  1. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Second_World Maybe we should get rid of the second world category as it is and promote all the third world countries.
  2. Are there any second-world countries left? Cuba and China?
  3. They buy 3 million tickets every year. I don't think it's their job to fundraise.
  4. Right. They are only closing certain locations for now.
  5. I wasn't directing my post at anyone in particular. I was reacting to comments I had read here and elsewhere. Part of the appeal of democracy (and hopefully they will have it) is that no one knows what will happen. There's a lot of space for imagination and possibility. Would you prefer that the Egyptian people were still saddled with Mubarak?
  6. Enjoy the moment, people. All of a sudden everyone's a hardened expert on Egyptian politics. They threw the bum out. Hopefully he doesn't get the billions he's rumored to have transferred out of the country. Sure, it may turn out badly, but no one knows. They have a right to self-governance and many people seem to resent the Egyptian people for asserting that right.
  7. It would seem that Young's career stats have been padded by playing in Arlington. He has a career OPS of .733 on the road. .679 on the road last year. I think Texas would have to pay for 2 years if they traded him for middling prospects. Then again, the Angels took on almost the entirety of that Vernon Wells contract, so I guess there's no saying.
  8. Happy birthday, Donna! I'm glad to hear your dad is doing better. You are the captain of VC's hospitality committee.
  9. I don't know anything about Yasser Arafat's daughter, but hope that I would consider her on her merits. I don't consider Wayne Madsen quoting unnamed sources as authoritative. Let's say he's right, though, for the sake of argument. I don't agree with violence of any kind, whether conducted by or committed on soldiers and civilians. However, if Benjamin Emanuel was blowing up British policemen and soldiers in Palestine, he could be considered by many to be an anti-colonialist freedom fighter. Note that the British officers were being transferred from India, another former colonial strongho
  10. This article is more than kind of icky. It's icky that you posted this.
  11. I missed the story about Gil Meche retiring http://www.npr.org/blogs/thetwo-way/2011/01/27/133277501/gil-meche-gave-up-12m-because-it-was-the-right-thing-to-do-could-you
  12. Not that I'm an expert, but the Cardinals, White Sox, and Astros are the teams I often see mentioned as having the barest organizations. At least the White Sox seem to have drafted or developed a couple good players over the last couple of years (Dan Hudson, Chris Sale, Gordon Beckham) after years of striking out.
  13. Have we talked about how bad that Jays-Angels trade seems for the Angels?
  14. The feds get their guy. I doubt he'll get off lightly.
  15. Well, you actually have to sign up for Hulu Plus or whatever to watch that, but you can watch Netflix, iTunes podcasts, and all sorts of things.
  16. Enjoying our new Roku box. Flying through Just Kids (Patti Smith) and slogging through Waiting For Godot in Sarajevo (David Toole).
  17. IIRC, Uribe wasn't charged with killing anyone. Just shooting.
  18. Well, aren't most of them connected with the bad economy?
  19. What's amazing is that Lee apparently turned down an additional $50 million from the Yanks and maybe the Rangers. He's not going to make that money back when this new contract ends at age 37.
  20. Am I waiting for the uncovering of simple paths between the branches a flowering chance fence slats rattling fingers pushing through slowly brushing past a fast glimpse of you
  21. Red Sox sign Carl Crawford - 7 years, $142 million. Highest paid outfielder ever. That lineup should be scary-good.
  22. I'd like to point out that most of this argues against buying (not reusing) fake trees.
