Beltmann
see her live. then you'll realize that she does have a perfect voice.Seeing her live made me feel lucky to merely be in the presence of such a voice.
bigideas
after her last solo lp got good press i watched her on one of the late night shows and was not too impressed. i'm learning however that most of the time the sound is not too great on late night shows. for instance, Eisley, a band from around here, had their debut on Conan thurs and there was barely any reverb and usually they have a 'dreamy' reverb-y vocal sound. it seems wilco's sound is always represented well though from what i remember. maybe that has to do with jeff rarely having any effects on his vocals (sans Being There). Definitely check out her CDs or see her live. If you listen to "Maybe Sparrow" from Fox Confessor Brings the Flood you'll hear what an incredible voice she has. We saw her a couple of weeks ago in DC and she sounds just as incredible live. Her earlier albums are a lot more country, but her voice is beautiful all the same. brettac1
The best thing to do is to just get her live album "The Tigers Have Spoken", and proceed to be blown away by how amazing her voice is. I have been in love with her ever since that came out.
TakiSC
Anybody else ever feel like strangling Dan Bejar? On each new NP album, I know there will be at least three songs that I will automatically skip...
Jimbo Jones
I think some of the negativity about the new record has to do with how mellow it is. I like it but it might be my least favorite of their four releases. I was around a few people from the band earlier this year and ELO was referenced as an influence on the record. Not exactly a band that ripped through their songs like the NP can. The comment made sense when I heard some of the new songs. As far as Neko's voice goes, it is amazing. Go see her live and just sit back and listen. Her voice is simply awe inspiring.
Dreamin'
I loved the triple caffeinated pop ecstasy of MR and EV, but I'm glad they're not making those albums over and over. I definitely hear a little ELO in Challengers. It's a grower, I think. As for Neko's voice on NP albums, I remember reading that Carl Newman told her to sing "Letter From an Occupant" like a robot. The real question is, will Carl be able to get FACTOR grants now that he has moved to the States? (Boo!)

bsr8j
skip bejar songs? you're crazy! myriad harbour is so great. I absolutely agree. Myriad Harbour was the standout for me when I first listened to this album. I also couldn't get "Entering White Cecilia" out of my head last night. As far as the new album goes, I think I figured out the best time to listen to it. I was driving home from work this morning at about 6 am (I'm working nights right now), and I was listening to the last couple of tracks. It was still dark, there was hardly anyone on the road, and it was nice and quiet. The album sounded great. I imagine this would be a great album to listen to at the end of a night out, maybe while the sun is coming up. It's definitely a mellow album, but I think that's a good thing. (Although "Slow Descent into Alcoholism" will always be great too.)
bigideas
the brief guitar riff in Myriad Harbor - i feel like i've heard it somewhere........anyone else? no idea where.
quarter23cd
As for Neko's voice on NP albums, I remember reading that Carl Newman told her to sing "Letter From an Occupant" like a robot. That might explain a lot. It doesn't make me love the NPs any more, though.
Calexico
Challengers os for me the one where it all comes together. I loved this one right from first listen whereas I only liked various tracks from the other albums. Plus, this album totally kicks the ass of the new Rilo Kiley album.
