alii
I've tried some searches, and browsed the first 5 or so pages of threads and it would seem that a large amount of my favourite current bands have never been mentioned here. In some respects that isn't terribly surprising as they aren't very Wilco-like, on the other hand though if you're interested in something different then these bands are definitely for you... Boris - a Japanese Rock/Metal band. They're all over the place with their records genre-wise, from Hardcore Punk to Classic Rock to Drone/Ambient. An obvious starting point would be Pink as it covers most of that ground within one album. Opeth - a Swedish Progressive Death Metal band. Seriously. While the words "progressive" and "death metal" will surely put most people off, but Opeth deserve to be heard by a wider audience. They have some of the catchiest riffs and some of the most beautiful acoustic guitar work you'll ever hear, mixed in with some seriously heavy stuff. The albums Still Life and Blackwater Park mark the highpoint of their career. Ulver - a Norwegian schizophrenic band. While generally changing genre for each new album and moving between such extremes as Traditional Folk, Black Metal and Trip-Hop, they always seem to produce quality. Their latest effort, Shadow's of the Sun, is their most mellow. Their leader singer, Garm, also fronted Avant-Garde band Arcturus and it's well worth looking up their The Sham Mirrors album. borracho
i LOVE Boris! Heavy Rocks is awesome as well... the new one with Michio Kurihara - Rainbow - is pretty cool... i would've loved to see them on their current tour...
lizish
Yeah - we've posted about Boris before - probably in one of the Now Playing threads. Good band and thanks for posting about them again....
Darkhorse
opeth's album Damnation is a great piece of work, what a voice.
the_fliz1
I have never heard of Boris or Ulver. Opeth isn't my bag of tea though. I tend to like more melodic music. Trivium isn't too bad, Matt Heafy is a great guitar player and can sing well when he isn't screaming his head off.
hardinggr
Richmond Fontaine - alt country/punk. Willy Vlautins voice sounds as if he is going to break down and cry any second...
Welsh Rich
Boris gets quite a bit of love around here, especially Pink - great album that. The Sun0))) + Boris album is good too and well worth seeking out.
TheMaker
Richmond Fontaine - alt country/punk. Willy Vlautins voice sounds as if he is going to break down and cry any second... It surprises me that these guys aren't name-dropped more frequently, this being a Wilco board. Moving Back Home #2 is one of my favourite songs of the year, hands down. PopTodd
Iron MaidenJudas Priest I do love Maiden and Priest, but seriously (for this board):Stray CatsNot that nobody here knows them, but how great were they? Brinsley SchwarzNick Lowe's first big band had an amazing run in the early-mid 70's. And the live on the BBC collection that came out a couple of years ago shows that they were even more amazing live. "(What's So Funny About) Peace, Love, and Understanding?" was theirs before Elvis', after all.
Analogman
Iron MaidenJudas Priest I do love Maiden Paul Di'Anno or the other dude?
PopTodd
Paul Di'Anno or the other dude? I love 'em both. The Di'Anno years were too short, although I suppose my favorite songs are with Di'Anno ("Running Free" and "Number Of the Beast"). He was more punk. But Bruce Dickinson was pretty damn good too, for the operatic metal thing.
uncle wilco
Paul Di'Anno or the other dude? i do like the first two by maiden with di'anno, especially killers. quite different from the dickinson era, which peaked imo with piece of mind. they became too much about the show after that. i did like brave new world quite a bit. last time i saw them was on that tour in 2000. that's the last "metal" concert i went to. Have either of your read "Run the Hills"? it's a great biography on the band, very detailed.
Analogman
One rock book I have not read. I have the The Early Years DVD - which gives a history of the band in interviews - among other things.

Not to go all A-man on you, but Rich, who played keyboards on some of the early Richmond Fontaine albums is/used to be a member of these forums. Not sure if he worked on the the Fitzgerald or more recent stuff, but still, if we had unending webspace, we could probably go find his posts and PMs about the sessions. He had some pretty good Willy Vaultin (sp?) tales.
Analogman
yeah, that's a good one. Do you own the book?
