  1. In both APA and MLA, book titles are italicized, but underlining is an acceptable alternative, especially when using a typewriter.
  2. Didja read the hate mail section? That's even better.
  3. I was going to ask for that, but it was cut from the list to make room for Sledgehammer: Season 2 and the complete series of Police Squad!
  4. Califone - Roots & Crowns. Just picked it up yesterday, and am listening while stringing lights on the Christmas tree.
  5. I believe deeply in the virtue and importance of quality criticism. But at the same time, I have little patience for reviewers who substitute dismissive, snarky witticisms for critical perspective. That's not consumer protectionism, that's self-aggrandizement, and it has little to do with real criticism. When I read a piece of criticism, I'm searching for thoughtful perceptions--pro or con--that are rooted in knowledge and sound musical theory, not in some cynical, pathetic desire to score points with the hipster crowd (or any other crowd). The best critics, to my mind, help illuminate a
  6. Perhaps he simply adjusted for the fact that he was talking to a British publication.
  7. I caught the Milwaukee show too, and took along a friend who previously had limited exposure to MMJ. At five separate points he turned to me and said, "Holy. Balls." It was indeed a great show.
  8. Can't believe I'm going to miss you! Can't believe Wilco is coming to SE WI and I can't make it!
  9. I pre-ordered through CD Baby a few weeks ago, and am eagerly anticipating its arrival. The few tracks I've already heard certainly did not disappoint.
  10. When I read the headline this afternoon, my heart skipped a beat. Over the last fifteen years, few filmmakers have meant more to me, or been a more personal face of American cinema to me. We have lost one of our vital voices.
  11. I can't tell you how many times that advice has kept me out of harm's way.
  12. I like Common. I have never been in a Gap store, but I think I will try it now.
  13. This is the first thing you've ever said that disappointed me. But I still love ya.
  14. That's impressive, but it'd be more impressive if he could actually finish it.
  15. Except that Cohen's satirical method is to engage in over-the-top prejudice in order to expose the folly of prejudice.
  16. Don't know if this has been posted already, but I thought some of you would get a kick out of Office Space recut as a thriller.
  17. Kael is two. Tonight, I was watching Sunken Treasure when she came running into the room and said, with perfect articulation, "Ah, Jeff. Tweedy." I looked at my wife, and she just started laughing. We have no idea how she knew that. Osmosis, I guess.
  18. Same here. I feel very strongly about the gay marriage ban--not to mention that other regressive move, the death penalty question--but I also didn't expect it to be rejected, so I wasn't too disappointed. I still felt energized about the elections overall. Thank God Mark Green was sent packing... And I think I danced a little jig upon hearing about Rumsfeld. It was crazy.
  19. Yeah... normally I wouldn't even consider missing a Wilco show in Madison, but serious family obligations are probably going to prevent me from going.
  20. If news coverage is a form of political capital, then this move steals some capital from the gloating Democrats. The press were talking strictly about Democrat victories; now they have to allot room to cover a Bush move that, while desperate, can be spun as "positive."
  21. "Gypsy! Give me your tears. If you will not give them to me, I will take them from you! Who is this lady you have shrunk?"
