Tweedling
My wife has a car wreck. The driver of the other vehicle fails to yield the right of way. After getting out and looking at the damage it's soon apparent the driver and passenger do not speak English. Before the police arrive a woman shows up and asks my wife to tell the police officer that she was driving and not the other women. She says if my wife doesn't lie these ladies will be deported. She states, "My husband is an attorney and he says it will be ok." What would you do?

Duck-Billed Catechist
I don't remember being asked who the other driver was in giving my side of an accident report. It might not come up.
aricandover
I'd tell the lady to fuck off, and tell the cops the truth.
OOO
well, if the lady who is covering for them has insurance, wouldn't lying be better off for all parties involved? I was a passenger in a fender bender once, and my friend's parents hadn't gotten car insurance yet for him, so his parents arrived on the scene, asked the other guy if he'd say that my pal's dad was driving, and everything was sorted out that way. But you ARE sort of trusting a random person which could be trouble.
aricandover
well, if the lady who is covering for them has insurance, wouldn't lying be better off for all parties involved? no. if they're here illegally, driving illegally, and getting into accidents, they deserve to get caught. OOO
no. if they're here illegally, driving illegally, and getting into accidents, they deserve to get caught. I agree with that, but if Tweedling's wife gets stuck with paying extra for stuff because of them being insuranceless....it seems like she is then shooting herself in the foot a little.. jenbobblehead
i am pretty sure it is illegal to lie on a police report, and it is certainly fraud to lie to your insurance carrier. A random woman who shows up to try to talk her out of telling the truth is awfully fishy to me.
yermom
I'm with lysistratasmith on this...not lying is a good idea.
jenbobblehead
i would like to know what Tweedling's wife DID do, and whether we need to call HomeLand Security, Inc.
Edie
Definitely do not lie. You cannot go wrong by telling the truth in this case, even if it costs you money now. Money spent now is better than lots of money spent later.
anodyne
i can't see purgering yourself as a good thing. i know i pay extra on my insurance for uninsured motorist coverage. i also pay a little bit (unvoluntarily) when I get license plates for the state's uninsured motorist coverage. if in doubt, play the plausible denial card the reagan and second bush administration made famous -- "i don't recall" goes a long way. Tweedling
OK. The lady, who came up with the idea to lie, did have insurance and she did own the car involved in the wreck. When my wife called me and explained the situation I said, "Tell the officer whoever has insurance was driving!" My wife is the more sensible thinker (in most cases) and decided to tell the truth. Come to find out the lady owned a house cleaning service and these women were working for her. No lawyer-husband and the license plates were not registered to the car they were on. Then we learned something new, the city police officers can not do anything with the illegal aliens unless they have committed a felony. I think it's pathetic to see people who have no respect for the laws that everyone else is required to follow. I think it's funny to hear some people say our economy could not handle the absence of illegals in the work place. I believe we would be surprised. Sorry I did not intend on ranting. I just thought this was an unusual situation and I wanted to see what some of your thoughts were.
aricandover
Then we learned something new, the city police officers can not do anything with the illegal aliens unless they have committed a felony. that's terrible. the police should have to take them into custody and hand them off to the INS. benjamin
Even scarier, illegal immigrants will not be handed over to INS if the charge is intoxicated in public
anodyne
as long as suzie and johnnie teenager are so involved in seventeen million clubs and school sports teams (and NOT working), no one will do the traditional afterschool (i.e. shitjob) work. we're soft to an unforgivable degree. and i'm drunk. goodnight. jenbobblehead
it is interesting the idea that we need illegal workers in order for the US to work. Is that because companies pay so little that the only folks who will take the jobs are illegals, or is it because the jobs are so crappy and have no upward mobility no one in the US would work them? or is it a combination of both along with the fact that americans are lazy and really don't want to work?
bjorn_skurj
I think it's more of a profit maximization tool, combined with the cultural shift away from manual labor as part of our economic shift to a service-based economy.

bjorn_skurj
I think that can best be explained by the insightful lyrics of this Cher song: My father married a pure CherokeeMy mother's people were ashamed of meThe Indians said I was white by lawThe white man always called me "Indian Squaw" ChorusHalf-breed, that's all I ever heardHalf-breed, how I learned to hate the wordHalf-breed, she's no good they warnedBoth sides were against me since the day I was born We never settled, went from town to townWhen you're not welcome you don't hang aroundThe other children always laughed at me"Give her a feather, she's a Cherokee" Chorus We weren't accepted and I felt ashamedNineteen I left them, tell me who's to blameMy life since then has been from man to manBut I can't run away from what I am Chorus And this song too: They took the whole Cherokee nationPut us on this reservationTook away our ways of lifeThe tomahawk and the bow and knifeTook away our native tongueAnd taught their English to our youngAnd all the beads we made by handAre nowadays made in Japan Cherokee people, Cherokee tribe So proud to live, so proud to die They took the whole Indian nationLocked us on this reservationThough I wear a shirt and tieI
