A million times better than Williamsburg! maybe the best wilco show i have seen....

I would agree with that. Either Way is a very pretty song, very nice. Walken is by far better than the fall versions. Alternating guitar solos on Hoodoo. The best crowd interaction ever. Oh yeah, Wilco will be coming back to C'ville. Nels screaming back at the crowd. That's the Cliff Notes version for now. I'll give a full review and pictures tomorrow night. Talk about a fantastic weekend.

Was gonna start a thread on this. Do you people never sleep? :D

'Teh' Wilco

@ the big Scream Reflector: (C,ville 4/23)

You could earnestly start things off by saying this is arguably the best live rock band in the country right now. You could make reference to the musical prowess of the collective members, point out Tweedy's obviously matured confidence on guitar and the development of his own ragged style. Single out Nels Cline and his mad genius, who's mastership and unique eclectic approach is not only stunning in it's self but is so utterly complimentary that one walks away thinking that songs that were originally composed seven or eight years ago were written with him in mind.

I would be remiss if I didn't attempt to recall the set list. I'm awful at this: Forgive me. We started with Via Chicago. Somewhere along the way we encountered Handshake, Walken, Kingpin, Airline to Heaven, the Good Part, Hoodoo Voodoo, Late Greats, Hummingbird; (yeah there was a little kid in the audience who's presence Tweedy noted and yea, Jeff did the dance thing) Theologians, Hell is Chrome, Jesus etc, I'm Trying to break your heart, ALTWYS and more; (Spiders is all new to me again. What fun THAT was)!

It was, the last show of the tour, what tour I'm not exactly sure. "Ghost", "Kicking Tele"? Whatever...It was my first Wilco show. "Cherry".

I can go buy Kicking Television now having seen the band. It'll be a poignant reminder of last nights performance.

The band looked to be having a great time. Sansone was throwing stuff at some guy hidden behind a cabinet next to Kotche's kit, who speaking of is probably the best drummer I've ever witnessed, period. The "shout louder than Nels" thing during Kingpin was fun: Nels, you got nothin!

Walking away, it occurred to me what a great crowd it was and I was proud, yes PROUD of my home town and all of its adopted residents who attended. If you were present last night, you done good;( Even the kid behind me who kept yelling "Candyfloss" throughout the whole night. Without him there would of been something missing and in that absence we would've been left with something not quite fulfilled). I laughed at and mocked the drunk kid in the alley way, pissing against a wall mumbling incoherently to himself. The headlights of an oncoming car having illuminated not only his figure but apparently his self consciousness.

I can go on, I wont. It was great.

Jeremy it was nice seeing you again. Gimmie a hollar the next big local show.

i agree. w&m was my first wilco show, and i left thinking it was great, listened to wilco on the whole drive back to cville. but the whole setting in cville, great town, great night (weather was absolutely perfect), great crowd, plus a better set with more energy..... hands down best show ive ever seen. :worship

If anyone finds a torrent of this show available, make sure you let eveyrone know.

Hands down the best show I have EVER seen, and this is my 21st Wilco/Tweedy show.

Agreed that this was a performance to remember, the best performance I've seen in the post-Leroy era (out of 5). The AGIB songs were masterfully performed. They gave a couple nods to the country crowd, esp. at the outset with Airline and then "Flowers" later on. And the dueling guitar solos (three-way, with Pat included) on Hoodoo to close out the night was cool to see. The audience participation was really very good, the UVA students didn't ruin things, maybe that's because it wasn't on campus?

There were multiple tapers set up dead-center about 20 rows back, and I was standing nearby and thought the sound setup last night was excellent, so I'm anticipating a good bootleg will emerge in the near future.

Finest Wilco show I've seen. Plenty of highlights to mention. I'd seen a ho-hum version of Hoodoo Voodoo about a year ago, but this one was exceptional. The 3 guitar attack was pretty exhilarating. Tweedy was playing a couple of nice little solos and then played a pretty weak one. Pat, Jeff, and Nels all started laughing and then Pat and Nels kind of picked up on the riff that Jeff had played and then they ran with that. It was just impressive to see such a talented band at work.

All of the new songs were much tighter than when I heard them last. Walken was especially impressive. The Good Part + Kingpin + Late Greats to finish the first encore was great. The crowd was all over Kingpin and the band was loving it.

Tweedy said something to the effect that it was the best participation they had all tour (maybe ever?), but said it was probably because of the 'scream reflector' (the show was in an outdoor pavilion). I have a feeling Wilco will be making it back through Charlottesville again. He mentioned a couple of times that Charlottesville 'made him feel safe.'

My only complaint, of course, is that they didn't play another 10 songs. I think the city probably has some tight regulations on how late concerts can go on Sunday night,

I'm a C-Ville local, and love Wilco though this was my first Wilco show. It was a great place to see them--the lovely night, open venue, super energy of band & crowd were perfect. I danced my heart out almost the whole show, the band were so solid and rocking and everything felt so connected. Really an inspiring night.

I've found C-Ville knows how to treat our musical guests in general. I saw The Silver Jews about a month ago in a smaller venue and band & crowd were equally mutually generous.

Here's hoping Wilco will come back 'round again.

I felt lucky to hear them play "Either Way" in KC about a month ago....was the first and only time I've heard it and I thought it was a stunning, beautiful tune.

Jealous that you guys go to see "Red-Eyed---I Got You". How does this new lineup's version compare to the Bennett-days versions?

so excited when they played 'the good part' and yes this version of walken is better. really good spiders, made me actually like this song. I think it just takes a little understanding to ge this one, its wilco's version of darkstar ( you know the grateful dead tune) My favorite line was during hummingbird jeff yelled, "come everybody, lets get some exercise" i thought that was great. THis crowd really was into it and not just wanting to stand around so all around really great show.

