  1. Look forward to reading your recap of SBS in due time (and seeing your photos, of course)! For what it's worth, I finally got around to finishing my blathering about the final night so anyone's who's interested can check it out above...
  2. Glad we finally got to meet in person, Tim! Thanks for flagging me down. And yeah, I thought it was an excellent YLT set given they only had 75 minutes and were playing for a festival crowd.
  3. JamBase sometimes cares, but only about the bust outs...you know how it goes. So thank you for being a loyal audience no matter how mediocre the material. Re: the mezcal tasting, I only walked by briefly so can't truly attest — not to mention that the mezcal I've had in the past tasted like petrol to me — but I'm sure plenty of imbibing was done in my stead. Anyway, messiness is a decidedly relative thing at these sorts of all-inclusives.
  4. And in case anyone cares, here was the complete set played by Yo La Tengo that preceded Wilco's performance: Tom Courtenay Green Arrow From A Motel 6> Mr. Tough Ashes Big Day Coming (acoustic) I'll Be Around For You Too Autumn Sweater Drug Test Double Dare Little Honda [The Hondells] -------------------------------- Griselda [Holy Modal Rounders}
  5. I was all prepared to write about how there's always a little bit of anti-climax leading into the final night of a multi-night Wilco run, especially one with no repeated songs, because you can usually figure out about half the setlist based on what's already been played at the previous shows. But then an older gentleman in the audience apparently fell and hit his head following the first song of the encore and the ensuing medical response brought the show to a complete halt for approximately 10 minutes as the band left the stage so the man could be attended to. When Jeff and his bandmates di
  6. Indeed, I'm looking forward to getting a few days to explore in Ciudad de México. Never been before. Thanks for the advice about the museum. Shall try to get over there one day. Do you remember if everything was just in Spanish there in terms of the signage? I always worry about going to museums in foreign countries where I don't speak/read well enough to comprehend sans translation. Anyway, yes, Mexico must be amazing in terms of archaeology. I'm sure there's still some crazy stuff waiting to be unearthed...
  7. Actually, as Jeff briefly alluded to during the Tweedy set, that actually wasn't his first performance of the day. Earlier, he had graciously stopped by to play a short solo set for a small group of folks who were part of a “day of service” at a site about 15 miles away from the Hard Rock Hotel that was organized by Positive Legacy, a non-profit organization that works with the organizers of Sky Blue Sky. Basically, a small group of festival attendees had the chance to visit the nearby Playa Xcacel and its adjacent turtle sanctuary and do small projects like beach cleanup, road repair, sign pa
  8. Yeah, guess you’re right about the spelling. As for the floater, I can’t say.
  9. Well, my dream of seeing Jeff perform while floating in an ocean lagoon was dashed when Sky Blue Sky organizers made the decision to move the Tweedy band's afternoon set from the Heaven Beach stage to the Stairway To Heaven stage because of concerns about the weather. Maybe it wasn't really a dream, but when the SBS schedule got announced, I have to admit I was kind of looking forward to the ridiculousness of it all. Calexico in the lagoon playing its dusty Southwestern, horn-accented tunes...yes. The Tweedy band in the lagoon with songs about dead parents and drug addiction...uhh.
  10. They didn’t have the European guys with them, so no Martin Wenk and no Jairo Zavala (does he still play with them?) So the lineup for SBS was Joey and John plus Jacob Valenzuela, Sergio Mendoza, Brian Lopez on guitar plus a bass player (not sure if it was Scott Colberg or someone else) and another trumpeter I didn’t recognize.
  11. I definitely get that, but as I said, I guess I would be a little chagrined if I had come from out of town to go to multiple Winterlude shows, for instance. Also, as I’ve suggested, a decent portion of the crowd here seems made up of people who might like Wilco fine but are more interested in a resort vacation with music (and free booze, etc.). Just from general observation, the level of Wilco fandom seems not quite as serious as at, say, Solid Sound or even Winterlude. Personally, I think there’s at least a little thought in terms of doing the completely no repeats shows in Mexico this tim
  12. I would be surprised if he didn’t, but where I was standing the speaker was so loud that I really couldn’t tell! So thanks for the confirmation.
