for this tour, are there any front runners for best show/s so far? I realize this is subjective.

I got a buddy at work that followed them on tour in the 80's, didn't even know they're touring now.

I wanted to get him a copy of a show or two, but didn't know which to look for.

I really liked both IZOD shows with Brandford, 2nd night of worcester was good as well. Chicago night 2 was good. I haven't listened past the chicago dates.

If you want some of the shows email me at mattmc1986@yahoo.com

  5. I'll be painting with my girl freind but more thwn likely she wont stay up for the whole show. ill probably be on for set two.

ps. thursday should be broadcast from the link above. possibly with video.

Hey calvino I was gonna send you that link but the pm feature isnt working, wanna post your email address.

  6. Planning to be around too. It will be interesting to see if any of the Allman Brothers sit in. I am assuming some will.

  7. I guess your reading comprehension is not what you think it is. It already did. We are just waiting for the introduction. That's what the special drawing rights are. No kidding. Ever wonder why they never shut the border down during the flu "scare"? How about because there is no border anymore. We are already in this North American Union, they just don't bother formally announcing it. What should bother people is this was never even given a vote in our congress, just passed secretly behind our backs. If history is any indication, when govts. don't tell people about things they doing it's because what they are doing is not good.

Seems rather close minded of people to listen to JFK's speech and not see what he was talking about right now. Some people think he gave his life to warn people of the dangers they faced. But I know in your world it is all an amazing series of coincidences. Take some time and go back and read those screeds from the early 20th century, most of it has come to pass. Maybe they knew something we don't since all the above described authors were also members of the CFR. Again, it's not the end of the world just the beginning of a very bleak one, like the ones Philip K. Dick and George Orwell wrote about. I still have a sense of humanity and do not wish that on future generations. I will fight it all that I can but I know it will all still come to pas but I could not face my children knowing I did not fight to keep this old and much better world intact for them. But I'm not going to spend the day arguing about it. You seem like a good a patriotic fellow so we can agree to disagree.

    Kennedy was a prick

  8. I don't know that I will. For as long as there has been time, people having been warning everyone else of the End of Time, in some incarnation or another. You're simply filling a role that's been around for years, and will be for years to come.

I wish you were right but I have a hard time believing that. The enviorment is collapsing, nuclear weapons are widespread and its only a matter of time before they can in the hands of a loose cannon (not that they already aren't).

Pakistan having a nuclear weapons and being on the verge of collapse is a terribly scary notion.

  9. Skip the first 8 songs and listen to numbers 9 and 10 instead. I was going to write extensively on this later, but actually this album is alike a mediocre dinner with an excellent dessert. The final two numbers, while maybe not the greatest thing Dylan has ever done, redeems the entire album. After slogging through some okay songs, some better than others (the others being Jolene and Shake Shake Mama) and some others that are passible and one that clearly he gives Willie Dixon credit for because he knows Willie's estate will sue his ass when others won't, and listening to a bunch of songs that are okay but not terribly convincing; we end up with I Feel a change Comin' On, which is actually quite moving and sincere. This is followed by Its All Good, which frankly is the best song on the album, harking back a bit to Highway 61 and dripping with some irony and a bit of bitterness that is also fairly convincing, not to mention it seems to cop a bit of attitude from Rodney Crowell's later works (including his excellent recent album Sex and Gasoline, for those who have not checked it out, do so and copping some Rodney is all good....) Finally on this last number the band actually gets something to do rather than trudge through chord changes and try and sound involved. On this final number the band members actually get to show some chops and some fire and it is really like a breath of fresh air (or maybe some creme caramel after a heavy and ordinary Mexican meal to conclude my metaphor.) (Worst line on the album....and worst metaphor imaginable Shake Shake Mama like a ship going out to sea...I mean what the fuck???)