Great great show last night. I opted for Widespread Panic on Sat in Raleigh instead of Wilco at William & Mary but friends I was with said Cville show was far better than Wm & Mary. Besides me, there was one other taper actually running mics but he doesn't torrent stuff so I'll have mine up hopefully by tomorrow morning. Great energy at the show, a big crowd that was really into the show. I have seen a good number of shows at the venue (which just opened last year) and this was the BEST the sound had ever sounded in there. In fact, I saw Drive By Truckers & Robert Randolph & the Family Band there together Thurs night & the sound for Wilco was worlds better so Stan did a great job dialing it in.

CBD - were you wearing a green shirt, I think i was right behind you guys. I was the goofy long haired kid who asked you where you posted, glad to see you here. Pefect spot for sound quality. My roommate was saying how the show had the best vocal quality of any show he has been to, Jeff was sounding real good last night. I was wondering if you would like to do a B&P with me for this show since I am on a campus that doesnt allow me to torrent.

Hey everyone,

What a great, great show that was last night. I went into this weekend thinking of how often Wilco plays in N. Carolina and how infrequently in Virginia. I think the double shot of Williamsburg and C'Ville will no doubt have them returning much more often in the future. How about Richmond guys? Two great, appropriately-sized new venues coming soon. As for last night though, possibly best "Ghost" show I've seen, and I've seen many.

Moreso than Wilco playing better than usual, I think the nice, early summer outdoor venue with an incredibly enthusiastic crowd pushed this show over the top. We got five more songs than W'burg and from about the the halfway point of the main set, through the smoking 9-song encores, every song picked up more momentum. The band really fed off of the crowd who (once again Virginia) danced more than any Wilco show ever. I'm talking half of everyone down front really letting loose, especially on "Spiders," "HMD," 'Kingpin" and "Hoodoo." The triple guitar rock off between Nels, Pat and Jeff is not to be missed. I saw a taper and I'm sure this will be floating around soon, but really I hope someone got this on video as it was hysterical to watch.

"Walken" sounds better than ever and has definitely progressed since last fall. "Either Way" still needs some work from where I'm sitting, but may grow on me yet. John and Jeff both jumped all over the stage especially late in the second encore of "I Got You" and "Red Eyed." They looked like they had gotten out of a 1997 time machine. The whole band really left everything on the stage and I feel certain they will visit Charlottesville again in the not-too distant future. Great show guys, great show fans. See you all down the road,

Greg

OMG!

First off, let me say hi to Jimmy! It was great seeing you again and getting to talk to you.

In the last 4 years, I've seen some excellent shows (Auditorium, second night; Poughkeepsie, Bogart's). I don't think any of them could match last night's show. I truly believe the crowd had a lot to do with it. I've been to numerous shows in Charlottesville over the years and have dealt with the scenesters who decide a show is the best place to catch up and chat through the entire show. There was little of that last night. Just singing along for pretty much the entire show. I don't think I could accurately describe the intensity of the crowd's response. There was one point where it was so loud from the crowd that my ears were ringing. Holy cow. The band was in great spirits and that only improved as the night went along. So, thank you to the crowd at last night's show for making for an enjoyable night for all. Truly Wilco will be back in town.

The new songs: Either Way, like I said last night, very nice. If they recorded it tomorrow I'd be pleased with it. I think the song sounds exactly as it should. Walken, last fall-hohum, last night holy cow. I think Harey Carey would agree. If this is the way it sounds on the upcoming album, we're all in for a treat.

I can see this lineup around for awhile. It's great to see Nels goofing around. When he screamed back at the crowd last during Kingpin, it was hilarious. Hoodoo Voodoo and guitar solos. This is a band that has dropped the pretensions and is just having a great time together. My only complaint was that Mike was hidden. Bring the man out! Of course, the structure of the stage didn't make that easy.

Well, my stomach is growling, so i gotta wrap this up. Here's to good times. :beer

here's some additional thoughts:

1)French Toast: what a cool band. They played a fantastic set. Reminded me somewhat of Mission of Burma. I picked up the single last night.

2)Sorry to have missed you and your guy Sandi. Hope you guys had a great time!

Yes to the French Toast props--they were great. When they came on I was rationing my energy for Wilco so rather than talk or move about much I tapped in to their session and they were clearly wailing. One of the band members is a brother to a guy in Fugazi or something--I'm abysmal at details (remembering song titles, band member names, etc.) so I don't know who exactly but that's what a Plan 9 guy told me before the show. A little family news on the connections that undergird the world.

I also heard prior to the show that Wilco had spent a lot of time fine tuning the sound (tech) for the show. A friend advised that we stand right in front of the tech panel to enjoy the fruits of that. Sounded perfect to me. Also left plenty of room for dancing. Good to know so many folks were dancing up front---there should always be dancing at rocking shows, none of that holding back stuff. I didn't see the people down front but I was back there riding the wave, too.

I'm gonna give you all the full throttle newbie effect---what's a 'Ghost' show? And a cherry ghost?

You can rely on me...

I'd say A 'Ghost' show is one whose setlist draws primarily on that latest studio album.

For 'cherry ghost', that's up to your interpretation of the lyric. There was a thread about it once - you may be able to find it in the archives. I just let those sort of things swirl in my own head, without seeking out a definitive 'answer'. Only years and years later (and usually only with someone like the Beatles) would I actually be interested in finding out the real inspiration for a song lyric.

Edit: found it http://archive.viachicago.org/index.php?showtopic=10604&st=0

Not strictly that useful perhaps, but you'll have to get used to that here :D