  13. Where to start with a recap of the second of three Wilco sets at the inaugural Sky Blue Sky Festival? With the three-song wallop of a start? With the appearance of a true rarity in That's Not The Issue? With the delightfully rocking encore pairing of Monday and Hoodoo Voodoo, which began fittingly with the count-in (yay!) and ended with a fiery guitar duel between Nels and Pat? Take your pick, I suppose, or pick one of the other unique occurrences that made for another memorable seaside show on the Yucatán Peninsula. One could talk about the relatively brief, but drenching, rain shower that
  14. For anyone who cares, here was Courtney Barnett's setlist for her solo SBS performance preceding Wilco's set: Avant Gardener Need A Little Time Nameless, Faceless Dead Fox Walkin' On Eggshells Elevator Operator Not Only I [seeker Lover Keeper] Sunday Roast Everybody Here Hates You Let It Go Depreston new song-Every Day I Wake Untitled (Play It On Repeat) Being Around [The Lemonheads] Dawned On Me [Wilco] ("country version") History Eraser
  15. Well, that was something. Wilco certainly made its first show of the decade (and first on Mexican soil) one for the books by basically throwing out much of the Ode To Joy tour playbook in favor of some relatively deep cuts and old-school tunes geared toward a festival crowd at a beachfront resort. For whatever reason, the band chose to play a few songs for the first time since BTH (Before The Hiatus) and several others that have been very sporadically played over the past four or five years. Some were pretty natural fits for this type of setting (Secret of the Sea, I Must Be High), while oth
  16. From a recent Wilco tweet... Chicago 2017 includes 14 new arrangements of Johnston's beloved songs (& a Beatles cover). Nine are performed live at @TheVicChicago with Tweedy (@JeffTweedy, @spencertweedy, James Elkington, @darin_gray & @liamkazar), and five are from the previous day’s session at The Loft.

    Wilcopedia

I got the book a while back (gotta keep tabs on the existing literature...haha) and it’s basically a song-by-song compendium of everything the band has put out. And I mean everything, including the Wilco Book tracks and every cover they’ve done and even every TV or DVD appearance by the band. Each entry is basically a roundup of facts about the song, anything Jeff has said about it at a live show, existing criticism and other primary sources. All of that is spun into a little blurb about the track that’s fairly well written, I have to say. The author doesn’t inject a lot of his own opinions, a
  18. For anyone who cares, which I imagine is down to about 10 people or so (especially during this holiday week), I finally got around to finishing my recap of the final night of Winterlude 2019. Anyway, it's now posted above. Happy holidays to y'all. :santa
  19. I’m in transit till later today, but I won’t let this one slip away...
  20. You know, I honestly had forgotten that this fourth and final show of Winterlude 2019 was being aired live on WXRT (and live-streamed via the Radio.com app) until Jeff mentioned it about two thirds of the way through Wilco’s set. "Oh yeah, we’re on the radio right now everybody," Jeff said as Nels was being handed the gaudy, double-neck white guitar he uses on Dawned On Me. "And (the radio audience) can’t see that thing, which is a good thing." So I was trying to think of what else noteworthy I could describe that might have been lost on those listening in at home, and I came up with two of
  21. Or Jay Farrar? No, I doubt it was either of those guys (though anytime the name Jay gets mentioned by Jeff, I'm sure that's what some people are thinking). For one, Jeff said, "We're happy he's here," when making the dedication, so unless he was referring to Bennett's ghost, I don't think it was him...
  22. That's my alter ego, actually. He's much more of a pop fan than I am, and also a lot more tolerant...hence the "good" review of the venue. Hey man, wish you would have. Even though we apparently disagree about baseball teams, I think I'm generally pretty friendly in person. I get it about the social anxiety, though. I'm pretty terrible with faces, though usually decent with names so it can take me a little bit to place them if we've met before, which always makes me slightly anxious socially. For instance, I felt like an ass last night when Sima said hi — we know each other a little bit — a
  23. Ok, I’ve reconsidered and maybe the Chicago Theatre isn’t such a bad place for Wilco show after all. Actually, that’s what I was getting at the other day — or trying to, anyway — when I suggested that the iconic venue is a perfectly adequate locale for the band’s Winterlude residency. Depending on where you’re seated and who’s seated around you, I believe the phrase I used was "generally tolerable." Would it be my first choice? My reply is no. Will there ever be a barnburner of a Wilco show there? Don’t count on it. Could there be worse venues? Signs point to yes. And lastly, O Wise Magic 8-Ba
