NL Manager of the Year: Yeah, I know this award is stupid already, but if it goes to anyone but Bob Melvin, then it reaches an all time low.

Not saying that I'd vote for him myself, but it's at least arguable that it should go to Piniella.

I don't know, I think it's a lot more impressive to win the so-so west with a bunch of kids than to win the shitty central with several big name stars on your roster. I've heard some people around here saying Piniella too, but I really can't see what he did that was so great.
MrRain - I can't read your posts with that crazy new avatar of yours. Just sayin'.
Aw, come on, it's a kitten with a bow on it's head. You have no soul.Okay, I'll get rid of it soon.

This was tough. I'm not even sure where to start. But hats off to the Phils who probably have fans that have suffered longer and harder than we have. The Phils and their fans certainly deserve it. The Mets didn't. You know there's a real problem when the fans seem to want it more than the players do. Of course, there's no way for me to know that for sure, but it certainly looked like that.

And bobbob -- you are right that Willie is probably getting an unfair share of the blame. Especially when you consider how the pitching came back to earth and the pen was made up of scrubs. But at the same time there were a lot of ominous signs -- Reyes not running out balls, Milledge showing up the other team all year, Delgado (?) being quoted in the paper recently that "we are so good sometimes we get bored"(!!). I know these players need to police themselves and have a certain amount of pride in themselves, but this was a team that didn't appear to be focused. I think Willie faces a large amount of blame for that. Keith Hernandez said it in the booth -- this team committed the crime of hubris.

I am still hurting too much to find another team to jump on. Great job by the Marlins bringing their A game. Great job by the Phils. This is why they play the games. Now I will go bury my head in the sand and pretend this all never happened.

:cryin

Perfectly put, Matt. :upset In a league where no one seemed to want to sew their division up except for the team out west that no one expected to even be part of it, the Mets seemed least hungry, as if the division was a given; as if they had it coming to them.

I hope the kids learn something from this, and I hope Omar is able to find the veterans to surround them as this team resets for 2008.

Reyes has a LOT of growing up to do this winter. I don't want him to stop showing his exuberance and joy for the game, but it's funny how that stuff starts to look a lot different when a player isn't performing.

I agree with most of this but think Matt Holliday deserves the NL MVP over Utley (he, along with Tulowitzski, have carried the Rockies the entire year and barely missed the batting title for NL); and again state that Tulowitzki is more deserving of the NL ROY as his offense has been incredible, as has Braun's, but he is Gold Glove worthy, as well.

Also, I think Pedroia is more deserving of the AL ROY.

Braun had one of the best rookie seasons ever. Tulowitzki had a nice campaign, and would be very deserving any other year, but what Braun did not only puts him in first for ROY, but if he had played the whole season he'd be in the MVP race.

Tulowitzski had more than a "nice" campaign this year. He was incredible defensively and strong offensively. He is Gold Glove worthy. Braun obviously had a better bat but was pretty weak (bottom of the barrel for his position) defensively. I realize that offense is looked upon more favorably when it comes to these things and Braun will probably get the votes. This doesn't detract from the point that I think Tulowitszki had the better overall rookie year and is more deserving.

Basically, Tulowitzki's defensive advantage isn't enough to make up for Braun's ridiculous bat. Tulowitzki had a nice campaign, a 107 OPS+ isn't really amazing, but for a rookie shortstop it's good. Add his defense, and any other year he'd be a hands down winner. But Braun put up just ridiculous offensive numbers, and I don't think the defensive gap can make up for it.

Though, in all fairness, baseball prospectus disagrees with me. Braun's WARP3 is 5.2 while Tulowitzki's is a truly ridiculous 10.1. It could go either way, I just think Braun's bat puts him above Tulowitzki's glove.

Just got this from the Mets:

Dear Mets Fan:

All of us at the Mets are bitterly disappointed in failing to achieve our collective goal of building upon last year's success. We did not meet our organization's expectations -- or yours. Everyone at Shea feels the same range of emotions as you -- our loyal fans -- and we know we have let you down. We wanted to thank you for your record-breaking support of our team this year.

Equally important, Ownership will continue its commitment in providing the resources necessary to field a championship team. Omar will be meeting with Ownership shortly to present his plan on addressing our shortcomings so that we can achieve our goal of winning championships in 2008 and beyond.

You deserve better results.

Many thanks again for your record-breaking support.

I do not see the word "apologize" anywhere in there. :angry

The Pads-Rockies game is interesting, though.
