Mrs. Peel
I know, but they should have been! Our legal department goes apeshit if an image of a lighter on a package is lit. They don't want people to misunderstand and think that the lighter should be used to set the package on fire!
c53x12
Although in retrospect it looks like a big freakin' overreaction, it's a tough position for the authorities. If it turns out to be nothing they look stupid, and if they ignore it and it turns out to be real, they look stupid.True, or if they just quietly remove the items without it becoming a media circus, they don't look stupid. caliber66
I'm sure the marketing and legal departments are making a tour of Turner Broadcasting's hq, showing off their brand new assholes. True, or if they just quietly remove the items without it becoming a media circus, they don't look stupid.True, and if they are bombs, and one goes off while they are "quietly" removing it from a bridge during rush hour, they end up smelling like roses. Sir Stewart
or they could have made a calculated risk and assumed all the bad publicity and wrist slapping might be worth it in the end...I'm thinking this, too. They were probably waiting for this very thing to happen.

owl
I agree about Turner being jackasses. They should be forced to pay fines and any legal fees to defend the people they paid to do this. On the other hand, though, I think that the "terrorists have won" here. There is a Terror War at hand- and it is aimed both at fighting terrorism, but also ensuring that Americans are scared enough to continue to support it.
WilcoFan
Read the cnn article it's hilarious: Article In a news conference, Rich told reporters he had advised his clients not to discuss the incident. Stevens and Berdovsky took the podium and said they were taking questions only about haircuts in the 1970s. When a reporter accused them of not taking the situation seriously, Stevens responded, "We're taking it very seriously." Asked another question about the case, Stevens reiterated they were answering questions only about hair and accused the reporter of not taking him and Berdovsky seriously. Reporters did not relent and as they continued, Berdovsky disregarded their queries, saying, "That's not a hair question. I'm sorry."
owl
Well, ATHF sure got some publicity out it. It will just wind up being really, really expensive publicity.Maybe Turner will fight the fees and make the taxpayers pay for it, thus making people more reluctant to report possible threats? Boston Police Commissioner Edward Davis called the stunt "unconscionable," while Boston Mayor Thomas Menino called it "outrageous" and the product of "corporate greed." Democratic Rep. Ed Markey, a Boston-area congressman, added, "It would be hard to dream up a more appalling publicity stunt." Hooo boy. Yes. This is the most unconscionable, worst stunt imaginable. More appalling, even, than a giant hardcore porno billboard. The cops/mayor/others are just trying to save face now.
cryptique
Nobody panicked in at least nine other cities where these "devices" have been installed for weeks now. So ... how, exactly, is it "unconscionable" only in Boston? The terrorists have already won.

uncle wilco
f*ck you boston! who'd wanna blow you up anyway? [just kidding] did anyone end up asking a question about haircuts of the 1970's? if memory serves me correct, it wasn't uncommon to wash the hair only 2-3 times a week and haircuts were only sought about every other month or two at the very most. hair length cut shorter than mid-ear was considered "selling out to the man" and blow-dryers were used equally by males and females. i've got pictures to prove it...somewhere.... owl
I'd probably pay $100 for one, no more.Figure, they'll probably go down in value, as ATHF fades into obscurity. The show isn't even that good anymore anyway (but the first season was excellent).
