lovecontagious
Hi everyone. I know I don't post often. Usually, I post more in the summer when I'm on break, but I try to read the boards when I can. This morning ended a very happy week on an extrememly sad note. We woke up this morning to find that one of our dogs, Trixie, had passed away last night. Trixie didn't start out as our dog. She came with the house...literally. When we signed the papers buying the house, the woman said, "Do you like dogs?" I said, "Yes, we have one." She said, "Weeelllll, now you have two." The people who owned the house took Trixie in as a favor to a friend who worked at the pound. All they had to do was let her run on their property, let her live under their porch, and feed her. When they moved, they couldn't take her to the city. 1. It wouldn't be fair and 2. Well, they wouldn't have been able to catch her. Trixie wouldn't let that family come anywhere near her. When we moved in, Trixie had problems with our dog, Karma, but they worked them out. Trixie would get *real* close to Lilac Rain whenever she wasn't looking and eventually, Trixie would sneak up and give her a quick kiss on the back of her legs. Then she would bolt just out of arms distance, stop and watch Lilac Rain turn, giggle, and call out to her. We'd call her and she would get every so close, sniff our outstretched hands, and back away. Trixie kept our property free of critters. She was a fantastic hunter, and was always proud to show us what she caught (eeewwww!). Then one day we had a helluva storm. It was nasty out, but I decided it would be fun to sit on the covered deck to watch it. As I sat there, Trixie came up to me. I talked to her, tried to say soothing things...she was obviously so scared (turns out she hated all storms). The next thing I knew, Trixie, the 50lb.+ German shepard mix was *entirely* in my lap. Not one part of her touched the ground. She let me pet her, and she gave me tiny kisses on my hands. She shivered and tried to calm her as best as I could. Everyone was surprised to see her on my lap, and she was love on by all that night! After that, Trixie was *our* dog. She was still skittish, but she trusted us more and more. I even got a flea collar on her this year! She *loved* Lilac Rain and would follow her everywhere. When you looked in her eyes (she had the sweetest eyes), they seemed to say how much she loved us. Nobody knows how old Trixie was, and we think she either had heart worm or was bitten by a snake. My husband just got done burying Trixie in our back yard. Lilac Rain picked out a rock as a grave marker. "Mama, I picked this rock because it's tan and gold...just like the color of Trixie." Trixie will definately be missed. Wendy
You were good people to adopt her, and it sounds like she enjoyed her life even though it was from under a porch. Condolences to you and Lilac Rain and the rest of her family.
mountain bed
Condolences to you from all of us here at the MB compound. As many folks around here know, we lost our beloved Viola Lee ( Bassett) last Thanksgiving. There's nothing better than dogs imo. So take care. Couldn't help but notice the name Lilac Rain. From Unbroken Chain? Very, very nice!

lovecontagious
Thanks for the well wishes everyone. We're still getting use to the idea that Trixie isn't here. Again today, my daughter got out of the car and called, "Karma...Daisy Mae...Trix - oh yeah." No tears, just very sad. Losing a member of the family is never easy, but we'll be alright. Like I said earlier, I don't post often during the school year, but when I do, I'm reminded why I keep checking in and coming back. The people on VC are some of the sweetest, kindest, most compassionate people that I've "met". You guys rock.
