  1. I know i'm gonna receive a beating but does anyone else think an extended break from touring wouldn't be a bad idea (if this rumor is indeed false). Watching clips from farm aid it just seemed like the band was going through the motions.

    I

  2. I think it's a fine choice. So they're looking to the future, making an investment, counting on him living up to his potential on the world stage, even throwing down the gauntlet and challenging him to do better. The Cairo speech was a big part of this no doubt.

There's my optimistic, naive take. Y'all are crazy cynical.

If I lived in Afghanistan would I be cynic? How about Palestine? Maybe Honduras? Of what if I was from Cuba? Maybe Venezuela? Guam? How about if I needed health insurance? What if I was Gates? What if I was Kanye West? What if I lived in Pakistan?

  3. Me too. This seems really really early. They should be giving the prize to someone who has actually done something. Sort of Weird really.

This on the same morning that an article in the Trib indicated that an Israeli-Palestinian peace was a long way off.

Weird is an understatement. I threw up a little this morning.

  4. Since we are all buying shit on line tonight...(see Coltrane thread..)....

What difference does it make if it is shit or not? I was sort of down on it initially too, but doing it for charity, what the hell. It will be worth a chuckle or two even if it does suck. (Remember This Old Man from "For Our Children"?? Well maybe not if you didn't have kids 20 years ago....)

I had that as a kid and still play that track for people......classic.

  5. ^^I can see what you mean^^ but sometimes a man's gotta wallow in it.

But like I was just saying your not wallowing in "it" your wallowing in their "it" which more then likely is a lot different from your situation. Which potentially can ruin any chances of fixing your problems because neil young has screwed with your perspective.

  6. Kind of Blue is an anything album.

It's too damn wonderful to classify as music for one particular mood.

And I kind of agree with you. "Break up" music can put things in perspective, but it's obviously dark and depressing music for the most part. More darkness and depression is probably not a good idea.

I wasn't saying that "Kind Of Blue" is break up music, like my post said the best music for emotional trauma is something that takes you out of your surroundings, which will help put things in perspective.

I can't see how "blood on the tracks" is going to help anyone move on, except for Bob Dylan. The recording of that album (or many of the ones mentioned in this thread) helped the artist transcend their troubles. Maybe the best break up music is your own.

  7. No offense to Ben but......... Does anyone else feel that "break up music" is not what one needs immediately after the fact? I recently got in a serious fight with my other half and threw some music on after she left which I had to turn off. When I finally was relaxed the last thing I wanted to hear was some guy sing about his love problems that were nothing like my own.

The thing that soothes me after emotional trauma is something that takes me away from whatever I just went through. This sort of reminds me of when my Uncle passed away and I was looking for solace in my record collection but everything just sounded cliche.

So I guess what I'm getting at is that the best break up albums aren't break up albums, they're the ones that help you move on rather then dwell.

It may have been said but if I were you I'd throw on:

  8. and??? How is it???

So now a charity album can be listened to for free?

    LouieB

haha I'm sure its terribly awesome. I have no problem "stealing music" but I'm definitely going to make this my first "purchase" since "in rainbows". I wish more artists of dylans stature would do charity records or at least do the wilco thing and offer the option.

  9. This CD is for charity. He isn't making a penny off this. What is disgusting?

Maybe you misunderstood but I wasn't declaring horseshit over the charity move. I was crying horseshit over the partnership with bank being "ironic". Last time I checked banks haven't been looking out for those who will benifit from the sales of "Christmas in the heart"

  10. This post sums up my feelings nicely. It might just be "as close as you can get". There's only the X Factor missing (and we know what, or should I say WHO that is). ;)

As someone ( I think it was the David Kemper) once said, "being in the room with Jerry is a pretty damn nice place to be".

    You mean they I hope.

  11. I wouldn't go as far as calling the dude a "hack", but I do not get the whole DSO thing either. Like I wrote before, I only saw them once in the late 90's, so they were just starting out, but it was a bit boring. Obviously they have a bit of a following, so they must be doing something right. I would prefer to throw a tape on if I want to hear a particular Grateful Dead show. To each their own.

I haven't listened to either of the Further shows, yet.

I just find it to be insulting I guess, it seems Billy would agree from his comments on Jambase. There is more to the grateful dead then vocal phrasing and guitar tones. I just think its laughable that anyone could claim to "re-create the grateful dead experience". In a way its almost a knock at the dead in that "anyone could do it", as if there wasn't something special that took the music to the next level.

There just an over glorified bar band, that charges up to 40 dollars a head. If one were to say these guys "re-create" the experience, i would think they never actually got the music.

And I called John a hack because I don't see how there is any role for musical growth in the role he plays. He is an impersonator.

  12. Man, this thread has really lost steam. Hehehe.

I've been working like a dog since july thus my virtual disappearance.

I see no talk of the Further shows on here so I take it no one attended. I listened to a bit of Friday night but was thoroughly creeped out. I do not get the Fake Jerry (DSO) guy at all or why anyone would want to here some hack play with Jerry's tone and then mimic his vocals. I don't even feel like giving this clone a shot. Anyone else weired out by the whole thing?

  13. better than the 1985 interview in the early AIDS days when Neil said you wouldn't want some "faggot" bagging your potatoes and groceries

see "Neil Young Nation" by Kevin Chong, p. 171 (2005)

Wow, neil never ceases to amaze. At times he seems so dame open minded and then he says shit like that. I remember reading some other harsh anti-gay comments in "shakey" but then he went and did the song for "Philadelphia" with the profits being donated to a gay mens health center, maybe he realized how wrong he was.

  14. what was the standout DEAD show from this summer? i want to download one.

Well, there was only one summer show (rothbury). But from the spring tour I really enjoyed The second night at Worcester, I also liked both shows with branford sitting in (E. Ruthford).
