NetFlix Recommendations

Recommended Posts

I've received some great recommendations from others on this board for my NetFlix list. With the writer's strike, I was looking for TV series as well as movies. Since I couldn't find an official thread on recommendations, I figured I'd start one. Tried to categorize as best as possible, but categorizing is subjective as are all recommendations ;)

I had to edit my list way down -- I spend a lot of time watching movies, and I'm sure I've left out a lot of good ones I'll remember later. Looking forward to other members' suggestions :)

Favorite Directors (so any movie by them, list was getting too long... so it's a catch-all category)

Coen Brothers

Wes Anderson

Jim Jarmusch

Paul Thomas Anderson

Gus Van Sant

Comedy

Shaun of the Dead (Edgar Wright's & Simon Pegg's first movie)

Hot Fuzz (Edgar Wright & Simon Pegg's second movie)

For TV series fun, try the Jeeves & Wooster series featuring Hugh "Dr. House" Laurie and Stephen Fry.

Renting that (all of it, over a period of a few months) showed me the true potential of Netflix. :yes

The Corndog Man

A dark comedy about revenge that also features a few tunes off of Dr. John's "Gris-Gris" album. Its a sundance movie and for the most part only features two actors and the dialogue between them, its a great late night movie.

Outside of my family, this is the first time I've ever seen this movie mentioned anywhere. My sister loves it, my brother hates it, and I've never seen it.

A buddy of mine from Texas introduced me to this movie about 6 years ago, we spent quite a few drunken nights watching it and laughing our asses off. Outside of Netflix this movie is pretty hard to find but I recently joined NF and watched it again with my wife. She didn't care much for it but we have very different tastes and she doesn't really appreciate offbeat or "weird" movies.

Here's a few worth checking out:

Comedy: Withnail & I - Great British comedy with superb dialog. It has become somewhat of a cult classic over the years.

Sci-fi: The Quiet Earth - Last-man-on-earth sci-fi film set in New Zealand.

Horror/Thriller: The Tenant, Repulsion, Rosemary's Baby - You can't go wrong with any of those Polanski films.

Drama: A Woman Under the Influence - Gena Rowlands is fantastic in this.

Action: Vanishing Point - The king of all car chase movies.

TV: Six Feet Under, Freaks and Geeks, Sports Night, Arrested Development...

Love that film...

'tis a classic that never grows tiresome :).

"We've gone on holiday by mistake."

"I feel like a pig shat in my head."

"How can it be so cold in here? It's like Greenland in here. We've got to get some booze. It's the only solution to this intense cold. Somethings got to be done. We can't go on like this! I'm a trained actor, reduced to the status of a bum! I mean, look at us! Nothing that reasonable members of society demand as their rights! No fridges, no televisions, no phones. Much more of this and I'm going to apply for Meals on Wheels."

"I have just narrowly avoided having a buggering. And I've come in here with the express intent of wishing one on you."

The dialog is fantastic.

Withnail: What are we supposed to do with that?

Peter Marwood: Eat it.

Withnail: Eat it? Fucker's alive.

Peter Marwood: Yeah, you've got to kill it.

Withnail: Me? I'm the firelighter and fuel collector.

Peter Marwood: Yeah, I know, but I got the logs in......... It takes away your appetite just looking at it.

Withnail: No it doesn't. I'm starving.

Great suggestions, and some friendly reminders too! I haven't seen Withnail & I for years, will definitely add that to my list, it's hilarious! I just received Planet Terror via Netflix yesterday, so will see it today or tomorrow. Wholeheartedly second the Polanski flicks.

And, one of my all-time favorites to add, shame on me for leaving it off my original list:

Harold & Maude - one of my "top ten" films of all time (no particular order, it's easier that way), watch at least 3 times a year

I've only had Netflix since May and I share it with my boyfriend, but movies/TV shows we or I have loved that may have already been mentioned...

TV Shows

Freaks and Geeks

Undeclared (both by Judd Apatow)

Rescue Me - Can't get enough of this show

We're looking into Six Feet Under next

Movies (With exception to highly popular ones)

State and Main

Speedway Junky

When Harry Met Sally (ok popular, but really good)

The Big Chill

Kevin Smith movie's (Mallrats, Clerks, etc.)

St. Elmo's Fire

The Wizard (brings back memories if you're 20 something)

Singles

Several Hitchcock films

Anyone know if the TV show The Shield is any good? Or movie The Motel? I'm looking forward to the Once release.

Loved Six Feet Under, although the first few seasons are the best. As with many shows, it went on too long and became too soap-y for me. The Shield is good, although I stopped watching because the releases of the DVDs was sporadic.

State and Main - it's David Mamet, enough said, his writing is among the best

As for Kevin Smith, his new flick Zack & Miri Make a Porno is officially starring (just announced last week) Seth Rogen from Freaks & Geeks, 40 Year Old Virgin, Knocked Up, and SuperBad. Starts filming in January and should be a good one. Just a long wait for those of us who wait for DVD releases!

Check out Robert Altman's "Short Cuts" saw this a few weeks ago and loved it.

"The Straight STory" Disney and David Lynch? Its actually really good; a few poorly acted scenes but over all i really liked it.

"Down By Law" Tom Waits, John Laurie, Roberto Bengini in a jail cell for an hour and a half; I coudn't stop laughing.

if you haven't seen "Planet Earth" I can't recommend it enough. Some of the most jaw dropping nature footage youll ever see. Even if your not usually into this stuff I'd say check it out.

To anyone who hasn't seen this yet and is considering seeing it:

Please, consider reading the Raymond Carver stories the movie is based on first. They are top notch stuff and will make the movie watching really exciting. Trust me! :thumbup

(Heck, I'll even loan you the book through the mail if you're interested.)

Edit: I'll throw Michel Gondry's Human Nature out here as a Netflix reccomendation. It's his first full length film and great and very funny. Charlie Kauffman wrote it.

Carver is my all-time favorite short story writer. I would definitely agree that reading the stories would be the way to go before watching the movie. The movie was okay, but the stories are sublime.

Human Nature was fantastic. Wasn't expecting it to be very good but I def. liked it.

Also

I highly recommend "Koyaanisqatsi: Life Out Of Balance" its the first of three films that deal with how humans have disrupted the balcnce of lifeo n our planet. There is no dialogue, but Philip Glass scores all three films. I just watched the second film last night and can't recommend these films enough.

If that sounds like something you might enjoy I also recommend "Baraka" it will def. give you an appreciation for our planet.

Another great documentary is "When The Levees Broke" the three part mini series by Spike Lee.

And if you like foreign films "Salaam Bombay" is an excellent indian film about a young boy surviving on the streets of bombay.

Koyaanisqatsi is the better film, but Powaqqatsi has the better music! I actually have a poster for the third one, Naqoyqatsi, hanging in my classroom--mostly to provoke questions. I actually thought of these films recently, when I was watching a German documentary called Our Daily Bread... if you like this trilogy, you must look into that one, too.

Well, there's always your local Blockbuster... but I'm not a fan as they censor films. Another option is buying a copy -- $10.99 new on Amazon, $16.99 for Koyaanisqatsi and Powaqqatsi "2 Pack" -- and lots of cheaper options used. Or, find a good independent video rental shop. Too bad Netflix fails on this one, but it's not the first time.

Huh. All three films show up as available on Netflix when I search.

Does Netflix availability vary by region?

edit: sorry, I misunderstood ... someone told me months ago that the -qatsi films weren't up there, and I thought that's what was being referred to.

I do find Our Daily Bread on Netflix, but it's not available on DVD yet (release date listed as "Unknown"), so it won't be at Blockbuster either.
