Jesusetc84
wowwhen i think of nirvana, one of hte last things i think of is their melody. westerberg was great at that. Well...maybe you don't listen enough. "About a Girl" is a better melody than anything Westerberg could ever muster. So is "Come As You Are". So is "In Bloom". That chorus is pure Beatlesque pop magic. Kurt is pretty reknown for his melodic ability...at least outside of this board :-P. I'm sorry...I just think as a whole this board gives Kurt no respect. Is Nirvana overrated? Sure. But worse than SOUNDGARDEN? PEARL JAM? I'm sorry, all of those bands are very heh...low on the quality rung imo. I listened to Ten yesterday, side by side with Nevermind. Nevermind still pleases. It still is jam packed with great tunes and melodies. I giggled through most of Ten. Edited September 27, 2006 by Jesusetc84
mjpuczko
i like nirvana quite a bit but to say kurt writes better melodies than westerberg is a bit ridiculous. anyway, neither of htem hold a candle to frank black.

How so? What does Westerberg have that holds a candle to "About a Girl" in terms of melodicism? Nothing to be quite frank. Most of The Replacements melodies are pretty average to me. "I Will Dare" is probably my favorite Westerberg melody, and even that, Is inferior to a good 5-8 Nirvana songs. eh personally Kurt > Frank (like a hair below Kurt) >>>>>>>>>Paul I got into The Replacements when I was 18, and Nirvana when I was 12. Nirvana still gets spins; The Mats don't. Not saying I'm the ultimate beacon of music...but that says something to me that an album I've listened to 1,500 times brings me more pleasure than one I've listened to like 150 times. I dunno. The Replacements wouldn't make my top 50 bands anymore. Nirvana'd make my top 20, The Pixies would make my top 20-25. I just don't think The Mats are in that league. mjpuczko
frank is probably the best melodic songwriter i've ever heard (well, besides the beatles). i've been listening to nirvana since 92 & i just started listening to black/pixies like 4 years ago. same with the mats/westerberg. most of nirvana's music bores me now. hell, i listen to the foo fighters way more than nirvana. I wouldn't call either one the king of melody, but I'll take Paul as the better songwriter. Hey, everyone's entitled to their opinion. Ten years ago I thought Kurt was a God and that Paul was decent. Now it's the other way around. I listen to Paul constantly and I barely ever listen to Nirvana.

What about Elvis Costello? Neil Young? Keith Richards/ Mick Jagger? Bob Dylan? Van Morrison? David Bowie? Michael Stipe/ Peter Buck? Joe Strummer? I'm not arguing that The Pixies are great, and to me, They're very close in terms of quality to Nirvana (basically on the same level.) I hate The Foo Fighters. Husker Du for frat boys I say :-P
mjpuczko
in my mind, frank's the best i've ever heard. yay! i'm a frat boy & i didn't know it.

Hey, everyone's entitled to their opinion. Ten years ago I thought Kurt was a God and that Paul was decent. Now it's the other way around. I listen to Paul constantly and I barely ever listen to Nirvana. I was slightly annoyed at how he acted like my opinion had no validity. The way he dismissed it. I wouldn't say Cobain was the King of melody, but I'd say when he wanted to, he spun out some melodies that much better songwriters would be proud of. It's worth noting that Paul McCartney counts "Lithium" among his favorite songs. Personally, I find validation in my Nirvana fandom, not from the critics (who do...overhype them a bit) but from the fact that Paul McCartney, Neil Young, Bob Dylan, and Elvis Costello have all made very favorable comments about Kurt. I think Paul McCartney and Elvis Costello especially, know a great song when they hear one, since both are melodic Gods. I really think The Replacements are just sort of this Mid-west legend that have been built up by their proponents to be larger than life; and I'm not just saying in terms of Nirvana. Forget about Nirvana for a second. I just think in general, The Mats were second tier 80s. Next to The Talking Heads, Sonic Youth, Pixies, Joy Division, New Order, Husker Du, The Smiths, and other 80's "alternative" bands, I think The Mats pale. Granted I would still rather listen to Paul crap in a can than spin Pearl Jam records. in my mind, frank's the best i've ever heard. yay! i'm a frat boy & i didn't know it. Frank is pretty fucking good. His genius is in taking a little melodic hook and sticking it deep in your brain. It doesn't hurt that he has Kim Deal singing back up. Hahaha, I was just busting dude. Though I drink like a fratboy, and a pirate.
bobbob1313
I've never listened to a full Mats album, but I will say they are better than Fall Out Boy.

mjpuczko
i wish i had paid more attention to frank black when he went solo. i remember hearing los angeles on beavis & butthead & really like it. pistolero might be in my top 10 fave albums ever.

bobbob1313
holy shit i can't even comprehend what i'm reading hereThe Foo Fighters best album is better than Nirvana's best album, with the possible exception of the unplugged album, but I'm not sure I consider that an album proper, since it is a live recording and not a studio recording. If we are to include Unplugged, then I would say that Unplugged is arguably better than the Colour and Shape, but that's about it.

parisisstale
I can't comment on The Colour and the Shape since I've never listened to the whole thing, but I can say that My Hero is one of my least favorite songs of all time.
