TimRoss
http://www.spinner.com/2007/05/18/new-musi...shing-pumpkins/ I honestly like it much more now that I've heard the full version in a relatively decent rip. Much, much better than I was expecting...but I was expecting absolute shit. Lyrics are the typical Corgan drivel, but the guitar is fun in that it's just rawk guitar and wanking. I really like the little end bit that actually sounds like early Pumpkins. Pandering with that bit? Perhaps. I have mixed feelings here about how VC treats the Pumpkins. I absolutely loved them growing up...until I grew out of them. I still have a soft spot for them, and wish them/Billy success, but so much has misfired and sucked lately. I probably rag on him more than anyone I know, but I get defensive when I read people here dismissing him so easily. It's like family; you hate each other until someone outside the family says something, and then you band together. Ok, I'll stand back and let you all fire away at Mr. Corgan and his latest. Prose
I have to agree, that its hard to dismiss someone like Billy Corgan who obviously is a talented fellow. The problem though isnt a question of his gifts but how he presents them. I didn't think Zwan was as awful as some made it seem, but when you tell everyone that its a "band" and everyone in the band is in it for the long haul and it implodes doesn't give it any credibility. I really grew tired of listening to the hype when on the eve of his first(this could be argued) "solo" record he takes out a page in the newspaper to promote the "return" of the Pumpkins. I think this doomed his solo career and will also doom the comeback too. I like Tim loved the Pumpkins in the early days, some of those early Metro gigs were some of the best concerts i have ever seen, BUT, they were of a certain time and space, and that time is gone. I wish the best for Mssrs corgan and Chamberlin but doubt I will be buying any cd or tix.
theashtraysays
... he takes out a page in the newspaper to promote the "return" of the Pumpkins. I think this doomed his solo career ..."TheFutureEmbrace" doomed his solo career. It's just not very good. I haven't listened to Tarantula yet, but I do hope it's good. Mellon Collie remains one of my fave's. I even liked Adore for what it was. Here's hoping...

Chendizzle
Pretty fun song. I was expecting something embarrassingly bad, but he seems to have recaptured that Pumpkins sound.
imsjry
Pretty fun song. I was expecting something embarrassingly bad, but he seems to have recaptured that Pumpkins sound. That song plain out rocks! His Cheep Trick obsession on full display. lyrics... I don
Scalzunfield
His vocals on this track make me cringe. That and there are some totally cringe-worthy lyrics scattered throughout the song. Pretty much what I was expecting from this: something I'll probably want to ignore.

That record is pretty up there with some of his best work and the time period had a certain creative flare that his solo stuff just didn't even come close to having. I think the song is good. The guitar work is pretty wicked and the lyrics are trite. His singing did bug me a bit, but all-in-all, a fun song.
floydsu
I don't see why people don't like Zwan. It was his best work since "Mellon Collie" IMHO, and here's to the new album. "Tarantula" reminds me of early era Pumpkins, although the vocals are much mroe discernable (possibly misspelled).
Jesusetc84
Billy Corgan gets an A- for melodies and a D+ for lyrics, and an uhh I dunno.. He's a good guitar player. The pumpkins were one of the three first bands I liked; Nirvana, Smashing Pumpkins, and STP. I still love Nirvana, and can't stand STP; my feelings about the Pumpkins are somewhere in the middle. Siamese Dream is always excellent; everything else they did is a mixed bag imo.

I loved Machina as well....I am excited to see what the future holds for Mr. Corgan and whomever he enlists to be The (new) Smashing Pumpkins.
solace
the guitar tone on the solo for Tarantula is pretty asstacular also, that super quiet bridge thing doesn't work for me at all, it sounds super out of place. lyrics are awful, vocals are pretty dry and banal, guitars are good at times, drums are the best part of the song. can't say much for the melody really either, not that memorable. not a terrible song, but far from great too. i'm less afraid of hearing the full thing than i was before though, so i guess it's a start. and much more promising than the first taste from Adore or Machina as well... 6.5/
rwrkb
other than a desire for more screaming, i enjoyed the track. and i ain't afeared to say so. also, earl, i too enjoy the Zwan.
solace
i liked Zwan too, even though the album was a big letdown... they had so many more songs that were way way better than about 70% of what made the album. they had somewhere around 40-50 songs i believe, maybe more. brianjeremy
there was a song on the dvd that i thought blew away everything on the album. i was also disappointed nothing ever came of the rumored acoustic album they had recorded. That's because that album was never recorded. The band broke up a week before they were to enter the studio. It's been rumored that there were some demoed songs but nothing more has been said. I dig their Number of the Beast cover. Most of those songs ended up on the canned "chicago" solo album. I would love to hear them....I have the live shows somewhere...
