'oil = the horse drawn carriage industry' is the new 'oil = heroin' .

Not just oil, ethanol and any other technology that gets an unfair advantage. ;) I think the best solution will rise to the top if the government didn't fuck it up.

We are a nation of innovation and allowing drilling as long the subsidies remain: A) won't solve the problem; B ) will likely inhibit solutions from being developed.

I don't see that 'B' is true. There is a lot of work going into these other "innovative solutions".

See this, to me, is like the old woman who swallowed the fly. The solution is worse than the original problem. There aren't just two sides to this and as long as lobbies are able to successfully fuck things up, new, potentially more effective, solutions' development will be stifled... technologies we perhaps haven't even thought of. We are a nation of innovation and allowing drilling as long the subsidies remain: A) won't solve the problem; B ) will likely inhibit solutions from being developed. It seems sort of akin to subsidizing the horse-drawn carriage industry to the detriment of the emerging auto industry of the early 1900s.

bull's-eye! you are nailing it.

There sure is. T. Boone Pickens for example. BUT that is because it seems a wise investment now DESPITE the subsidies. Less unfair advantage to some technologies = more incentive to develop others. I wasn't saying in "B" that it eliminates competitive technologies, merely that it decreases the investment in them.

dude, personally, i can totally handle my religion being 'ridiculed'. if you look back to my main point of contention w/ your religion-based posts...it's that your doing the same exact thing you slight them for (demonization, stereotyping, preaching, etc.). i realize we disagree who is more deserving of 'ridicule', but that's the deal.

so to put into an analogy for better understanding:

I am Jack's war on war = Larry Craig (allegedly)

This may have been discussed and I missed it, but have you guys seen this Stop Oil Speculation Now campaign. It's basically a lobbying group created by all the major airlines to shift blame for rising airline prices to oil speculators. They're not necessarily wrong but they are definitely sneaky about how they are promoting it. I had to research it to find out who created it; it's not shown openly on the site. They're not asking for money, so I suppose it's okay.

Also, Chuck Schumer & Harry Reid have some bill dealing with oil speculation. I can't find specifics on the internet (only time Google has ever failed me. I don't consider a Fox News article titled "For once, it is the Democrats who have the right idea ... we can only hope that the Republicans come along" a reliable source.) Anyone hear anything about this?

Well, it probably did go down because of something Bush said. So, what's wrong with McCain pointing this out?

Because Bush lifting the ban probably had little to no effect on the price of oil. Oil that may be years down the road will not create a drop that servere in price. I just don't see how Bush deserves any praise when it is related to Oil.

You've got my support as the next Chairman of the Federal Reserve if you decide to pursue that course of action.

Well, Pelosi's point is that there are already areas that are leased for drilling. She's encouraging people to expand drilling there rather than having Congress lift the ban on offshore drilling.

Y'know, as long as oil companies are making record profits, they ain't gonna be on fire to increase the supply much. When it gets high enough where it has an effect on consumption, then supply will increase. (Assuming ... it still can.)

Talk about a flip-flop.
