aricandover
Let's revisit that statement on Sunday afternoon ... or sooner, most likely. they took the Cubs 2-1 in their last series, a few weeks ago, so it's not that far fetched that could sweep them this time. Spawn's dad
Though I suppose it's arguable that it was "whining about" rather than "expressing outright disdain for," it was only one post and it slagged the Red Sox nearly as much as the Yankees. So what's your point, exactly? Also: go Cubs. since when does one need a point to post? I just wanted to post that story.

Oil Can Boyd
Good news: The Red Sox didn't lose any ground yesterdayBad news: The Yankees have played .657 ball since May 29. That's pretty sick ...
bjorn_skurj
I can't believe I am going to see the Mets next week, and I really don't want to go. I'm just going to get drunk and boo until I can boo no more.
Spawn's dad
Perhaps by then the ship will be righted.
bjorn_skurj
I dunno, man. They look completely spooked, and out of gas. Maybe Delgado will come back and get some big hits. But it's just as likely that Reyes will collapse in tears after booting a double play ball and Randolph will try to have Mota pitch every inning.

I watched that game last night and it's hard not to agree with you, but I still have to root for them to go all the way and then get wiped up by an AL team.
tongue-tied lightning
could the hiring of Ricky Henderson be what ruined Reyes ?
bjorn_skurj
No. I think the team is just totally tight now, holding on for dear life. When you put pressure on yourself to perform perfectly, often you insure an imperfect performance.
tongue-tied lightning
ricky might have Jose thinking about stealing bases way to much.Maybe that's why his bat is suffering. who knows, but why such a big drop-off for him after the All Star game ?haven't heard anything that he's got an injury. bjorn_skurj
The team could use a batting coach that gets results. Seems like the whole team, save Wright, fell off before the All-Star break. Delgado has been a millstone all year. Beltran is not as good as we hoped he would be. Second base has been an issue, as has all the outfield injuries. Mr. Pees-on-His-Hands has been awesome, but he's never healthy all the time. Sigh. And I do a better job managing a bullpen in Strat-o-Matic than Willie does in real life. He's not gonna get fired, but one could make an argument. Get Bobby V. on a plane back to Flushing.
tongue-tied lightning
they already fired Downs. Hitting coaches are the most over rated coach in sports. Beltan actually has been pretty good lately. 100 RBI's and he's been out alot. it's all on the bullpen, nothing else. to bad the Mets didn't have a Joba to call up like the Bombers did. Because they had four outfielders on the DL at the same time, not counting Green and Beltran who were also out for about a week, they were not able to trade for the bullpen help they wanted. As I said before, (and no RobertE, I'm not mentioning my source who gave me this info....he is an official with the team and is NOT an on-air person) they had two trades in the works but couldn't swing either one. In the offseason, for whatever reason, they chose to not re sign Darren Oliver, an innings eater, or Chad Bradford, who had no problem pitching two innings if needed. They were also under the impression that they would get Duaner Sanchez and Juan Padilla back, which didn't happen. They picked up Burgos and he went down early, with a bad arm. The way the staff is constituted, they don't have starting pitching that can consistently give them 6 innings, so they need a deeper bullpen than most teams, and because of injuries, bad non-signings and bad signings, they don't have that. As a case in point, all you have to do is look at the last 8 games, when they started breaking down. Here's a list of the last 8 games, the starters inning pitched, starters pitches thrown and the bullpen innings pitched. 9/12 starter 6 inn 102 pitches bullpen 3 inn9/14 starter 7.2 inn 107 pitches bullpen 2.1 inn9/15 starter 6 inn 98 pitches bullpen 3 inn9/16 starter 4.2 inn 118 pitches bullpen 4.1 inn9/17 starter 3.1 inn 65 pitches bullpen 4.2 inn9/18 starter 4.1 inn 88 pitches pen 3.2 inn9/19 starter 5 inn 93 pitches pen 4 inn9/20 starter 5 inn 107 pitches pen 4 inn What you want to see, for the starters, is 12 to 15 pitches per inning. What you're seeing is 15 to 27 pitches per inning. The starters are going 1 to 2 innings shorter than you'd like and the bullpen has gotten gassed.

Lammycat
Well, Gagne maintains in the 8th and the bats come up big in the 9th for the Sox to clinch a post-season spot. Here's hoping they can maintain the lead in the division. Standing ovation in Tampa. If there were more people in the stands it'd have been as if they were playing in BOS with the crowd support.