Anyway, I listened to this thing about four times straight going and coming to Rosie's graduation (can you believe Tweedy's Gurl is THAT old??) and while it gets slightly better on repeated listenings, it has little to recomment it other than it is another Dylan album and that is enough for most people. Some asshole DJ on XRT was saying it sold 125,000 copies and was the number one album in the country. He kept saying he couldn't figure out who was buying it since clearly 20 years olds weren't. What he seems to miss is that some 20 year olds are buying this and certainly the boomers come out of the music buying closet to buy a new Dylan no matter what. Bad rapping Dylan is easy as is being a hipster DJ and his insistance that the album couldn't be appealing to anyone that young and that old people don't buy music anymore was just plain insulting. (Those of you in Chicagco may kjnow the guy I am talking about, I can't ever remember his name and frankly don't want to.)

Glad I can finally chime in on this having given it a fair listen rather than the streams on the internet which never do anything justice.

    LouieB

Good review Louie but no love for "This Dream of You"?

Also what did you think in comparisson with Modern Times just out of curiosity.

  10. That's a good question. I figured they would start a lot earlier than 7am, unless both the Doobie and Allman Brothers are playing very short sets, each. The Dead should definitely be playing their normal length set.

I would imagine the doobie brothers get 40 min., allmans get at least an hour maybe an hour twenty.

    so mabye

    7-7:40 Doobies

    8-9:20 Allmans

    9:45-1:00 The Dead

So the broadcast won't start till midnight! For us Chicagoians.

I just finished listening to 05/05/09, the show was as good as I remembered. A few week starts and finishes but some great tunes. Highlights were Golden Road, Mr. Charlie, truckin, hell in bucket (although the placement sucked, second time ive seen a second set bucket).

The highlight though was the weather report suite hot dam! Do you have a copy of 5/4 calvino?

  11. We can secure it viw military actions right now, but for how long?

Where I live it is a combination of him being black (a major factor as I have heard the word ni66er more in the last year than I had in the past 20) but being democrat is a biggie for the hard core right wing. They not only hate Obama and everything he does and stands for, but they hate Kennedy, Durbin, Reid, Pelosi any time democrats are talked about it is with venom. Hate is a pretty strong word but I think it may be mild down here in rural central Illinois.

Oh, Im not denying the hate but you have to wonder where there information is coming from. I would imagine right wing talk shows and fox news, as we can remember from the Bush years these sources aren't very factual. They are playing the left right paradigm.

ETA: I also think the whole playing up of him being black is going to hurt this country in the long run. Many people don't want to believe the awful truth of how racist this country still is. I think its amazing that he got elected but when you look at the electorate map, he won states that have mostly gone to democrats. When a black candidate wins texas and states south of the mason dixon line I'll be impressed.

  12. I think there is ignorance on both sides of this argument. To think that those in power are not trying to restructure our world for what they deem "better efficiency" is ignorant. To think that every major news story is somehow connected to this "plot" is also ignorant.

World Order is the structure of the world we live in, as times change there is always going to be a "New World Order" that is why you hear the phrase used so often.

To assume that those in charge are telling us everything going on behind closed doors is also ignorant. I posted this (Buying Brand Obama) in another thread but thought I should post it again. Those on the left who were seduced by obama's charm have been effectively dumped in favor of Bush term III (except this time there is the support of the American people). I'd say its fairly apparent from the little differences between that exist between democrats and republicans that there is a set direction this country is taking and there really are no "mavericks" in either party. Those who are are no where near party leadership.

  13. i caught the tail end of The Eleven> Touch of Grey, but here's the setlist someone posted on the chat after the show:

after the show, they streamed the unaired Sunshine Daydream from David Letterman!

Damn, I didn't get to watch any of it, but I'm glad someone got to enjoy it. If I was in the crowd I'd have been going nuts during that encore.

I wonder if the person will rig this up again for the Thursday show (same venue), don't think I'll be able to watch it though just picked up tickets to see Mike Watt. Either way Saturdays show (the last one till Rothburry) will be broadcast on sirus. The show starts at 7 seattle time and is a triple bill doobie brothers, allmans, the dead. I don't know if their broadcasting everyone but I'd love to hear the allmans set as well.
