truetolife
Today looks like a good day for leaks so far, I've seen Son Volt's "The Search" and Charlie Louvin's new album (formerly of the Louvin Brothers), Charlie's album features appearances by Jeff Tweedy and Will Oldham. I'm sure you all know where to look.
TCP
Wasn't Charlie Louvin's new album already out for like a week?
TheMaker
You could've knocked me over with a feather after I finished listening to The Search earlier today. It's such a great little record, with a beautiful flow and nearly every song sounding like a highlight. I thought I liked Okemah well enough, but this blows it away. I'm so glad to see Jay finally reaching past the alt-country ghetto and trying something familiar but just a little bit different. There's a real southern-pop feel to some of these songs that reminds me a little of R.E.M. in the early '90s. Lots of variety, too, with piano, memphis horns, backwards guitars, and so forth. Already my favourite SV since Trace.

It's very bright and stretches his vision out. Like it a lot.

SarahC
the single they're playing on the WAWL is really great. I love the horns!

nettles
The title track is the Jam! almost as Jamming as 'Drowmnnyour Cousin Itt" I didn't think I'd ever care for buying a son volt record again.

WilcoFan
Today looks like a good day for leaks so far, I've seen Son Volt's "The Search" and Charlie Louvin's new album (formerly of the Louvin Brothers), Charlie's album features appearances by Jeff Tweedy and Will Oldham. I'm sure you all know where to look. I heard a track from the Sun Volt album today on the radio. It definitely sounded more country (real country, not present day Eagles-Nashville country)and not so much alt-country. I liked what I heard.
Spawn's dad
I'm surprised to say so, but it's a really good album. A song about meth with slide work makes it aces in my book.

And when did "alt-country" become uncool? I just can't keep up these days. Regardless, I definitely like this new SV.
fortuneinmyhead
I wonder if there will ever be threads titled "albums, not leaked!" probably not
Leo
Man I am so behind the times.....didn't he do this already?? LouieB To me, everything he did post Trace was a bit of a letdown because Trace was such a fresh, singular release. He has finally relocated the musical mark he lost after Trace, with the Search! imsjry
To me, everything he did post Trace was a bit of a letdown because Trace was such a fresh, singular release. He has finally relocated the musical mark he lost after Trace, with the Search! See, I find Trace to be his most uninteresting release. Has it always been this highly regarded? Everyone always seems to point to Trace as Jay's masterpiece or something. I just don't get it. I'd much rather listen to any of his other releases. To me, Trace is like his "A.M." Good songs, but doesn't get much play because of how much better his later stuff got. I can't wait to her this new disc.

While I tend to agree, I can see why it wouldn't be everyone's cup of tea, but not to the point where I would agree that it's on par with A.M., though - which is a fine album in its own right, but there's absolutely no comparison. Spawn's dad
While their overall catalogue is better than Jay's, I still think trace is better than any single wilco album.
quarter23cd
And when did "alt-country" become uncool? I just can't keep up these days. When was it cool? I used to get lots of puzzled looks from friends in college when I first got into UT/SV/Wilco. I'd imagine that "southern pop" is probably similar to "alt-country" except that it might be ok to smile once in a while. As for Trace, I dunno if its a "masterpiece"--it has that feel to it, even tho there are a few songs I never cared for much--but I think its overall the best thing he's done post-UT (tho I still prefer those albums). cryptique
When was it cool?To the mainstream morons, never. But even people who used to love "alt-country" seem to shy away from that term now.
Calexico
Labelling music sucks mostly but for the want of a better term for describing to someone what you listen to I suppose you must use some sort of terminology. I usually just say American music or rootsy music. Or just tell people to fuck off. That works too.
