Good Old Neon
if their only prayer was to physically grow another appendage, it seems not. if, however, their prayer was to come away from the accident that may have dictated the loss of said limb alive...maybe he did. if their prayer was to be able to walk again and they were able to physicall handle the use of a prostethic leg...maybe he did. 'BUT THE LEG IS SCIENCE' you'll likely say...and you're correct. much like i didn't think that god himself was operating on grandfather's brain tumor last week...but I do believe he helped guide and protest everyone involved in amking the operation a success.as you regard those of faith as nothing more than ufo or bigfoot nuts, i can't and don't expect you to understand the concept of someone having enough faith to have solace in the fact that should god not answer our prayers exactly, that it's for a reason...a reason that will become clearer when he's ready for us to undertsand.you really are a peach. With all due respect to you and your grandfather
Reni
ya know - in many ways you probably have a good number of people on the same page as you, in your positions - but then you take to name calling and dismiss people who come from a slightly different outlook, alienating them and the original issue.  I am a Christian - I am also pretty far left when it comes to politics - In my worldview, dictated by my spiritual and humanitarian beliefs, I am on the same boat as you when it comes to a great many things. I can't prove that God exists - but I have a strong spiritual nature that calls me to action, love and compassion - even dissent.  But, you start name calling, dismissing anyone who's reality doesn't match yours, acting all holier than thou and that's the end of it.....I once had a prof that said, "you know why leftists can't ever get anything done? It's because they can't ever agree on anything." I have never seen so much infighting and division among political/social organizations as I have secular, leftist groups (and I have been involved in many).......ever notice that at an anti-war rally, many people bring signs and give speeches about their pet causes. I am glad everyone has their pet causes - but there seems an inability to really focus in on one at the time it is needed.....and then that goes alongside the fact that when people act like you have been doing, dismissing others for coming from another worldview, but having the same desire to end global warming or end the war, etc you write them off. It is only divisive and gets nothing accomplished. Lame.   p.s... C.S. Lewis once said - "prayer doesn't change God, it changes me." And ya know - I think human beings need a lot of freaking work - and if prayer helps? All the more power.

Good Old Neon
No you're an asshole for your approach. Strong opinions are great, but you can't say that you're open-minded, etc. and then in the very next sentence say that religous people are all about "superstition". It's insulting. I'm 36, I have not even come close to figuring out religion or spirituality but just because I haven't doesn't mean those that have believe in magic! Do you know even the first thing about me? Anything - even the slightest? Spawn's dad
I'm the executive director of a religious foundation so I guess I suck. Imagine my finding out today that my life's work has not only been a waste of time but a part of the problem itself.move the dicussion forward? you've got to be kidding. You haven't let a discussion move forward yet, but repeatedly mire them in increasingly obscure layers of nonsense.

Reni
hey Gary - I have actually been reading a lot lately about Buddhism in the context of therapy lately, for one of my classes.....I have really gained some wonderful insights. I have also been reading Thich Nhat Hanh for good measure.....his writings have really given me some significant personal direction. Â
Spawn's dad
what books have you been reading? Thich Nhat Hahn's Present Moment Wondrful Moment is a delightful book and I wish I had the temperament to follow the teachings as he lays them out there. It is amazingly organic and gentle. Sadly that's not me.
