  1. Wow man....

The very fact of his election is a huge civil rights victory. No matter what you think about him, his politics, his year in office or anything else political, most of us who are a bit older could not have conceived of the Pres being of color 20 or 30 years ago. Perhaps it is even progress that you think there is nothing unsual about him being elected, but not even 50 yeara ago black (and some white) people were being killed simply for the right of blacks to vote, not mention eat, sleep, go to the bathroom, etc., (much less marry or even have sex with...)with white people. I suggest you read Taylor Branch's trilogy about the King years. The 1950s and 60s may seem like ancient history, but some of us remember them pretty clearly.

    LouieB

Lou, I agree it is unreal that he was elected. It says something about the American people, not the man. I could see some kind of celebratory concert having took place before he took office or right after. But its only a distraction at this point, we need to move on.

If you take the time took look at the report the ACLU put together you'll see that his record on civil rights is nothing to be celebrating. I'm not surprised to see Dylan playing the concert but Baez spoke a lot of shit about George Bush and like the report shows Obamas politics aren't much different when it comes to civil rights or war.

  2. @ one wing they should be fine, you may want to keep an eye on 13 year old though. There is lots of trouble and youngin could get into at the roo.

On another note I think this the first year with a lineup that doesn't make me want to go.

  3. So corporations are going to put up hundreds of millions of dollars to back a single candidate? Since corporations are only interested in their bottom line and their responsibility to shareholders, that seems like a foolish expenditure, especially if said candidate loses. As it stands now, corporations pretty much contribute equally to both parties. It doesn't make any sense for them not to.

To some extent this is true, but it simplifies the issue. I honestly think this will play the biggest part in smaller elections where contracts and permits can be stopped by local courts and governments.

  4. Corporate involvement could begin to slowly dissolve the foundations of democracy, with each election cycle increasingly succumbing to its influence.

I can see this but I still think that time won't be a factor. As Glenn Greenwald pointed out, they already did control our elections.

ETA: What he didn't point out and what scares me is this is bringing the dirty deeds out into the light and we're now going to consider them legal.

  5. I’m not particularly worried about how this decision will affect the immediate future, but ten, twenty years out, and the results could be disastrous.

Sorry I'm joining the conversation late, but what makes you think this won't have an effect next election?

  6. Four years ago my friend lent me Howard's book and it forever changed my worldview. Howard you will be missed.

Democracy Now! is running a great memorial for Zinn.

Haven't got to watch this yet but I know its going to be good.

  7. So, obviously these guys are great musicians. But the real question is "are they a novelty act?"

I don't know what about them would lead you to believe they're a novelty act, unless you don't believe humor belongs in music.

  8. He's probably the one that only paid around $400 for a ticket of course.

Haha, I was sort of thinking the same thing in a way. Its kind of weak when you hear how many celebs with these huge bank accounts were there yet the highest donation was'nt even about 5,000.

But really if you don't like them who cares? You can still respect their humanitarian efforts.

  9. Are they profiting off of his pain, or off of his talent?

I argue that it's the later. And, not knowing the band members, I would give them the benefit of the doubt that they are actually fans, who are stoked to be playing with the legend.

Nobody is a fan of the pain; they're fans of the music.

Actually your wrong on the last part. Lots of people LOVE pain, some of these people probably hate music. lol

But seriously your write they are profiting off of his talent, but would they be profiting if he weren't ill? I wasn't trying to say the guys in the band backing him weren't fans, I was mainly referring to his brother who was out of the picture until a few years ago. He is the one who put Roky on the road.

  10. Here's a pretty recent interview on who influenced his singing:

What were you hoping to sound like, in your early days, before you started belting it out yourself?

Otis Redding! But that was not in the cards for me, in the hand I was dealt. Neil Young, Bob Dylan, Paul Westerberg, the Beatles, Joe Strummer, Kinks. Not usually country guys, but John Prine maybe—guys who had to struggle with some limitations, I identified with them. Jonathan Richman, for instance. I’ve always liked the guys where you go, “He’s opening his mouth, I should pay attention.” When I’m on onstage, I’m supposed to be saying something to somebody.

Jeff your full of shit. These days I'd say he is a better singer then anybody he named (minus paul or john, lennon that is). I wouldn't even put him past to pull of some Otis Redding tunes.
