  1. Lou we must have been at the same show, I also caught the flatlander late on saturday. Excellent set.

While I agree about their later records not being quite as good as the first one, I really enjoyed "Hills and Valleys", some excellent song writing on there. Particularly the opening three tracks.

I just watched "Lubbock Lights" a few a nights ago (its available to rent on amazon), if you like these guys the film is a must see. Really cool documentary about their home town.

As for those wondering about Butch's solo material, GRAB IT, his songwriting is lyrically dense and very rewarding. His last one "war and peace" has some great stuff on it. Not to mention the guy is one hell of artist, his pen drawings are unreal, he does these futuristic landscapes, very cool stuff.

  2. After this, standards went by the wayside.

The difference here was this was the punch line to a forty year old joke. In the famous SF 65 press conference dylan is asked what product he would sell out for, his answer "ladies under garments". Pretty classy if you ask me and I hater our consumer culture.

Since my latest Wilco email tells me Pat and John were responsible for testing the roasts I can only assume the brews are weak and inoffensive (to the point, of course, of becoming offensive).

    FTW!

  3. Just listened to Phish's rendition of Little Feat's Waiting for Columbus, it was great. I think I liked it better than last years Halloween show. The horns sounded better as well as the added percussion. I am not too familiar with Waiting for Columbus, the last time I think I listened to it all the through was while I was camping during the Terrapin Station shows in WI.

THEY NAILED IT! So pissed I ended up bailing on these shows. Rest of the run ain't to shabby either. You can hear the feat prints all over some of this stuff like the "camel walk" or especially the "wolfman's" from the night before.

I've got tickets for 12/31 and couldn't be more pumped. Really hoping they keep "Fat man in the bathtub" in rotation".

  4. I grabbed the Cult Cargo Bahama's release a little while back. Killer from beginning to end. I too highly recommend digging into these releases.

And although not music there recent release of visual artist Al Jarnow's work is another awesome package. Really good doc on his career included.

  5. The thing that pisses me off most about this whole tea party thing is that their are really good reasons to be angry at the Obama administration and these shenanigans detract from those reasons.

To be honest I find the whole thing to be a fake movement that has been blown up by the media, mainly to detract from anything changing.

  6. perhaps my troll comment was reactionary, but i was prodded by your apparent declaration that these records were not 'close to good'

    zuma

    rust never sleeps

    freedom

    ragged glory

    harvest moon

i will totally agree that post-Rust Never Sleeps, the material is not nearly as strong overall as the previous work.

it was probably including Zuma in that category that got me going. that's my 2nd favorite NY record after OTB (well, probably tied w/ TTN and TFA).

Word. I prefer the older recordings of the "rust" stuff. Zuma is indeed a great record.

Not a fan of "harvest" although I do like: One Of These Days, Old King and the title track.

Ragged Glory had potential but I hate the back up vocals on the record.

  7. 'regardless of what i meant' :lol

Maybe arguing about music online is like dancing about architecture.

    Could be :)

I was just trying to see why it would make someone a troll for not like his releases there after. I mean I know people who only like the crazy horse stuff and think "Harvest" is pop garbage, so what was all I was saying.

Like I said though, he has made lots of great music post Tonight's The Night and FTR I would say "Rust" was the last close to good album.

ETA: Your calling me a troll didn't seem like you "realize that taste is subjective"

  8. @vacant

I think "easy answers" got its due on the Rob Wasserman "Trios" album. I really like that recording with him and neil young.

    +_+_+_+_+_+_+_

Have you guys listened to the warlocks box yet? I've only checked bits and peices but really liked the Playin>UJB>Playin

  9. his fan base is incidental to the records he has released, they are not linked or have any impact on the material he's recorded.

neil's career would the be same if he sold a single copy of each release, that his mom bought.

don't get smug if you can't handle basic communication.

I believe you were the one who referred to me as a troll because my response didn't sit well you.

  10. you replied to qualifier 'close to good,' which you now are equating with 'great.'

make up your mind. they have substantial differences in interpretation.

Okay mom. Tonight's The Night was the last great album he made. "Rust never sleeps" was the last close to good album but some of those songs were five years old already upon release.

ETA: Not to mention I don't think that would be an invalid opinion (re:thinking tonight's the night was his last 'close to good album'). Were talking opinions here.

Regardless of what I meant, who gives a shit if someone though the records after "tonight's the night" weren't close to good? I can't understand why that would matter to you?

  11. wow.

yeah, i'd be hard pressed to find a 'close to good' record among his post-1975 work...i was gonna post a list but figured why feed an obvious troll.

Right......because I don't have a popular opinion I'm a troll? I don't see your logic. I didn't say the guy hasn't produced some good songs or good albums, I'm just saying I think that was the last "great" record he did. Dare I say, close to perfect.

  12. That's a rilly long time ago.............

    LouieB

Yup. I just think there have been weak spots in just about everything he has done since then. Obviously there have been a lot of great tracks and some good live material, nothing comes close thought (IMO) to the work done from the Springfield years to Tonight's The Night.

On an unrelated note. I really wish he had recorded this new record with Crazy Horse, seems a damn shame that he went heavy again without them.

  13. i kind of love the new meters!

in any case, i always thought he was a great lover of the city.

Funny I was talking about Daley with someone yesterday and they said the same thing (re:meters). They are more convenient, I just wish the city was making the money off them.

Who ever replaces Daley is screwed though due to the budget, which is why I think Rahm won't be running for the position (plus I don't want him here anyway).

  14. Looking forward to tonight's Hartford show, but reading that phantsy tour site reminds me that these Phish tours are fodder for some bonafide creeps. Makes Wilco fans look so normal!

Don't bother with phantasy tour. Phishthoughts.com there is great intelligent conversation in the comments section everyday. Come join us!
