10-Year-Old Suspended For Broken Pencil Sharpener

Recommended Posts

Hilton Head Island, SC) - A 10-year-old South Carolina student has been suspended from school after his pencil sharpener broke and he didn't immediately get rid of the blade inside.

Authorities tell The Island Packet of Hilton Head that a teacher at Hilton Head Island International Baccalaureate Elementary School found a small razor blade on the boy in class Tuesday. A police report says it was obvious the blade came from a pencil sharpener.

The report says the boy is a well-behaved, good student and cried when he was suspended for at least two days. He could face further punishment.

School district spokesman Randy Wall says the district has a zero-tolerance policy on weapons, but wanted to be reasonable. He says they needed to make sure the student understood the seriousness of having the blade.

That's why I will be glad when D-man graduates.

Public schools are cesspools. Teaching to the lowest common denominator and having administrators with ZERO common sense.

Actually, it's an IB school, which I think makes the situation even more ridiculous, considering critical thinking is one of the things emphasized.

Then it is even MORE inexcusable.

It is so apparent that too many educators are exercising undiscriminating, unthinking, authority. Authority without reason. Zero tolerance is simply a passing of the buck for making stupid shit decisions.

I am so glad that I rarely have to deal with hidebound, ignorant assholes taken with their own position and power.

Exactly. It is even more absurd that this is an IB school. The idea of zero tolerance is inane. There are always mitigating factors and shades of grey. Whether they matter or not must be considerd before guilt is determined and/or punishment is meted out. Ridiculous.

Zero tolerance plays well to the masses, but in practice it allows for shite like this to occur. My daughter can't have any aspirin or ibuprofin on her posession at school because of zero tolerance, even though she may need one or the other for her aching knees. It's like the three strikes rules, sounds good, but it really binds the hands of the judges and courts when it comes up and they put a person away for life. Thhey have to have room for practical judgement.

They teach writing in SC now?

Only the ten commandments
