JerseyMike
Thats very true. My main point in this whole offense/defense discussion is that you can't win the Super Bowl without playing great D. There has never been a team that won the big game by merely outscoring the opponent. It seems that every team that has won the Super Bowl played very good defense in that particular game, and more importantly, caused turnovers. But yes, for the most part you need both to get to the big game.
bobbob1313
You can play great defense in a game and not be a great defense. A lot goes into that. That is my point. Plenty of teams have won with good defenses that had great playoffs. Same with offenses.
JerseyMike
In a very roundabout way...exactly!!! The Colts were a great example of that last year. Their D played great in the playoffs, despite having one of the worst run-D's in the regular season. And I guess you can say the same for the Giants O this year: inconsistent during the regular season but they have been playing well through the playoffs. If they can play good D next Sunday and cause a few turnovers, they have a chance to beat the Pats.

JerseyMike
Ha! Why do I get the feeling that ESPN, with their need to oversaturate every single aspect of sports, will be discussing this in the morning?

JerseyMike
Thats way too big of a spread for the Super Bowl. Does anybody know where that ranks in all-time spreads? I know Super Bowl III was 19 Pts.
ZenLunatic
Oh man. I'd take that spread. Yeah I think its too much too. I think the game will be pretty close.
lamradio
Wow.. That's a huge spread.. Hmm.. maybe there is some kind of hidden agenda here? Do the bookies in Vegas know something we don't? Maybe they know the pats aren't going to meet that spread, so they will get more money? Or maybe I'm just talking out of my ass..
PigSooie
I think NE is going to win.

The spread has nothing to do with who the bookies think will win or by how much. It is based on what number will have about 50% of betters betting on each team. If the favored team is getting all the bets, then they raise the point spread. If the underdog is getting all of them, they lower it. It is completely based on the bets that are already being placed. Lammycat
That spread will likely shrink as the week progresses, too.

The spread thing has always confused me (sorry.. smoked a little too much in college).. But thanks for clearing it up for me.

Brand the football then. Sorry... I'm just a bitter Lions fan. I don't even remember what the playoffs were like. All I know is that the playoffs included Barry Sanders, Herman Moore, Jerry Ball, Brett Perriman, Johnny Morton, and Chris Speilman. (I refuse to believe that Scott Mitchell was ever in the playoffs)

jmacomber68w
I think the Patriots are probably a more skilled team than the Giants, but the Giants are meaner and tougher. Should be a good game. probably? they are indeed 18-0, but the giants are gonna make it tough, should be decided in the 4th quarter, pats win....14-10, im going againts any common sense and think its gonna be a low scoring game
