Chattanooga, TN what to do?

Recommended Posts

the aquarium is awesome! :) i work there!

rock city is a tourist trap...avoid it

i don't know, if the weather is nice the walking bridge is fun, and the north shore area is great... there's a restaurant called Good Dog over on the north shore, and you should eat there. it is my new favorite restaurant.

there is a pretty good art museum too.

oh, if you wanna get off the main strip of downtown there is a record store called Chad's. i can spend all day in there... it's on Vine St and Lindsay St.

Also, I am off work, so I could show you around the aquarium if you wanted (you'd have to buy a ticket though)

Thanks for the offer...I am going to play it by ear. I am visiting the in-laws in GA and will be heading up to Chattanooga next Sunday with the wife and mother in law. Not sure if there was anything they wanted to do up there but figured I would ask around...Not even sure if they will be down for the aquarium because we went to the Atlanta one last time........have you visited the Atlanta aqaurium? Quite impressive! :whoo

If you like history Chickamaugua battle field is less than a half an hour away. Very peaceful/serene place.

Sweet..I like seeing American History....will keep this site in mind!

i may be biased but i wasn't that impressed with the GA aquarium

So the Chattanooga one is better? I might have to convince them to stop by then :lol

I really enjoyed the big wall aquarium room in Atlanta...it was kind of freaky!

You also don't recommend Rock City any particular reason? Looks neat though....I love chessey tourist traps.. :P

mostly cos the weather is not supposed to be good this weekend. the only time i like rock city is around Christmas when they have the lights up.

i think our aquarium is better laid out than atlanta. check us out at tnaqua.org

I like the Chattanooga Aquarium. I fell in love with my wife there...totally dropped the ball on the perfect opportunity for a first kiss, though.

They don't have any salt water animals at that aquarium, do they?

As for the layout, if I remember correctly, in Chatanooga you begin on one end and all traffic flows in the same direction towards the final exhibit, making it difficult to backtrack. The GA Aquarium has a center atrium surrounded by exhibits allowing you to choose where you want to go next, and it's easier to revisit an area if you want to take a second look. I prefer that flexibility, but I might be remembering the TN aquarium layout inaccurately.

i haven't been to the GA aquarium, but think the TN one is top notch. they do have a salt water area in the new building which is rather cool because you stand underneath the tank at some point in the building and look up to see sharks swimming overhead. the leafy seadragons are the best (i can't remember what part of the aquarium they are in though.)

we have 2 buildings now. a primarily fresh water buiding that was built in 1992 (i say primarily fresh water, because the first thing you see is a seahorse exhibit that is salt water). the rest of the building is fresh water. we are the largest fresh water facility in north america (at one point, we were the biggest in the world). the design of the aquarium is supposed to mimick a river's flow to the ocean.

we opened ocean journey in 2005, and it features a 618,000 gallon salt water tank that is modeled after the flower garden banks national marine sanctuary off the coast of tx. we also have a penguin exhibit that opened in 2007 and a butterfly exhibit that houses more than 30,000 butterflies. in addition to the stingray touchtank and a "boneless beauties" exhibit (jellyfish and all that jazz)
