Yeah, I don't think Rob Z's gonna let us down.

Dude, have you seen the MTV Cribs of his house? He fucking loves the horror genre clear back to it's roots and it shows in his work.

The clips look like they've brought back the genuine darkness/scariness of the original.

I think they were sort of going for the philosophical nature of a 2001 with the action of an Aliens. It didn't quite get there on either account. Nevertheless it was a decent enough sci-fi film.

Yes! Did you ever watch First Person?

Unfortunately I never caught that series when it aired. I've seen most of Morris' other work--one of my favorite documentary filmmakers--so I'm definitely interested in seeing it. Hopefully I'll come across it at the Library or video store sometime.

How does this series rate with his film work?

Most of the episodes are as strong as his best feature work... I made a point of watching them when they originally aired, and then later I bought the complete series on DVD. If you're a Morris fan, it's absolutely worth tracking down.

Thought I'd pop in another Morris DVD last night.

One of the extras on the DVD was an episode of "First Person." Typical Morris... looks good :).

I remember that when I saw that in the theater, I was the only one there. Pity.

Somehow I had never seen it. I've known about it since it came out, but never searched it out. I'm glad I did. I've watched some good films lately. Green For Danger was really great. Picked up the new edition of Taxi Driver. Watched Treasure of the Sierra Madre again for the nth time. Superbad was fun. If is on its way. Looking forward to that.

EDIT-Donovan just came up on shuffle. Zodiac was excellent too.

Finished off the Beatles Anthology last night. It's funny to watch it with a casual Beatles fan such as m'lady.

She: "Is this where U2 got the rooftop concert idea?"

Me: "Umm, yeah. Yes. Of course. Wait - you've never seen this stuff? Like, ever?"

She: "Nope."

Me: "Wow!"

First time seeing this one in many years. The bonus disc has Linklater's earlier film It's Impossible to Learn to Plow By Reading Books which is an interesting adjunct to Slacker.

I saw that when it first came out, and have been a huge Linklater fan ever since--at this point, I'd describe him as one of the most vital voices in American movies. (Before Sunset is one my desert-island movies.) I'll have to check out the Criterion DVD, since I've been trying to track down It's Impossible... for years. I've never seen it. Speaking of lesser-known Linklater stuff, have you seen his short documentary Live from Shiva's Dance Floor? In that one, Linklater follows performance artist Timothy "Speed" Levitch on an off-kilter tour of NYC. The movie's most memorable bit consists of Levitch sitting on top of a giant bull, explaining how "BS" is the universal language--and certainly the fuel of this delirious movie--which transitions into his idea for a Twin Towers memorial: An open park populated by actual, grazing, symbolic bison.

Beltmann - have you ever seen The Newton Boys? It's the one Linklater film I haven't seen (for fairly obvious reasons).

Yeah... I thought it was crap. It isn't Linklater's only misstep--I also thought Bad News Bears, SubUrbia, and Fast Food Nation were mediocre or worse--but it's the most flabbergasting of his failures.

I'm fascinated by Cronenberg, but I wasn't keen on Shivers. For my money, it's his worst movie (excluding shorts like The Lie Chair and The Italian Machine). I know a lot of people would vote instead for Fast Company, and while it's certainly a poor movie, I still think Fast Company has certain virtues--especially the greasy details of drag strip life, and the way motors are used as a metaphor for how the human body functions and needs repair.
