Guest Jules
You're completely missing the point. The list is underappreciated bands, and it's real hard to make the case that a band that's voted "Most Important American Band" (by the same organization that sponsored this list) is truly underappreciated. I love the Band. Now I have no knowledge of the accolade RS is supposed to have hung on the Band, but if that's the case, it does seem a little stupid in the next breath to declare them underappreciated. Isn't it possible to think so highly of something (a band, person, etc) that they will always seem underappreciated to you? This list is not unappreciated. I don't see a contradiction in declaring something "the best" or "great", but also declaring it underappreciated.
caliber66
I thought dannygutters' point was that The Band is kinda Canadian.d'oh! Isn't it possible to think so highly of something (a band, person, etc) that they will always seem underappreciated to you? This list is not unappreciated. I don't see a contradiction in declaring something "the best" or "great", but also declaring it underappreciated. The point is, if Rolling Stone Magazine declares that something is the best, they clearly don't underappreciate it. IMO, there's no band (or whatever) that is so important that it can't possibly be overrated, nor do I feel there is a band that is so important that it can't be "appreciated" enough. I love the Band.If it wasn't for a certain group of space cowboys from the Haight-Ashbury, I don't think it could be argued that The Band is the finest band from North America evah. Watkins Glen July '73: GD, The Band, The Allmans...now there's a show that deserves to be released!

Watkins Glen July '73: GD, The Band, The Allmans...now there's a show that deserves to be released! The Band's set was - although, from what I understand - it was really another show that was actually released under the title of Watkins Glen. There are, of course, stray GD and Allman tracks from that show on various boxsets.
williemood
#23. full list: http://www.rollingstone.com/rockdaily/inde...ciated-artists/ Decent list, but it's hard to take serious without Richard Thompson.

jakobnicholas
I do think early Bob Seger is unappreciated. So sue me. But before you do, please put on "Ramblin' Gamblin' Man" & turn it up to 11. Then play "Back in 72". Then play "Katmandu", just because. A bit louder please. OK, thank you. I think it's odd Seger is on this list, though I do like many of his songs....especially his mellower songs, like Till it Shines, Famous Final Scene, Roll Me Away, Somewhere Tonight... I'd like to see Vic Chesnutt or the Flaming Lips on the list.
