Much better than that gloopy Chicago deep dish stuff and different (and a bit better) than the NY slice. For a small city New Haven has a ton of great food options. Try Rudy's on Elm street for some pre-show drinks. Also...NH is very walkable. Park when you get there and come back to the car when it's time to go. It's small. Also...there are two great Yale Art Museums (both free.)

Try Rudy's on Elm street for some pre-show drinks. Rudy's is kind of far from The Shubert. I'd recommend Richter's or Black Bear or Nikkita-- both are about one block away. BAR is a really pizza place/bar as well and the wait wouldn't be as long as it is at Sally's and Pepe's. I've never been to a concert at this venue, but I have seen a few musicals, etc. with crappy seats but even then I could see fine. As long as you're not on the absolute end of a row, your view should be fine--

CHICAGO PIZZA SUCKS, had to throw that out there, and for the record i checked out local NH online and its not nearly has bad as i though, i always thought of NH as a poor man's harford with a nice college on the side but it seems to be a respectable place

Pepes pizza with a White Birch soda is wht happens to you when you die if you are Ghandi... extraordinary, cola fired ovens. Don't forget the white birch soda. Also' Lous Lunch serves the srangest hmburgers the world has ever seen. Cooked like a grilled cheese in a whirly machine. Also never ask for ketchup there or you wil be killed. Tough but fair Enjoy the Schubert. great old theater
Wilco Worshipper
I've been to Toad's Place quite often, so I usually park in the same public lot everytime up near what seems to be the "center of it all". Is the Shubert relatively close to Toad's?!?
sweetheart-mine
we have 1st row of mezz section? should be good but i read in someone's post that they might be obstructedi've got first row of mezz too and at first, from the charts, thought the stage view might be obstructed. but there's more info than i thought on the chart: only the 2 far-over left (A28) and far-over right(A27) seats at mezz level appear to be somewhat obstructed by a few box seats along the walls. the theater looks gorgeous! built in 1914. i saw numerous photos of its inside on a google find today about someone's architectural tours of historic theaters, which included the shubert. it looks like there are very few bad seats. it's a pretty small-size and intimate-looking venue. after seeing the photos, i don't think anyone is ridiculously far from the stage, and front row mezz looks way closer than i imagined. i can't sleep tonight, because i can hardly wait! Willkoman
I just talked to the Shubert Box Office. Wilco set a record for a sellout for an "adult" show but were trounced by The Wiggles by 30 minutes for the all-time record.

And...earlier someone mentioned Black Bear as an option for drinks but I say stay away...stay far away from that place. Frat bar of the worst kind. Rudy's is not too far to walk...unless you're not used to walking.

I moved here from Boston and confused by "Poorman's Hartford" .Neither city is glamorous but culturally you have to give it to New Haven
yankhotelfox
I lived in CT for the first 30 years of my life. Hartford is a ghost town compared to New Haven which has way more culture and Yale's tax base to boot. As for the Shubert, I've never seen a show there. I'm not surprised that it sold out quickly as it's a pretty small venue. I've never seen the band in my home state. They have only played there twice since I've been a fan, both in '03 and I couldn't make it to either one. It should be a great show. As for Toad's Place, surprisingly, Wilco has only played there once, back in 2000.
Mrs. Peel
As for Toad's Place, surprisingly, Wilco has only played there once, back in 2000. "An Evening With Wilco". Damn good show that turned me into the fan I am today.
KL47
New Haven is great and the Schubert is a cool, old theater. If you are making a day of it, the Yale art museums are excellent and free. There's also a decent independent record store called Cutler's. You can't go wrong w/ pizza at BAR, Sally's, Pepe's or Modern. BAR is closest and is also a brewery w/ good, fresh beer and has good bands for free in the back room on Sunday sights. Louis' Lunch is across the street and stakes a legitimate claim to the first hamburger in the US. As mentioned above, it is unlike any burger you've had anywhere else. Can't wait for the show... http://www.modernapizza.com/ http://www.pepespizzeria.com/ http://travel.yahoo.com/p-travelguide-1059...zza_new_haven-i http://www.barnightclub.com/ http://www.louislunch.com/ http://artgallery.yale.edu/ http://ycba.yale.edu/index.asp http://www.cutlers.com/
OudErnest
I personally feel that Modern Apizza ("ah-beets") is the best in town but you can't go wrong with Pepe's Apizza, Sally's Apizza or the newcomer Bru Room at Bar either. Bar is closest to the Shubert, only about a two minute walk, and their pizza is very good and it's a brewpub as well. Rudy's is less than a 10 minute walk and Louie's Lunch does make amazing burgers but I believe they're closed on Sundays. Bentara, about a 10 minute walk & several blocks south of the Shubert in the Ninth Squaree district, is a fabulous Malaysian restaurant as well. If you're into art the Yale Art Gallery and Yale British Gallery are two of the finest small musuems in the country, and they're free. As far as the Hartford-New Haven debate goes there is no debate. As someone who has worked in "downtown" Hartford for 18 years and who is also a resident of New Haven I can say without a doubt that New Haven blows Hartford away in every category. I agree with the comment here in that Hartford is one of the most boring cities on the planet earth. The only thing on the streets of Hartford after 5:00 are tumble weeds.
