Wilco in Omaha

Recommended Posts

My first time seeing Wilco and oh my god, it was awesome. There was definitely at least one taper there...I can't wait to get my hands on a copy of that. Great show, crowd took a while to get into it, probably because the Orpheum is more associated with symphony concerts than rock bands, people feel weird standing up and rocking out there.

P.S. Now that he's "gotten to know us better", I hope he does come back soon for that "second date" :)

Great show. The older stuff that they've reworked sounds great, and it seems like they're letting Glen do more than just keep time these days. Good to see they remembered they've got one of the best in the world behind the kit.

Amazing show! Hadn't seen them since the Atlanta>Raleigh run from 2004. Loved seeing all the old school tunes, but I was a bit surprised about how little they hit Ghost. Regardless, the wife and I had an awesome time. Hopefully, I'll be seeing them in Columbus next week.

I've actually been quite happy with how little is being played off AGIB. Now if I could just talk them into finally removing Spiders from the setlist every night...

AGIB has actually turned into my least favorite Wilco album over time: I just don't feel it's held up. I listen to AM more (maybe simply because I like to play the guitar to several of those songs) these days than I do AGIB and have been happy to see only a few tracks showing up each night off that release.

Come to think of it, at the Milwaukee show we got more Being There than AGIB. :thumbup

You think AGIB may come back to you sometime? I kind of jump around w/ their albums in terms of rating them. Yeah, sometimes, I dislike one of them but it always comes back. Must be a mood and/or seasonal thing.

It seems really common that bands with long careers tour in support of a new album and play very little of their second to last album. Of course because they just spent a year promoting the last one and have played the songs a ton. In two years someone will be commenting on how the band is playing very little SBS stuff and mostly things from their new album and AGIB/YHF.

I was a bit bummed with how dead the crowd seemed, maybe it was just the folks around me, but besides the unbelievable energy oozing from stage, everyone else seemed dead in Omaha. Favorite moment, "Impossible Germany" was very sweet, and "Spiders" continues to evolve into just a mammoth piece. "Casino Queen" was a true bonus.

THANK YOU FOR THE PICTURES mjdr!

Last night was great! The music was incredible, the band is so together, from kidsmoke with a little techno thrown in there, to the country roots Jeff started playing, last night was all over the place wonderful, beautiful, extrodinary!

Glad to hear there was a taper!

Some of the crowd was a little dead, it was funny how Jeff kept messing with them though! :D It was kind of hard to adjust to a theatre, my husband couldn't even bring in a beer?!

Can't wait to see the band play again! Yes, a "second date" (or 4th) would be GREAT!

The crowd was seated through You Are My Face, but at the end of IATTBYH everyone ended up standing during the noise jam. Jeff started laughing and went off about... (and this is paraphrased)

'There's a difficult choice to make in these theatres... to sit or to stand. Every show has it's slow parts, and it's nice to be able to sit down if you want to... it's entirely up to you. Every show has it's ups and downs. It's a bit like life. Wilco is a bit like life. Sometimes you want to sit down and relax, sometimes you want to stand up and shake your ass like a fool. We usually prefer the latter. But it's entirely up to you.'

Absolutely. What's even more surprising is how little they play off of SBS. Mostly due to the fact that the songs play out better solo. I love SBS, but had it been arranged differently, say just Jeff with an acoustic and some harmonica it could have been an absolutely brillant album. Shake it off, Side With the Seeds, Hate it Here could easily have been left off or just arranged differently. Impossible Germany had it been on Ghost, would have taken that album to a completely different level.

Seeing Jeff solo last year was the highlight for me musically. Unfortunately he only played one of the SBS songs. I would love to hear him play Either Way, Your are My Face, Please Be Patient With Me, Sky Blue Sky, and Leave Me Like You Found Me on his next solo tour, all in the same night. That would knock me on my ass just as hard as any current Wilco show has.

I must pick a bone with Tweedy. If he has a problem with seated venues, there is an easy solution. DONT PLAY SEATED VENUES. Iam so thankfull that I have never seen Wilco at a seated theatre. When they first started playing seated shows a couple years back, I was stunned. Fortunately there have been less on this tour than the last. Not sure the reasoning behind the seated shows to begin with. I have seen a lot of rock bands in my days and none is more fun to stand, sway an bop to than Wilco.

Now for a solo show, thats another story.

probably has something to do with their growing popularity, and the lack of SRO venues that'll hold 3000-6000 people.

Not so fast my friend (sorry, I had Lee Corso on the tv in the background)

Your exactly right. That is the double edged sword, we are facing. Wilco has outgrown their old gigs. The palladium in Dallas (where they played last month) had to have been the largest SRO venue I have ever attended. One of the employees said it holds over 5000. Expect more venues of this type to be built around the country. They are perfectly suited for todays mid level rock bands (Wilco, Death Cab, Decemberists, Arcade Fire, etc....) Bigger than places like the Fillmore but not nearly as cavernous as an ampitheatre or arena. Plus they can be used for multi use events such as conventions, private events, etc....

Wilco probably chose to play at the Orpheum in Omaha because there isn't really another venue of that size(2500 seats), standing or seated. And they obviously picked the right size venue because it was almost-but-not-quite sold out. I personally was happy to have the show at the Orpheum because it has decent acoustics, and it's not an un-air conditioned shithole like the Sokol. However if there was a nice, standing only venue in Omaha, I would rather see Wilco there than at the Orpheum. Saddle Creek Records did just build an all-standing club/concert hall in Omaha that is really nice, but it's way too small for Wilco, it only holds a few hundred people.
