IRememberDBoon
Summary: On his nationally syndicated radio show, Michael Savage claimed that autism is "[a] fraud, a racket. ... I'll tell you what autism is. In 99 percent of the cases, it's a brat who hasn't been told to cut the act out. That's what autism is. What do you mean they scream and they're silent? They don't have a father around to tell them, 'Don't act like a moron. You'll get nowhere in life. Stop acting like a putz. Straighten up. Act like a man. Don't sit there crying and screaming, idiot.' " On the July 16 edition of his nationally syndicated radio show, Michael Savage claimed that autism is "[a] fraud, a racket." Savage went on to say, "I'll tell you what autism is. Don't sit there crying and screaming, idiot.' " Savage concluded, "f I behaved like a fool, my father called me a fool. And he said to me, 'Don't behave like a fool.' The worst thing he said -- 'Don't behave like a fool. Don't be anybody's dummy. Don't sound like an idiot. Don't act like a girl. Don't cry.' That's what I was raised with. That's what you should raise your children with. Stop with the sensitivity training. You're turning your son into a girl, and you're turning your nation into a nation of losers and beaten men. That's why we have the politicians we have." Savage also stated: "[W]hy was there an asthma epidemic amongst minority children? Because I'll tell you why: The children got extra welfare if they were disabled, and they got extra help in school. It was a money racket. Everyone went in and was told [fake cough], 'When the nurse looks at you, you go [fake cough], "I don't know, the dust got me." ' See, everyone had asthma from the minority community." Talk Radio Network, which syndicates The Savage Nation, claims that Savage is heard on more than 350 radio stations. The Savage Nation reaches at least 8.25 million listeners each week, according to Talkers Magazine, making it one of the most listened-to talk radio shows in the nation, behind only The Rush Limbaugh Show and The Sean Hannity Show. From the July 16 edition of Talk Radio Network's The Savage Nation: SAVAGE: Now, you want me to tell you my opinion on autism, since I'm not talking about autism? A fraud, a racket. For a long while, we were hearing that every minority child had asthma. Why did they sudden -- why was there an asthma epidemic amongst minority children? Because I'll tell you why: The children got extra welfare if they were disabled, and they got extra help in school. It was a money racket. Everyone went in and was told [fake cough], "When the nurse looks at you, you go [fake cough], 'I don't know, the dust got me.' " See, everyone had asthma from the minority community. That was number one. Now, the illness du jour is autism. You know what autism is? I'll tell you what autism is. In 99 percent of the cases, it's a brat who hasn't been told to cut the act out. That's what autism is. What do you mean they scream and they're silent? They don't have a father around to tell them, "Don't act like a moron. You'll get nowhere in life. Stop acting like a putz. Straighten up. Act like a man. Don't sit there crying and screaming, idiot." Autism -- everybody has an illness. If I behaved like a fool, my father called me a fool. And he said to me, "Don't behave like a fool." The worst thing he said -- "Don't behave like a fool. Don't be anybody's dummy. Don't sound like an idiot. Don't act like a girl. Don't cry." That's what I was raised with. That's what you should raise your children with. Stop with the sensitivity training. You're turning your son into a girl, and you're turning your nation into a nation of losers and beaten men. That's why we have the politicians we have.

jakobnicholas
Nobody would support his statements. Unfortunately, he probably speaks the truth in a minority of autism cases, but for him to say it as a general statement of what he thinks of autism is inexcusable. Still.....he's 10 times more entertaining and interesting than 90 percent of talk radio hosts. I don't always like his opinions, but I find his show to be very listenable. My wife primarily treats patients on the autism spectrum, and I can vouche for it being very real. Mysterious, misunderstood, yes, but very real. What a fucking asshole. lamradio
Still.....he's 10 times more entertaining and interesting than 90 percent of talk radio hosts. I don't always like his opinions, but I find his show to be very listenable. I used to listen to him all the time, but I stopped because he's.. well.. going mad.... I really think his mental health has slipped some over the last couple of years, and his autism comment is a good example. Absolutely ridiculous.
uncool2pillow
I'd say if you substituted ADD for autism, he'd be closer to right, but still not quite. I think ADD is way overdiagnosed, but a real disorder. You can tell when kid respond well to medication and others just get spaced out. I've had several Auspurgers (sp?) students. Auspurgers Syndrome is on the most functional end of the autism spectrum. In most cases, the diagnosis seems accurate.

How can he not be losing it if he can let those words come out of his mouth? I still find much of him interesting....regardless of what he thinks politically. But it's similar to Don Imus....I find his show to be interesting and funny many times, but for him to allow "nappy-headed ho" to come out of his mouth while on air is stupifying. Maybe Savage and Imus really should call it a day.

Party @ the Moontower
He is a complete idiot period. Dude, even rich white kids are sick Micheal. Can't blame it on welfare or bad parenting. Some blame goes to your government and selfish Americans who forget a heathy earth=healthy food, water, and air. Kids are sick pyhsically and mentally because they consume unheathy and unatural "food", crap tap water, chemicals everywhere, unheathy buildings with glues and toxic yucks to breathe in......etc! We as a society are destroying the health of this nation. Vacinations the first day of life?Give me a break! Chemical are taken in thru everything. Know what's in your h2o? High fructose corn syrup is the main staple now in kids diets...and we want them to concentrate in school? Grow healthy bodies? Heathy minds? If your kid is having a hard time breathing because they are so overwieght from high fructose corn syrup, trust me, their mind is just as sluggish! I was at a water park the other day and was amazed at how many kids under 12 can barely walk because they were 5 times their natural size? How can you expect anything less than asthma and diabetes etc from such a sad display of child abuse? They also seem to be the kids with the worst manners..pushing, being loud, just general public behavior skills they were not taught. As a mom I researched vaccinations, foods, etc before my child was even born. Some parents never even consider what is being thrown at us for our kids. It really takes very little effort to read lables and make good choices for our kids. SORRY...unhealthy kids is a big issue for me! [I'd say if you substituted ADD for autism, he'd be closer to right, but still not quite. I think ADD is way overdiagnosed, but a real disorder. I totally agree, I can't always agree with what he says, but at least he throws stuff out there. Ive heard more offensive things from standup comedians. Now if Micheal Savage was running for political office or something like that, I would have more of a problem, but since he isnt I dont really care.
